With the discovery of how powerful LP Brawlers are we needed to hone the fleet design to perfection before I can finish up. Surprisingly EMP is really really handy for crippling the big ships. If you can knock out their engines they are easy to pick off.

    This quantity over quality aproach feels very alien to me which makes this rather fun to watch. Would love to see you play around with ships from spindle or diable avionics but i understand if you wanna stay with vanilla for a guide...

    Scarabs are still one of the best ship to throw at Remnant and statons. Especialy with AM Blasters and IR pulse lasers, they can completely wreck ships without a single s mod.

    killing remnant without any losses was nearly impossible, you fight again fairly unbalanced ships with high quality enemy captains much worse because unless you're min max your fleet in wolf pack tactic it nearly always guarantee you got lower DP compared to enemy. brawler LP and scarab is the best options for frigate class again remnant they have good balance fire power and durability again remnant. at the destroyer class you have medusa, they're good against remnant frigate and destroyer they will highly reduce the time for your fleet to kill the scatter small remnant fleet so your brawler can focusing all of their attention to the main threat in the cruiser class you have doom, it the best ships for killling fighter and frigate, by using phase mine it will eliminate any low threat enemy with ease and eliminate the potential enemy distraction for your fleet at the battleship class you have conquest, ziggurat, or radiant as the best ai ships only, they can be very deadly with right load out. your conquest kinda unoptimize, you put front shield on them and make it becomes lest maneuverable just put expanded shield on them and it will do their jobs very well also MJ cannon may seem good but in reality it perform very poorly on conquest compared to any large gun , it very in flux heavy can can easily make your conquest go to high flux just by shooting it, try to put gauss cannon and harbor it allowing you to kite the remnants and fairly safe distance.

    One of the larger contributors to AI behavior is the minimum range of all non-point defense weapons equipped on a ship because ships like to shoot all their guns at their target. Long ships (like the Odyssey) can make really odd decisions to get their rear guns into range (i.e. 27:15 the Odyssey charges to get it's Tachyon Lance in range of the Radiant).

    They tried. I just use More(tm) Carriers. It's pretty hard to stop a cloud of torpedoes and guns it turns out.

    Love this behind the scenes testing videos. Just realise I don’t have the time I want to spend on this game, so this is really useful. Just picked this game up and it’s a fairly steep learning curve with the large amounts of ships and weapons out there

    I know I know it's amazing it's just we have a fleet cap of 30 so 5 support ships. That leaves 25 for fighting ships. So my choices were either 12 destroyers with 13 brawlers or 3 capital ships with 22 brawlers. If we put in say 8 monitors we only can bring 17 brawlers so we are not really maximizing our damage.

    @@FrancisJohnYT Ahh, I see the problem. You shouldn't need eight monitors, but in practice you do for a "press full assault and watch" fleet as without some cat herding you can't ensure they're properly distributed across the battlefield. Tactical lasers with Integrated Point Defense AI as you were using are definitely a good answer to that (due to the DPS and range) and on a capital platform let you bring more big guns as well. I was experimenting with remnant farming just before you made that video and encountered the same issues you did with candidates for destroyers - most of them just don't have enough tank to make up for the loss of numbers. SO Hammerhead builds have finally met their match. On the flip side carriers with Broadswords work great; tons of kinetic suppression, but they'll either chase remnant fighters or drum on remnant ships, usually not both at once. Jury's still out on the massed carrier approach for me. On the other hand your LP Brawler swarm is great, and more importantly a lot of fun to use.

    AFAIK in vanilla gameplay the only thing that really works well in the large slot without overfluxing a manticore is the hellfire. It shows low dps but since it does high dmg per shot and has low flux it's rather busted for dealing damage to capital ships and cruisers. The best anti fighter weapon in the game is probably the dual flak cannon followed by the single flak cannon (both medium weapons). Beam weapons work pretty well too, a disco ball paragon with full tac laserz and takyon is a force to be reckoned with for general use and melts fighters too. Edit 1: If you wanna continue with conquest missile boat there's a fairly strong large missile called "swarm" if I remember right and it melts all enemies. It's meant for anti fighter but works really well vs everything bigger too. Edit 2: Sunderer is only really good with beam weapons in the large slot or it overfluxes itself in my experience. Need long range plus low flux per second to make them effective. Best options IMO is HIL or Takyon in big slot. Gravitron or Ion for mediums. Even still kinda mediocre in AI hands, only truly decent if you control it directly. Edit 3: Odyssey is probably my favorite ship to pilot in this game. It's super useful and one of the straight out most powerful ships. It's only downside is weird placement of weapons but once you get used to it that's not even an issue. If I recall correctly, it has some out of combat passives that are good too. Edit: I remember that any ships with the skip are kinda meh in AI hands now that I think about it. They love to jump forward into hordes and die horribly. So Ody is probably only really good if you are gonna pilot it yourself. edit 4: Full assault is meant for when you already won the battle basically to mop stuff up. Ships are much less concerned for their well being if it's on, the same way they are if you give an Eliminate order. If you give engage order the ship takes its survival into account. Paragon is not much rarer than Conquest, Odyssey is probably the rarest ship in the game. Either way not many players in mid game will have any capital ships besides a Legion they found randomly. IMO Paragon is the best capitol ship in AI hands since it is too slow to get itself killed if you have stuff escorting it and don't split up your fleet too much. It also has the highest range in game generally with its passive and takyons or HIL (high intensity laser). If you just want a really good ship for dealing with shitling fighters, the Onslaught is super zippy with its special ability and it has tons of gun slots to put all sorts of point defense in. It's little brother the dominator is like a worse version in every way, but is still one of the best ships in the game for PD as long as you don't let either get surrounded by cruisders/destroyers.

    Monitors make great screening ships, they have two flak cannons built in for free anyways and can tank near infinite damage with the overrides.

    The ultimate anti-remnant ship is the ziggurat, with 2 tac lances or the 2 redacted black hole beams and 4 heavy needlers. Phase anchor, heavy armor, reinforced subsystems, the 2 phase skills and CR time skill also a must have, player piloted. Your fleet just needs to stop too many of the remnant from swarming you all at once and not die right away, but you can take on 3 remnant fleets in the same battle this way, over 300% experience bonus per battle. The devs will nerf it though because they hate high-tech players.

    Devastator cannon can be good when used as really big PD for the conquest and onslaught which have reduced OP cost on large ballistics. They have just enough power to be a threat to frigates so they can help stop those capitals from being flanked. Which is very useful on the onslaught but admittedly you probably want more ship killing power and an escort instead. But hey you can never have enough PD, as missiles and bombers tend to be the thing that destroys your own ships most.

    i always have a ship with an operations center to make sure I never run out of command points. I keep it out of the fight till the end. With no command point problem, I place an “avoid” on big capital ships to keep my ships off them and focus on killing all the escorts. Once the escorts are gone I focus attacks on one capital ship at a time.

    I used the brawler tt high tech with ion burst, they have 10 more ordonnance point than the others brawler, it's very effective, as soon as they touch a ship it is almost every time disabled.

    Mostly piloted by myself, my Odyssey design was pretty good for anti-fighter duty and trade blows against a brilliant and win, needs help vs radiants. 2 heavy blaster on left side (no heavy energy weapons), 2 ion cannon next to HB's, the large anti-fighter missiles in right large hybrid slot, burst PD on right side, 3 medium sabot srm's, remnant pd fighters for additional pd, you should see the fighter swarms that remnants send at me when piloting this thing, wow. Build in reinforced hull, hardened shields and ITU. Use front shield conversion and solar shield. You might want to switch something around for additional maneuvering/turn speed. It's great for drawing fighter in early and smashing them, then go forward, catch lone remnant ships out and smash them, or maneuver around to take out their carriers. A similar build for the apogee works also, apogees seem better for AI control for anti-fighter duty - heavy blaster front, large anti-fighter missile, medium and small burst PD lasers. There's really no build where you don't lose ships to remnants especially when their fleets size up to having four radiants each - that's why I put reinforced bulkheads on all my ships so I can always recover them -if- when I win.

    One possible solution may be phase frigates with PD, those are a huge pain for forward firing capital ships as they will target the frigates even in phase when they are impossible to hit.

    Yeah, Sunders really are not well-suited for close combat. They're long range support platforms, basically. Ion pulsers suck, sadly. EMP weapons do rule, though. I'd recommend ion beams, personally. EDIT: Ion cannons on the brawlers isn't that bad an idea, but it does kill your shield breaker potential. Also, AFAIK, cannons lack the shield penetration ionization of most other ion weapons.

    Against fighters you can try the Proximity Charge Launcher which will target fighters and missiles. Another build is to manually pilot a pirate falcon with 4 of them and get up close and personal with your target. It tears through stuff very fast.

    I found that the shade phase ship a vital swap for a gunship, not the omen version. it's a fast scout and can disrupt initial enemy formation, after your line is set, pull him back to wing your main DPS

    I recommend giving a look at Lasher (LP) which has 5 slots to spam dakkas, or you want something even more dakka, Vanguard has 8 slots (but no accelerated ammo feeder variant). Vanguard can be surprisingly tanky due to the fact that they simply don't get overloaded and open for attacks. it's also better not to put fast guns like machine gun or vulcans on accelerated ammo feeder gunships. There is a cap on how fast the guns can shoot, guns like vulcans that are already at max aspd benefit less from accelerated ammo feeder. as for support ships, missiles boats like Gryphon work better with frigate swarm than giant capital ships, as they can shoot over the swarm, rather than being body blocked or body blocking the swarm in their attacks. Locust SRM Launcher is your best tool in threatening fighters and even frigates space.

    a way i found how to avoid the frigates swarming 1 ship is to designate targets its takes some time but it makes ship focus on 1v1 or 2v1 more than swarming, does tend to make the frigates dumb in that they ignore other ships than their targets.

    I put mine ion pulsar with extended magazines on the Harbingers. Phase ships go in phase thru the enemy ship turn un phase just unload into the engines Arcs all over the rest of the systems they just dead in the water. Also takes down shields really well. But once those shields down and they are basiccally stunned you see the rest of the fleet just lock in on that ship and I dunno what ship it is but all I hear is Caaa chunk caaachunk and then something explodes. Probably should go back and figure it out it just sounds amazing.

    I just found that it was a bit to easy to score a lot of money, after that massive fleets were the order of the day. Also I was not sure how to do episodes about me learning how to pilot ships.

    For anti-fighter, I've been finding good success by mounting "Integrated Point Defence AI" on anything with an energy weapon. The text says 'missiles', but it seems to work on fighters as well.

    A lot of weapons can target fighters by default. Tac lasers are pretty decent vs fighters if you have 3 or 4 aimed in the same direction or on swivel mounts and they can always target fighters.

    I did a similar strategy to you, except I used safety override lashers and vanguards Lashers for massive kinetic spam and vanguards for soaking damage and torpedo spam then I had one or two onslaughts followed by atlas for large missiles.

    Lasers are the only weapon that don't do hard flux on shields, so unless you can overwhelm them quickly or overload or bypass their shields some other way, they're useless as main weapons. For point defense against remnant shielded fighters, it has to be burst PD. Even then, swarm/locust are far better than the lasers against fighters/bombers, but missiles can't stop other missiles/torps except by luck.

    Proximity mines are busted if you use them personally. I don't know if you ever pilot in this game yet but if you ever lower shields on something then just shoot tons of prox mines in their face it feels really unfair. They double as obliterating missiles and fighters as well.

    I ran brawler spam for a while and 'harass'/'engage'/'eliminate' tended to distribute ships in a way closer to what I wanted, though issuing the commands on most enemy ships felt rather micro intensive.

    Monitor with anti fighter missile big boy tank .. brawler for sustained high armor damage, hyperions for emp reducing dmg output.. ohmen and tempest also nice, with tempests beeing the weak point.. then 3-5 bigger ships to get a wall of flesh .. so your frigates can work the flank…. I use two carriers one high range and 2 smaller rocket ships.. but do not deploy them when i don’t fight capital ships or a lot of oompf

    Maybe you could go 3/4 machine guns with your brawlers. Like half brawlers get two machine guns and the other half get a ENP and a machine gun. That might be enough to disable the enemies while still keeping most of your fire power.

    It's incredibly tough but it's not a damage dealer. Works great in a ranged fleet if you let it sit up front to tank while your damage dealers pound away.

    that's a weird Odyssey loud out, i would try different loud outs with it. and since you want more PD, i would suggest using Xyphos support fighter wings, wasps are just way to squishy for remnants.

    I went with mass laser pointers for the 1k range, put on the PD Defense add on and they just destroy fighters like crazy. I know I am not using the odyssey as it's intended, I am using it more as a fast ship that can take out fighters and tank hits from a Radiant for a decent amount of time if necessary. I have been tweaking them and they are far more survivable than the conquests I was running while only outputting slightly less damage.

    watching the brawlers mucking about in the back line with like 1 fighter makes me think that maybe a dedicated anti fighter carrier might have been an idea? sure an efficient fleet is one that can do multiple roles at once for each ship but at the same time i think the easier option would have been to just dedicate maybe 2-3 ships purely for anti fighter fighters

    I've been running an astral and a scintilla loaded up with a total of 6 spark wings and all my scarabs are still prone to fighter distractions tbh. Frigate fleets are just incredibly silly about that. The best work around really is using enough elimination commands to properly focus the entire fleet.

    try SO dominator with 2 devastators, it is very fast for what it is and melts literally anything on front of it in seconds, but can be flanked relatively easy, mix with enforcers, should be solid

    Not sure but maybe Tempests would have a better time against fighters? They have a very cool special ability that gives them these two little drones that follow them around, they make decent point defence and can also be turned into missiles to help with punching through armor.

    Tempests are useless since the 0.95a update, the AI throws their drones away for no reason at all as soon as it possibly can.

    Have you tried to use twin blaster Medusa class destroyers as support ships for Brawlers fleet? Normally they could teleport out of troubles if been pushed too hard... Also, there 5 small energy slots for PD or IR (if you only need to shoot fighters, not to missiles) lasers. Yes, these ships are rare, but you does not need 10 of them - 2-3 more than enough. Add Legion class carrier as platform for comand point generation (not to mention 3 bomber + 1 heavy fighter wings) - and complete combat part of the fleet...

    Great series. 10/10. Noticed you were admiring the random ship names. My big bad Paragon is called the "Mercy of Fire". Manually naming ships is fun =) Wolf-Pack tactics are very strong. Its been a thing since the early days of the game. You might also look into the skill of the same name, and put together some custom officers to crew a fleet of smaller ships for this style of fleet comp. Very stronk. 20 story points is nothing, go crazy with S-mods.

    You're problem is that you are trying to make a zumwalt, just stick some PD ships in with the brawlers. SOME

    Just started my 3rd play through and nearly done exploring a 3rd of the sector and have gotten every single rare item in the game except the corrupted nanoforge, which compared to the previous 2 times where i got around a 3rd of the items is insanly good. I find it interesting how very very seed depended the game can be.

    btw you could just grab a commission with whoever is fighting hegemony at the time, and use marine raid to grab one from them, and best thing is you only lose 20 relations with hegemony this way.

    For fighter killing they would be great but they don't really add any damage to the fight. You see we can only have 30 ships in our fleet, 5 support ships (fuel, cargo, salvage) 22 brawlers we put into the fight with leaves us 3 extra ship slots and about 70 deployment points. If we had a bigger fleet cap we could deploy 10 monitors to deal with fighters but considering our points amount 2-3 large ships works better. I wanted to try and find a brawler hybrid, say a destroyer class ship that can do as much damage as a brawler while also destroying fighters and mix them in. Say 10 manticores and 12 brawlers, but I could not find a ship that could do the damage and survive as well.

    Maybe try Buffalo Mk2 Spam. Expanded Missile, Converted Hanger, Xyphos Fighter, Tac Laser, and all double harpoons.

    Can you try cosmoteer? The build a ship game. It used to be easy but it had a huge update with a ton of new weapons.. that was months ago probably more now. It's all about money management to make huge ships, or a ton of small ships. interesting to see your take on it.. and how quickly you break it.. like kenshi..

    Try high tech. Tempest is strong. Medusa could work. Gryphon if you wanna throw a few Anti fighter missiles on it. I usually use heavier ships so I let Omens escort ships. Sadly full assault limits tactics. Or I should say, ignores tactics so you have limited yourself to overwhelming fire power. Which means when that does not work, you don't have a backup plan. Your tactics work, but will always have drawbacks since its built around full assault. Side note, I turn up fleet size but limit myself to 30. It allows you to recover ships when you find something fun.

    Tempest is no good because the ai throws away the droneships for no reason and enough flux damage that can be vented in under a second, with a 30 second? 1 Minute? of drone redeployment time. They have absolutely zero point defense since the 9.95 update while also losing their damage boost, a double nerf. But somehow they think it's ok to make new OP low tech ships with a double damage boost and excellent PD coverage.

    Did you try a mix of Enforcers/Sunders/Manticores to see if that worked better than just all of one type? It seems like their respective niches would complement each other pretty well, especially with all the Brawler support.

    No all the tests were a mix of brawlers and one other ship type. I don't think anything in game can compete with Brawlers combo of speed, damage and survivability. Their only weakness is fighters which with the current fleet balance is pretty easy to get around.

    Just wanted to say a huge thanks for those videos! They are very inspiring. After watching them I want to go and try some of the things you described. (Same with your ONI videos). At the same time please be conscious that extreme efficiency kills fun. If there is a super efficient fleet that can kill everything in this game - what is the point of playing at all? The beauty of this game is an incredible number of ship and fleet designs you can make. Also I wonder if you tried salvaging Remnant ships?

    Salvaging Remnant ships would require I respec a fair bit, I like the current fleet type as it allows me to run a really cheap fleet. I still have bonuses to fuel consumption, cargo and salvaging.

    I am surprised you never tried either beams(Small ones have 100% accuracy against craft/missiles, the burst version is especially good) or missiles(Locust SRM basically clears the entire screen) and/or dedicated "defensive" ships like the Monitor. I think the reason why the AI is being "stupid" is because ships cannot move through one another so pathing quickly becomes insoluble if you field 30 of them. That's one of downsides of the zerg approach I guess.

    Locust is fragmentation damage so it does almost nothing against decent armour, combined with the lack of guidance I just can't use it over Squall or MIRV. Have never played with the paladin champion, well a little experimenting but I found that using Brawlers was so good that nothing else could compare.

    I'm torn about this..Watching your vids makes me very interested in playing this game....Going to their website and seeing this in early access since..2010? 2013?? and the shadiest payment system I've ever seen in my life makes me extremely reluctant. It is a shame because it looks like a really cool game, but damn does it set off all the red flags.

    I bought from the site way back and have had no issues, as far as I'm aware it just a case that the developer is actually indie. They don't have a dev team it's just one fella and I think they don't have web skills. If you don't feel comfortable do your research first, if your still not comfortable don't do it.

    Love your content Francis! Oni and starsector are great. I’m an engineer and have been gaming for 30 years and Starsector is an amazing find!! The balance and combat AI is impressive thank you for introducing this game, I wish the developers would step it up would think it would be worth a fortune on steam. Please support this game!

    @@FrancisJohnYT I think the compromise I'm coming too is get a pre paid card and buy it that way. I feel like supporting them with a purchase is still worthwhile and perhaps some feedback on encouraging them to look at payment alternatives.
