    In a way, yes, yes this channel is a treasure. None of this is staged or exaggerated. There are no protestors or 'actors' on camera trying to turn real life into propaganda. It simply is what is. And maybe a century from now, people will watch a video like this and see life for how it was at this time and place.

    Selma, the heart of the marches for civil rights. If you visit there today , it would look just as it was back in the 60s, nothing has changed since those marches. Youd think selma would be ground zero for civil peace. But it isn't. Its a depressing city. Black people still talk like they are in Jim Crow. They worship light skin blacks. They hate dark skin blacks. Its such a sad sad town.

    when small towns get stuck in this cycle its almost impossible to get out, unless you can move to a bigger city. places like this need big money manufacturing or businesses to come in and give/promote jobs. no offense to those that do participate, but churches prey on towns like this and vacuum up all those poor folk money and dont do anything with it for the community..

    Selma was a nice place to live when I was there between 1979 & 1985. Downtown had been revitalized, crime wasn't too bad & the economy seemed stable. The closing of the Air Force base (Craig Field) slowly killed the economy. Several industries were looking at Selma but the Chamber of Commerce wouldn't allow any unionized labor so they located elsewhere. Unemployment got high, crime rose due to the influx of drugs & it got bad. I left for better employment opportunities. I went back a couple of years ago & I was appalled! Downtown was basically boarded up, the economy was horrible, streets & neighborhoods were in bad disrepair. What a shame to see what once was a nice city to live in turn to this.

    @@Keys7 You're almost right, Keys. My grandfather is from a little town called "Rickey". Just outside of Birmingham. The town doesn't exist anymore. Anyhoo, GrandDad used to tell me about the "Scottsboro Boys". GrandDad told me that's the reason why he left Alabama. GrandDad's younger sister, Edie, lived in Detroit. So, GrandDad married GrandMa in Kentucky and carried her to Detroit. He said she was the prettiest woman he had ever seen. All this went down in 1943. The flip side is this: I used to work at Kingsway over here on Grand River and Oakman. All I did was count the cash. So, they hired this young woman from Selma. Her aunt was a big-time caterer in Detroit. Her neice needed a job. Kingsway hired her. And, part of my job was to train her on the store's operations. We were young. So, we fell in love. She is the mother of my child. 33 years later. And, I still love her.

    As a native, born and raised in Selma/Dallas County, let me get a few things straight. No one, and I mean No ONE worships light skinned black people here. I am a light skinned black person and I am treated just like everyone else. Secondly, this city cannot progress because of its leadership. The people in this city do more for it than some of the elected officials. There are some elected officials who have this city's best interest at heart, but they are often stifled at higher levels of authority by white leaders who are higher on the totem pole than them. Thirdly, and sadly, Selma, does not receive any of the funding that it needs for education, infrastructure and recreation for kids. If it does receive funding, it is quickly stolen by those corrupt elected officials and the city never sees a dime of it. So when watching this, it would seem that everything you all are saying is true. But why not ask someone who truly knows and lives this. No one hates dark skinned black people. I would literally have to hate half of my family. That is probably the most disturbing comment I read. However, black people in Selma, are just like black people everywhere else. The good, the bad and the ugly. Now I will comment on my city and tell you the real issues, but make your own assumptions. Because at the end of the day, this video is not indicative of the people and culture of Selma.

    @@turkeyman410 Selma has white leaders yes. The Ward One City Councilman is white and so are several County Commissioners. Also, I said, "There are some elected officials who have this city's best interest at heart, but they are often stifled at higher levels of authority by white leaders who are higher on the totem pole than them." End quote. I did not say how much higher but since you asked, I'll run it down for you. The Republican U.S Senator is Richard Shelby who has been in that office since 1987. The Democratic Senator is Doug Jones. Doug's work has often been stifled because of the support he receives from the African American community. If you would like I can continue up the totem pole but i'm sure that you know how to Google. And since we are asking for clarification, what exactly is your interest in Selma and the operation thereof?

  • @turkeyman410

    @turkeyman410

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@tobyjohnson26 OK. I guess I shouldn't have typed "any". My confusion is that it would appear from the comment that Selma's troubles lay at the feet of 2 white councilman, 2 white commissioners, and 1 U.S. Senator. They must be some mighty powerful people. I also can't help but notice that "color" seems to play an important role in one's ability to stifle. In Doug's case, no outside influence is needed. He stifles himself. I would point out that Teri Sewell is US Rep for this district and the $ flows through that branch if lack of money were the issue. As for my interest? Just the truth. I think this video speaks for itself.

    I am embarrassed by the way my city looks. I grew up in one of the neighborhoods in this video and I can promise you, it did not look this way when I was younger...(Keep in mind I am only 40 now)...I am not going to place blame on any one person or group of people, but I must say the YOUTH of Selma don't have the love or passion to see their own communities flourish. We never threw our trash on the ground because we would have serious consequences. We kept our grass cut because that was our way of earning money to buy the things we wanted instead of just waiting for someone to give it to us. We cant expect anyone to come in and help us revitalize or even rebuild out own communities until we can start taking pride in our own communities FIRST.

    There’s plenty of stories about rural Russians and the high death rates by murders accidents and suicides. Extreme cases of depression and metal health issues that are covered up with alcohol and petty crimes. They talk about being so poor and disconnected because of class and distance that there’s no hope to progress or ever “get out”. A lot of black communities like this one in America are very similar to that smh

    I hear ya. To me it looks like a lot of American towns. I love how biggoted people act like these neighborhoods only exist in black or Hispanic populated areas when I see these same rundown towns throughout the whole country when I leave the city. A lot of rural towns look like that town from the Children of The Corn where everything is closed down and no one is in sight. Hell. Most of rural America from what I see are slums. My job has me travel a lot, so I see plenty cities in the US that all have the same issues; I see more shabby neighborhoods than well kept neighborhoods, unfortunately.

    The tornado of 2023 makes most of this video part of the before and after.. Raised in Selma from 56-75 it was a cool place and time to live there. No serious crimes were being committed, everybody(kids included) worked somewhere and had a paycheck at the end of the week. We enjoyed the pool parties on the weekend at Carver YMCA on Minter Ave and basketball and baseball games outside at Payne School. Riding motorcycles through town and even outside the city limits.Lutheran Acamedy was the coolest campus as far as High Schools. Every now and then someone would drown swimming at the river or camp grist or Kennel Mills. Today the kids are killing each other because they are too stupid to relize you kill someone you will be in jail for( 95%) possibly the rest of your life...your future ends. If there no jobs in Selma catch a bus,train,plane bike, or hitchhike out west there plenty jobs...,good paying jobs. Just go online to the city of your choice and apply and get outta there!
