Hooking up a Three Point Implement

Ойын-сауық

One of the toughest thing for a new tractor owner is hooking and unhooking implements, well, actually the unhooking isn't that big a deal, it's getting them on the back of the tractor that's a pain in the rear end, especially if you're new at it. If you're a seasoned professional, been in the equipment business for 25 years, it ought to be easy. That might be for others, this boy still struggles from time-to-time as you'll see in the video.
This is one of the first in the Tractor Mike KZread video series and by far my most-popular video, and you'll see me try to hook up a three point tiller, without the use of extendable lower link arms or a quick hitch. Both of these items would make the process a whole lot easier, here's a link to a video I did about three point options: • Three Point Options , that explains some features on deluxe tractors that make the process easier, and here's a link to a quick hitch: amzn.to/2u1P5wV. That's a device that you can install on almost any tractor that allows you to go from implement to implement really easily, the only reason I don't own one is because it won't work on a post hole digger (in fact it's in the way of putting one on) which I use often. Otherwise, a quick hitch is a great tool to consider, the one the link goes to has extremely high ratings and my neighbor has one just like it and loves it.
Anyway, the good news is, hooking up implements becomes easy the more you do it. Sometimes they even go right on. Sometimes it would require a 5 minute 33 second video to show all the tribulation that goes into it. Hang in there!

    I just have a sub-compact tractor so implements are light weight enough you can kind of shove them around a bit to hook them up, but full size implements for farm tractors on the other hand, just keep small children away and cover their ears otherwise they'll learn a whole new language LOL.

    15+ years of connecting implements to my Kubota and just today I thought “am I the only one that absolutely hates this entire hook up process?” So I figured I’d look up a video to make sure I wasn’t missing an easy trick or doing it wrong. Turns out (based on the first link you hooked up), I’m doing it right, it just sucks! Ha! Great video as always. Thank you.

I fretted over this attachment challenge for so long and so intense, I gave thought to selling the farm. Maybe I was not Mechanical enough. Maybe too old (62). I'm starting today with new hope thanks to Mike and KZread.

    Thanks for showing the frustration and elation we all genuinely feel. Well done. I wish there was a video on how to align or set down the implement to disconnect it (maybe on a 4x4) after you're finished using it, or want to connect another, so that next time it needs to be attached it won't be too low or can be tilted to get the pins aligned and inserted. Again, thanks, well done.

    What I try and do is get the two arms as close as possible and then use a pry bar (or 2x4) to pry the equipment and move it to line with the arms, a pry bar makes it much easier than by trying to move the heavy implements by hand.

    Wow. Thank you, thank you. Have to attach an implement to my tractor next week for the first time, and in the road outside because the lorry delivering the implement is too big to get down the lane to my house. So I'm going to have to do this with cars whistling by and in full public view, which is daunting given that I'm new to tractors and have never done this before. Thanks to this video, I'm now totally confident I can do it. Had no idea what the adjustable thing on the right bottom arm was for - now I know. Had no idea about the stabilising things - now I know. Thanks so much.

  • @BeverlyHoward
    @BeverlyHoward8 жыл бұрын

    First, thanks for getting me started understanding 3 point hookups... both for details as well as confirming that others have the same problems that I had learning how to "get started" ...and that kicking doesn't always work ;-) Having finally gotten comfortable using and hooking up three different large cat 1 implements, I have a couple of observations that may differ with the information in this video. The top link is not just along for the ride both when hooking up and when the devices are in use... it's part of the load bearing design. In addition to being necessary to raise and hold the implements, it can also be used to move devices that are too heavy to move with manual force during the hookup process. For example, after backing up and getting the closest lift link connected, the top link can then be adjusted and connected and then use the top link's length turnbuckle adjustment to pull even heavy devices forward (or the tractor backward) until the second lift link can be connected. The top link turnbuckle can even be used to raise the device's lift link pins if they are still too low when the lift arms are at the bottom of their travel. My finding is that when all three points are connected and the lift arm swing toggles are set, it is best to adjust the top link so that the top link is under about a turn of tension tension when the lift arms and fully down and the device is on the same level ground as the tractor. I have three cat 1 pto shafts and none of them contain ball bearings... they all have the same rounded triangular slip shafts that allow the shaft length to automatically adjust. The coupling on each end of the shaft has a spring loaded pin, that, when depressed, lines up a grove in the pin that allows the coupling to be slid completely onto the shaft. When this pin is released, it retracts so that the solid body of the pin fits into the grove on the PTO shaft. You can see how this works by looking into the coupling end and depressing the pin. The video shows using the shaft chain only being used to support the shaft when it is disconnected. These chains need to be reattached (loosely) to the top link or other fixed point on the device to prevent the protective pto outer cover from also turning when the pto shaft itself is turning to provide power. They should not be so loose that they wrap around the shaft cover when the pto shaft is turning. I say "chains" since the covers on each end of the shaft slip independently and each end and both ends need to be attached to a fixed anchor point to stop both covers from spinning with the pto shaft. Keeping the outer cover from turning greatly reduces the chance of the shaft cover grabbing something loose (like clothing or hair) and using it to destroy whatever what's caught happens to be attached to. Referencing the top 3 point link again, if possible it works well to attach the pto cover chain(s) to the top link turnbuckle so that the chain does double duty and keeps that turnbuckle from changing adjustment as well as stopping the pto shaft cover from turning. Thanks again for all of your videos, and I hope that this additional information is helpful to others. Beverly Howard

    Hey Mike, use your front end loader tilted down on the ground with the tractor running to roll the tractor back and forth and the lift arms up and down. Most joysticks can be moved while standing on the right side. Line up the L lift arm first, then use the bucket/loader to line up the right. Been doing it for years on level ground of course.

  • @TheKaylakakes
    @TheKaylakakes6 жыл бұрын

    It really doesn't matter which side you connect first. If you hook up the right side, turning the link height adjustment up will lower the left side and vice versa. Now, you can line up the other side (right or left) using the centre link. If you need to move the implement back, connect the centre link, extend it until it's tight, then gently lift the lower links and the implement will move back on the loose side. Lower it back down and clip it. If you need to move it forward, shorten the centre link until it's tight, and lift. The implement will inch forward on the loose side. Lower, and clip it. Easy, no sweat, and more safe.

    If you can, when disconnecting an implement, park it on a couple of 4"x4"s or some support that might allow some minor movement of the implement to help line up with the lower lift arms. A pry bar might come in handy to that effect. In my experience I have also found that profanity is an integral part of the hook-up process. I also suggest wearing gloves.

I set the arms to be all the way down to set the height for the cutter. It takes operating pressure off the hydraulic system and I don't need to be able to plow with the thing. It gets removed onto cinder blocks and I have a mark on the lever to get close before I get off the tractor. lol

    This is one reason why a tractor with a hydro-static transmission is worth its weight in gold. On my Kubota tractor (with HST) I can easily move the tractor 1/8" at a time to make the micro adjustments needed to allow the holes to line up. In fact, I can move the tractor while standing on the ground by pressing the pedal a tiny bit. Probably wouldn't pass an OSHA inspection, but it saves me from having to get up onto the tractor, make tiny adjustment, get back off....repeat.

    I hate the three point hitch. I really wish they would have a standard design that is easier than a 3-point. It's really hit or miss and I've been doing this for decades. Sometimes it goes on and off in a couple minutes, and sometimes you're turning the tractor on and off the adjust the level of the arms, maneuvering the tractor to realign it with the implement, kicking the implement to get it more in place, pounding on it with a mallet, trying to move huge heavy equipment and destroying your back in the process. What a pain! These things are dinosaurs and need to go away. Your effort here exactly illustrates what a pain it is to deal with these things.

    +roy hoco My video would involve my wife helping me, she's involved every time we hook up the post hole digger. I may actually do that video, if you can get the mainframe attached, the rest is fairly easy. It's getting the tractor at the exact place where that mainframe goes on that's the challenge. I have my wife drive and I tell her when to stop and we get it on that way. With two people it's not too bad, it's pretty tough by yourself.

    +Mike Wiles (Ask Tractor Mike) I have learned to strap (using a ratchet strap around the gear box) the post hole digger to a tree and put wood blocks under the u shaped bar (bell ?) near where the two pins are located, this keeps the digger upright and the pins stable while I am attaching it to the tractor, this helps a lot. I also put pallets under all my implements and try to keep the pallets on level ground, this aids in getting a long bar under a implement if you have to bump the implement a inch or two. I also have the quick attach on both my tractors and they take some of the work out of hitching up something

    THANKS FOR NOTICING! There's a safety shield around the PTO that stays stationary while everything inside it spins. There's a chain attached to the shield that needs to be attached to a fixed part of the tractor so it doesn't spin. The video was running a little long and I left that out. Thanks for bringing that point up.

    I can't believe no one has thought of this... why not build pallets with locking caster rollers for each of your implements? Set them on the pallets and use some pressure treated wood supports to keep it stable when detaching at the right level. Then next time you need it, just unlock the casters, roll the whole thing lined up and into position, hook up and go? Naturally, you'd need to clear out a nice flat surface to store all your implements - maybe pour a slab of concrete so the casters can roll easy, but attachments no longer sitting in the weeds is a good thing right?

    For about $300 bucks you can get a universal quick hitch assembly which stays attached to the 3 point on the tractor, and you have three hooks which hook (and lock) into the pins in the implement. The only thing you need to do is put a permanent pin through the top link attachment point on the implement. Attaching and detaching any 3 point implement is about 75% faster with this set up. WAY less hassle!!! Yes, there are some implements (like an auger) which it won't work on, but it works on 90% of them. Ours stays on the tractor about 95% of the time.

  • @TractorMike

    @TractorMike

    That's true, they're awesome, just make sure that all implements fit the quick hitch. The distance between the pins is not the same on all implements and I've run into instances where they had to be modified to work. A quick hitch is a great way to save time if a person changes attachments often. Can you share what brand of quick hitch you have?

  • @TractorMike

    @TractorMike

    7 жыл бұрын

    Well, technically you should. New tractors generally come with those but they almost immediately get lost/run over and never seen again. Or thrown away by the owner who realizes they're a little hard to get on and off because they have to be lined up perfectly to screw in. Mine disappeared years before I got my tractor. As long as you're never back there when the PTO is running or don't have Rapunzel-length hair, or anything that could reach that area of the tractor, the danger is negligible. If you want to get one of those, ask your local dealer to order one, or they may have one laying around they'll give you because the shop guys removed it to prep the tractor and it's been sitting on a shelf under their work bench for twelve years :).

    Of course you went back and fastened that chain to the pto shroud so the outer shield would not turn, and then you leveled the tiller with the right hand lift arm jackscrew right? And then you checked on the price of a set of Pat's easy hitch or Carter hitches or a Speco or other brand hitch so you could quit kicking and bending and struggling with those damn non telescoping link ends and those stupid turnbuckles..Right.? Not on taking it off, here's one on putting it on, it will at least let you know what's going on inside the PTO coupling: kzread.info/dash/bejne/q6xhkrmoidvLips.html. You can drive away from it, it'll separate, then it'll be much easier to disconnect it than it would be hooked to an implement. Make sure you're moving the release in the right direction (which I think I say at the end of the video). Some collars look like you should move forward to attach or release, but you actually pull them back toward you. I may try to do a video on not being able to get a PTO off in the future, I thought I had done one but I'm not seeing it, after 275 videos my memory is starting to get a little fuzzy on what I've covered and what I haven't.

    +Machi74005 No, I've thought about it. 90% of the time I put my brush hog on in the spring and take it off in the fall and that' s about all I use the three point for. I'm getting ready to do a video this fall with a buddy that swears by them. We'll see if it changes my mind. You still have to get off the seat to attach the PTO. If I were going from box blade to rock rake often it would be a different story. I've had a lot of people tell me I'm missing out by not having one, I'm not yet convinced.

    Great video, thanks for the upload. Being a complete noob and just about to purchase my first tractor I have a question. If you adjust the link arm to get it level for hooking up to the implement, what happens when all is attached and you lift the implement, will everything still be level? I was thinking that you end up with the link arms being different lengths so the implemt would not be straight :/ I said I was a noob :)

  • @TractorMike

    @TractorMike

    9 жыл бұрын

    THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION! If it was parked on a level concrete slab it wouldn't matter, if not, you probably need to level it up after the implement is hooked up. That's because, if the implement was parked on the ground and has settled on one side then you have to adjust the link arms to hook it up. When you pick it up it won't be level because the link arms will be at different lengths. So, at that point, raise it up and adjust the arms to get it level. Of course, you'll want to be parked on level ground when you do that, it probably won't be exact, but you'll want it close. Unless, of course, you're using some kind of blade and you want it to be lower on one side so you could cut out a ditch and there's no reason you can't do that. I probably should have covered that in the video, I do cover it on another one I did about getting a brush hog ready for the field. Those need to be leveled both from side to side and from front to back. Thanks for the question!

    I am honestly shocked that this is how people are teaching this and kind of surprised how widespread this method is taught. It is far easier to attach the top link first and then bring the implement into alignment using the top-link as a lever.. You do not need to muscle it, kick the arms, or get back on the tractor to put implements on, just use it as it was intended!
