Hong Kong marks 25 years since handover to China - BBC News

Hong Kong is marking the 25th anniversary of its handover from the UK to China.
For more than 150 years Hong Kong was a British colony but in 1997 it was handed back to China.
The question was how capitalist, libertarian Hong Kong would fare under Communist Chinese rule.
Beijing promised that Hong Kong's civil liberties and freedom - restricted on the Chinese mainland - would be preserved for at least 50 years, under an arrangement known as "one country, two systems".
At first little seemed to change, but in time China sought to exercise more control, leading to mass protests.
Recently a sweeping new National Security Law effectively banned dissent in Hong Kong.
Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reporting by World Affairs Editor John Simpson.

If sharp criticism disappears entirely, mild criticism will become harsh. If mild criticism is also not allowed, silence will be considered ulterior motives. If silence is no longer allowed, it would be a crime to praise not enough effort. If only one voice is allowed to exist, then the only voice that exists is a lie.

What you said about different voices, is the final implementation of one voice a little louder than the other, and then take the louder side? Just like the abortion prohibition law in the United States, the voice of religion advocating that children in their stomachs have the right to life is louder than that of pregnant women, so it's ridiculous to ban abortion

After more than a century of colonisation, most Hong Kongers share the same values and social systems like the local Brits, more than a lot of European. Forcing them to be ruled by the communist Chinese government is utterly immoral and inhumane. Who pulled up China's stock market when it was at its lowest point? China's intricate mutual lending and mutual guarantees between banks are about to explode. Who covered up the information, and who kept it from detonating? Who wants to pull up the stock market and then run away? A series of unemployment, the bank directly zeroed the people's money, forcing the rich to buy real estate, and the company is heavily indebted, but the CCP still spends money on the outside world and ignores the suffering of the people. Is the coin with good intentions? It can only be said that your western world thinks too simplistically, because your greed will ruin the country, and sell the country for votes. Look at the European countries such as Germany, France, and Yi, who have fallen into a trap and have no basis. The CCP's anti-humanity can't be done without him, only you can't think of it, it will give you sweetness, and the sugar coating of poison will make you sink step by step. When China did not join the WTO, the world was still running very well. Only greed will drag it down. Break the world. Buying an airplane from China and France is really that simple. Of course not. There is a denial. When you work hard to build an airplane and ship it, the attached conditions will come. This is called speculation without losing the rice. Taiwan's fruit is like pineapple, lotus, mist, and Sakyamuni fishery. Stop it when you say it, and let the people of Taiwan complain about the Taiwan government. This is their untrustworthiness and shamelessness. If they want to cut off the supply of their chips, they will not say anything.

Most freedom fighters in HK supported violence against anyone who didn't support their politics. Almost Eeery weekend for 5 months someone somwhere would be beaten to a pulp by the mob because they dared to exercise free speech and condemned rioters' vandalism. Many protestors were demanding with their key slogan "five demands not one less" where one of the key demand was that anyone arrested for vandalism or beating up unarmed innocents or attacking the police must be released unconditionally. In effect, Freedom fighters demanded the rule of law should not apply to them, like they must be treated like nobles from antiquity who should be above the law, on top of being able to legally commit treason. Yes you heard that right. It WAS possible to legally commit treason in Hong Kong because there was no national security laws before 2020. So HK activists flew to Congress and asked for MORE economic sanctions against China AND Hong Kong in the middle of a trade war. These activists weren't even elected as HK representatives, and even if they were, it was going to far to ask for economic sanctions against your own country that has 200 times more people than Hong Kong. How do you fight for democracy if you weaken the rule of law, which is the foundation of democracy? None of the activists condemned the violent rioters when when asked repeatedly by the local media, calling the violence "not ideal " because condemning violence would alienate the hard core voters. Why were the Democrats in Hong kong arrested? They BROKE the election law on purpose and they were warned legally by the government before they went ahead as well. Why were the newspapers shut down? They literally incited violence with their reports throughout the riots. Imagine the Capitol hill riot which was organised by Proud Boys and Qons were in fact all linked to a US media company that happened to have funding from a foreign entity. Do you think the US government would not shut down such media company? Newspapers that literally organise protests and incite violence are very different in nature than just reporting alternative facts. Everyday the government in Hong kong is being criticised over a huge number of social issues on local Chinese newspapers. Sadly the impression from western media seems to suggest that criticism is nowhere to be found.

It’s now 25 years since Hong Kong was returned to China following 156 years under British rule. As you can imagine, the West are having a hard time coping with China’s celebrations, despite the fact that Hong Kong was initially taken by brute military force after Britain's illegal shipments of heroin to China were confiscated and destroyed by the Qing Dynasty. Here’s a quick history. By the 1800s, Britain had grown extremely fond of Chinese goods, mainly tea and china. British merchants were making a lot of money bringing Chinese goods back to Britain, but they encountered an issue: Britain didn’t have anything China wanted to buy back, so there was a huge trade imbalance. Britain decided to play dirty, growing opium, the key ingredient of heroin, in British India for shipment to China in the hope of making enough back in the illicit trade to fund their new addiction to tea. Don’t forget, heroin was illegal in China, but Britain was desperate to even out trade so who cares, right? Before too long, China had millions of heroin addicts which, rightfully so, worried the government who decided they had to act. In May of 1839, Britain’s Chief Superintendent of trade, a man named Charles Elliot, was forced to hand over more than 1,400 tons of the drug that was being stored in a warehouse in Canton for illegal distribution in China. It was then destroyed, which angered the British side and eventually led to the First Opium War, where the British smashed China militarily, culminating in the take over of Nanjing, which literally means Southern Capital, in late 1842. China was then forced to sign the Treaty of Nanjing, the first of the so-called “unequal treaties”, which ordered the Emperor to not only pay the British for the destroyed opium, but also to cover the cost of the war, open more ports to accept British heroin, and give up Hong Kong which would be used as a trading port to boost the drug trade. The British achieved a 99-year lease of Hong Kong in 1898. The Treaty of Nanjing is seen as the beginning of China’s “Century of Humiliation,” a very important aspect influencing China’s foreign policy to this day. Fast forward to 1997, and Hong Kong was to be handed back to its rightful owner after what ended up being 156 years of British rule. What’s infuriating is that the British lie to this day about how Hong Kongers were treated during that time. Many people don’t realize that in more than 150 years of British rule, the island was lorded over undemocratically by white Governors installed by London, giving Hong Kong residents no say in how they were governed. It’s quite hilarious that Western media argue that China has waged an “idealogical war against the influence of Western values” in Hong Kong, including “democracy” and “press freedom”. Perhaps the staff should read more history. Britain always had a suspicion of Hong Kongers and often violently suppressed their calls for democracy on the island. In 1856, Britain’s Colonial Office rejected calls for more local representation, saying Chinese were had no respect for “the main principles upon which social order rests.” Racist much ! Popular grassroots movements on the island were squashed, and the press was censored by Britain in order to stop such movements gaining momentum. So much for “press freedom”. It was only until Britain was getting ready to hand the island back to China in the 1990s that they started to rush in democratic reform, almost certainly as a way to spite China and cause issues they didn’t want to deal with themselves in their 156 years of rule. In what seems like a pure irony, Hong Kong rioters waved British flags as they demanded full democracy there, and many young locals seem blatantly unaware of how Britain treated the population while they were in control. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that he won’t give up on Hong Kong, and argued that China had “disturbed” the foundations on which modern Hong Kong had been built. WHAT FOUNDATIONS ? ! YOU DIDN’T GIVE HONG KONG PEOPLE A SAY IN GOVERNANCE FOR 156 YEARS ! ! ! Hong Kong people now have more say in their government that they have in nearly 200 years, and that is thanks to China.

I would like to include one thing, Britain did have something that the Chinese wanted Gold and silver. Something the British empire was running low on and that's when the opium came into play. From my understanding it was to sell opium for gold/silver to the Chinese and use that (gold and silver) to buy tea.

The entanglement between the UK and Hong Kong ended on 1 July 1997. If still angry. Just ask Mrs Thatcher.
