+Buffoon1980 You didn't love this film, you just loved Super Man. I was the same. In front of the screen, I liked Super Man, despite the fact that he was outmatched majority of the time in it. But in the back of my head, I always questioned all the abilities and the fact that Lois lane could breathe in space. And I was actually too young to wonder about that bs.

***** No sir. Superman II had like the weirdest production ever. Richard Donner filmed about 80% of it, then went back to completing the first one, after which he was fired. Then Richard Lester was brought in and decided to reshoot a bunch of stuff so he could get director's credit for the movie (51%). Lester's got released to theatres, then an extended version of Lester's cut got released to TV. Years later, Donner came back and re-edited all his stuff back in, took demo footage and added new CGI shots which got released as the Richard Donner Cut. The version you're referring to is the Donner Cut. The version i'm referring to is the Lester TV cut. In that one, Superman throws the villains into the pit, then later you see the Alaska Police carting them off. I have a copy on a hundred year old VHS tape. haha.

What I never understood is with all the villains that Superman has why they felt the need to re-use Lex Luthor so many times? On top of that they plans they had Luthor carrying out were the stupidest things that could possibly be dreamt up. I mean even when they had another villain (Zod and company) they still had to shoehorn Lex in there with some crap about him tracking Superman back to the Fortress THEN trying to team up with Zod and his group. The only other time he didn't appear what did they do they made up another Lex-like bad guy to replace him. What a total lack of imagination and effort.

DarthRushy I'm down with him in the first movie (although I wish they had come up with a better plot than trying to sink the California coast to make worthless dessert land valuable but he really has no place in the second movie with Zod and his partners there to be more than enough bad guy for the second movie. I also totally support his NOT being in the third movie but I don't support them replacing him with a made up character who is basically just like him and I don't even remember what his plan was. I kind of recall it having something to do with coffee futures or some other non-sense. I also don't think he should've been in the fourth movie either. Again, I don't recall his plot but I think it had something to do with arms dealing so any old international arms dealer would've worked. So, yeah he should've just been in the first one with a better plan. The second one should've been all Zod and company. The third one should've been Brainiac (as was planned at one point) since it had to do with computers and technology. The fourth one should've just never existed in the first place.

  • @LibraGamesUnlimited

***** What in the second movie? Best as I recall all he was there for was to help Superman trick Zod and the others into using that chamber on him to take away his powers (which at some point he switched around, don't recall when he had time to do that). Still, there are bound to be other ways to do that or hell figure out a better way for him to deal with them because that plan was a little hokey in the first place. In fact that whole chamber thing was kind of silly all on it's own. It's supposed to take his powers away forever, except when he suddenly discovers he needs them really badly then suddenly it can be reversed by the power of plot convenience. :) I don't even know how it's supposed to work when he gets his powers from how his body processes energy from our sun. Seems unlikely a machine could change that.

Samuel Kan Yeah, been that way for awhile but then again even in the 89's/90's Batman movies they used other characters. Yeah their version of Two-Face was way more Joker-like than he should've been but at least he wasn't actually the Joker. Of course, as I recall, Jack Nicholson had it in his contract that the Joker would die at the end of the movie as he didn't want to do another movie and he didn't want someone else coming in and taking over the part from him after so even if they wanted to they couldn't use him again, in that series, anyway.

There are several moments in which I see a tiny little GOOD movie, struggling to breathe inside the big BAD movie. First of all, we saw Superman as more of a citizen of the world than just an American. That was progress. The premise of Superman deciding for himself to disarm the planet of nuclear weapons. That was a pretty logical conclusion for the series, and relatively bold for 1987. Secondly, I can't blame Christopher Reeve. Third, Margot Kidder was actually better than ever. She doesn't look too great, but her acting was pretty compelling. It actually feels like there's been some sort of character arc since the first movie. Fourth, we get the possibility of Superman getting sick and dying. They took that pretty far! Five, locating the scenes in Clark's apartment, instead of the Fortress, that was different, and oddly cool. That's an example of "cheap" being GOOD. Six, I liked the goofy scene when he tries to be present as both Clark Kent and Superman in the same place -- it isn't realistic, but it's entertaining. But, of course, the movie was rushed on a shit budget, and that's why it sucks. Which it totally does, suck.

Just know in advance that it didn't turn out very good. The original intentions for the film were pretty decent, but the producers refused to spend the time or money to do it right. The script still needed work, too. You'll see what I'm talking about from the first second of the opening credits.

"The franchise" definitely includes television series. Smallville was fantastic. As for the claim that it's not about Superman: it's about the last son of Krypton, Kal El, aka Clark Kent, aka The Man of Steel, aka Superman. The fact that he does not identify as such or conform to the traditional role of his character until the end, does not change how he represents the same entity that is later known as Superman.

Man of Steel was way better than this crap, in my opinion. Finally a darker, more realistic hero, who kicks ass for real. Sure Man of Steel was a lot of action, less story, they need to work on that...but to be honest we all know the story already. Lois Lane wasn´t a blast in Man of Steel, but the actor as Superman was good.
