Easier Three Point Hitch Hookup

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video covers some real basics of tractor operation, but if you didn't grow up on a farm you may struggle trying to hook up implements. I'm going to show you two things in this video, one, how to use the extendable lower link arms that are options on many tractors. They extend out, you hook them up, then you back up to lock them in place. Second, I'm going to show you a little trick that you can do with the link arms…you can raise them manually with the tractor shut off so if they're lower than the pins on the implement, you can keep them narrow, then pick them up and get them hooked on without starting the tractor. Most of you probably know all of this already, but, again, if you didn't grow up around equipment this might help you.
I know I'm going to get questions about "quick hitches". These are devices that enable rapid hooking and unhooking of implements that work great, provided the dimensions of the hook up are the same on all implements. I haven't decided to invest in one of these yet, but I have a buddy that swears by them and I'll be at his place in a couple of months and hope to do a video. If you're thinking about getting one of these, again, they work best if the three point hookups on the implements are all the same (usually that means the same brand), otherwise there may have to be some modification done to make them work.
I'm probably also going to get some questions about installing the extendable link ends on tractors that don't have them. You would think that would be an aftermarket option, but I've never seen it. On most tractors you have to order the option when you get the tractor, (see this video: • Three Point Options ) or, If you don't get it then, you have to piece a set together by ordering the parts individually and it becomes prohibitively expensive to do that. I keep thinking some after market tractor supplier will offer a "kit" with two lower arms with extendable links but I haven't seen that so far. If anyone knows about a kit like that, please let me know.
Finally, I didn't say it in the video but I always hook the left side (if you're on the tractor seat) of the two lower link arms up first because the right side has a crank that raises and lowers it. On some tractors they both have cranks or turnbuckles, on this one only the right side is adjustable, so I hook it up last.

    Great tip and insight. Pretty sure everybody struggles with hooking up implements at some time or another. Unfortunately my tractor arms aren't the extendable type shown here, so getting the right alignment can be pretty hard. One trick I've used, though...and this is potentially dangerous so be careful...is to use the front bucket to make very small backwards adjustments. Idle your tractor and put it in neutral. Lift the bucket off the ground and rotate it forward until the bottom edge is pointing straight down. GENTLY lower the bucket all the way down onto the front edge. Don't lift the front end up...just drop the bucket down enough for the lip to get a 'bite' on the ground. Disengage the brakes and rotate, not lift but rotate, the bucket upward (scoop action) very slowly. This will slowly move the tractor backwards. When the arms are where you want them, engage the parking brake. Shut off the tractor and complete the hook up. Appreciate al the great advice from Mike and others on here. Keep up the great work and be safe.

    I love your videos Mike. I'd like to see one on adjusting the 3 point hitch and how to make sure that the 3 point hitch isn't too free allowing the attachment to sway too much and hit the tires, and not too tight either. I would find this really helpful, and I think others would as well.

    tmwilloughby Great idea! I remember selling a tractor to a guy who didn't know you had to do that and with 5 hours on it he had totally chewed up the inside of his tires with the implement. We got it covered under warranty, which was a miracle, but I vowed to never let it happen again. That will be a fairly easy video for me to do, but I'll need to show the different types of stabilizers, both telescoping and turn buckle. I'll try to get that done in the next couple of weeks. THANKS FOR THE SUGGESTION!!!

    I always had a problem with my tractor getting the implements hooked up on it. My tractor don't have the adjustable bottom links and I wish it did. I guess that John Deere decided that the smaller tractors didn't need it back in 2002. I purchased the 3 point quick hitch from the dealer and it helped with some equipment, but the box blade was difficult to hook up and I ended up taking the bolts out of it and readjusting the top hookup so it would fit. I have a new plow and I have to do the same thing with it. The tiller and middle buster isn't a problem since I can lift it up.

    I’m disabled (and stubborn). I keep my box blade on 6x6 blocks. It keeps it dry and out of the mud. But it also let’s me use a piece of pipe as a pry bar and move it into position. If it’s stuck in the mud it won’t slide.

    Our Deere and the other two tractors don't have a chain and pin setup for the stabilizers. They use a locking nut/bolt system to either tighten or slacken the arms. So once we get them pinned on the implement, to reduce sway we tighten the nuts on either arm. They have enough play to attach, and lifting them should be common knowledge.

    Depends on the implement. You want rotary cutters with a slight tilt toward the tractor, I think most tillers are supposed to be level. If you can get an owner's manual for each implement, they're pretty good about telling you how to set them and why.

    Its his way of aiming when backing up. You can do it with them spread wide to not hit the pins or the implement frame. (even without the extendable arms) Extendable arms give you more room for error in lining the tractor up.

    Most new tractors come with something like that, then it gets lost or destroyed shortly thereafter. I don't think I've ever seen an aftermarket one, which is really strange, you'd think there'd be a market for them. A lot of smaller tractors come with a rubber shield that slides on and keeps the grooves clean, I have an older tractor that has a metal cover that threads on, but after the threads get covered with debris, is nearly impossible to get started. What brand and model do you have?

    Quick question do you know any easier way to hook up a disc mower if it's not level, because I have so much trouble hooking it up by myself? I wasn't sure if they have any new attachment or what.. The problem is with a disc mower they are so heavy that even if the Jack is sitting on the ground after a year it still want to settle to one side and it doesn't make the hook up easier. I always get one arm hooked up the I have to raise it and pull up and back until I can get it level enough to hook up the other side. Please do a video or of anyone has any ideas let me know.. Thanks

    The only thing that I know that might fix the problem is that you might consider a hydraulic top link. You'd have to have a set of hydraulic remotes to make it work. There have been some tractors built over the years with down pressure built in to the three point, but I've never known any way to add that.

  • @bluegrallis

    @bluegrallis

    If you box blade lifts, instead of digging in, shorten the top link, so it cuts and pulls down, instead of trying to lift up. With an internal lift cylinder, there is no way to add down pressure on the lift arms.

    There was a guy building and selling them online a few years ago, but my neighbor tried to order some and he was a year behind in production, and that was before Covid hit. His website is no longer active. I know of no other source for aftermarket stabilizers. I guess there's so much difference in length and attaching points that no one has been able to design one size that fits all brands and models. If you find some let me know, but I'm skeptical they exist. Good luck!

    i have a question about the top link. I noticed you useing a adjustable solid top bar when hooking up brush hog. In my area thats a big no no we have to use a length of chain in order for the back of the hog to have upward give. Otherwise in alot of areas it will set down and lift the rear of the tractor and bind up.

  • @TractorMike

    @TractorMike

    7 жыл бұрын

    Just be careful the PTO shaft doesn't bind. My brush hog has a mechanism that allows a tremendous amount of play back there, so if going through much of a dip there's more to worry about in bending the PTO shaft than the top link. Here's a video explaining: kzread.info/dash/bejne/noamqaSuZ7C0pqw.html.

  • @TractorMike

    @TractorMike

    +mikeyd4332 Mikey, bad news. Most manufacturers equip their deluxe tractors with them and their basic tractors without. Then, to entice you to spend more on the new tractor, they don't make a kit so you can install them afterwards, you have to go buy the individual link arms from parts and it's really expensive. I've not seen a kit from aftermarket suppliers that fit all brands, because link arms aren't uniform, so a "one size fits all" probably wouldn't work. There are a few tractor salvage yards around the country that might be able to supply a used set if you're real lucky, otherwise, you'll need to see the parts guys at the dealership that handles the brand you own. If you find a "deal" on a set, let me know and I'll pass the info on, probably would do a video on it. We had the same problem on the farm with the last tractor we bought. We thought we'd be able to find some extendable link arms that would work and even the parts guys couldn't supply a set, the particular model we owned had a really unique set of arms that didn't interchange with anything, so I feel your pain.

    I bought my JD 4120 in 2007 and knew nothing about extendable links. When I saw them in use on a different tractor brand about 7 years later, I started looking around and found that my JD dealer could get them for my tractor for about $369 for the pair. That's not chicken feed, but I've found that it has taken gobs of time off of hooking up my brush hog, back blade, and hay disc mower. Wish I'd have known about them sooner, but they've been worth it to me.
