HONG KONG: PEOPLE'S LIBERATION ARMY ARRIVE AFTER HANDOVER

(1 Jul 1997) Natural Sound
On its first morning under Beijing rule, Hong Kong was flooded on Tuesday with People's Liberation Army troops.
China sent its 4,000-strong force of soldiers in at dawn in driving monsoon-like rain.
But the weather didn't deter small bands of well wishers who turned out to welcome the P-L-A to Hong Kong.
The morning after the momentous night before, People's Liberation Army troops streamed over the border into China's new special administrative region.
The impeccably orderly deployment, capping a spectacular handover ceremony Monday, suggested that the Chinese military is aware of the suspicion many Hong Kong people harbour toward it.
And the welcome indicated that at least some of those people don't mind having the People's Liberation Army in their midst.
The deployment was one of the most sensitive issues arising from the handover, because many in Hong Kong remember the army's crushing of the pro-democracy movement in Beijing in 1989.
Chinese President Jiang Zemin had issued a statement Monday ordering the troops to respect Hong Kong's laws, its people and its way of life.
As they arrived, not all of the soldiers were armed and there were fewer armoured personnel carriers amongst the convoy than many feared.
Britain had sharply protested the use of armoured vehicles, saying they would frighten people.
Despite the unrelenting downpour, the troops stood motionless and expressionless in their trucks.
Some barely reacted to crowds of well wishers who lined the streets -- either to welcome them or just witness this unprecedented arrival.
Others waved bunches of flowers. They headed straight for their permanent positions in China's newly reclaimed territory and quickly vanished into their barracks, under orders to stay there except when not on duty.
Then 10 Chinese navy ships sailed in, some carrying troops at attention on their decks.
They sailed under the Tsing Ma road-and-rail suspension bridge, the world's longest and a symbol of the wealth and know how that make Hong Kong so valuable to China.

Other than the safety selector at the back of the rifle, instead of at the pistol grip for the thumb to manipulate, the Type 95, even at this point, was a better rifle than the SA80 the British were using here. The guns probably had some mechanical issues to work out still, but nice rifles.

@@hass6293 basically, all the normal stuff people know about SA80. Not particularly reliable, they spent something insane like two thousand dollars fixing them per rifle and they still aren't anything great, they're heavy, one of the worst manuals of arms on the planet, blah blah blah Stuff that isn't particularly known: The accuracy standard is really bad. How bad? A 5-7 MOA rifle would be able to pass through the factory. I'm not saying Sa80 are that bad but one that was would make it to service. "but they're really accurate" is literally "I am able to hit the target" confidence with the weapon from training and good optics plus cope for having nothing else good to say about it. They're likely less accurate than your average M4, for instance. There's goofy stuff in it that honestly enrages me like having to remove upper handguard to take off optic or carry handle. Why, I ask again, why? Yay, we're like halfway through. Stuff that REALLY is at the bottom of the SA80 Garbage iceberg: The ammunition is trash, some of if not THE worst in NATO. It's relatively low pressure and low velocity, and barely meets the SS109 spec. How low? It won't reliably cycle the M4, which is overgassed for an AR15. Because of this, there's currently two adopted 5.56 types in the British Army: L15 and L31 (Asomething for each, forgot the variants). One of them is for the SA80s and one is for the Royal Marines and friends' C7s and C8s. How low velocity? Despite being a bullpup, ostensibly entirely for the purpose of having more barrel for your length and fitting a 20 inch barrel in, it gets less velocity with this ammo than the American M4 does with M855A1. Despite the 14.5. It'd probably be comparable in a 12.5, which, if you cut an AR down that short, is about as long as an L85 if the stock is fully extended. And much lighter. How's the bullet construction? please tell me the bullet construction is good and the round is lethal lol no, the British use projectiles that have pretty bad construction for lethality. They intentionally limit fragmentation and expansion because they like misinterpreting the Hague. M855A1 rips people apart, and normal M855 is more lethal. In my opinion, the worst thing about Sa80 is somehow not the rifle, but the ammunition. It is unusually low lethality for 5.56, it is unusually low velocity, and it does not even take advantage of the bullpup pairing. The British have a nasty history of using a bullpup that makes no sense with the ammunition used, dating all the way back to EM-2, which I could also spew about if you'd like.

    b. davis I am not living in HK now but I do still follow news in HK. The current state in HK is simply bad. HK is certainly losing its freedom though the government still claims the one country two system works. Media censorship is getting worse and most of the so called economic development policies only benefit rich tycoons in HK who also do with China. The cost of living is getting expensive and housing is hardly affordable, since the current government is far less enthusiastic to develop affordable public housing for Hong Kong people. There are a lot more issues in HK I haven't talked about. But so far, those above issues are the major ones that I can think of.

Think of it like this, the British got out because they did not think they could defeat China/did not want to go to war with China. So Hong Kongers are left behind. Hong Kong became what it was because of the special relationship that developed under British rule -- but the ideal rather than the handover would have been to let Hong Kong become its own country, just like India. That is what needs to happen, but sadly now in 2019 it looks like things are slowly getting worse and worse.

The 99-year lease was not made with the PRC. The second the criminal regime of Chairman Mao took over, that deal should have been made null and void. Either keep the territory or grant it full independence should have been the course of the British.

  • @RS-rj5sh

The British tried that. The Chinese simply said "no" it's ours as of 1 July 1997 when the 99 year "lease" of the New Territories ended. Hong Kong Island had actually been ceded in perpetuity (forever) to the British by the Qing Dynasty, however the PRC refused to accept that and demanded it's return together with the new territories.
