Actually it proves that plot isn't that important if you have great characters, great dialogue and a good setting. And let's face it - in most cases the plot is like a laundry list of the same items in the same order at the exact time you expect them. This is why a movie without much of a plot can do so well if the things I mentioned initially are well done. It also explains Tarantino's success. His movies do have a plot but it's usually the same straight forward revenge one. But you simply don't care much because you are mesmerized by great actors bringing great characters to life. Even if all they do is discussing how europeans call quarterpounders.

But it DOES have a plot - or at least, a plot structure. Guy rises from nothing via crime. Guy gets involved with a woman/women who do drugs, often at the expense of the woman who actually loves him. Guy loses everything once he and/or his lady's drug habit gets him into trouble. Guy finishes the film a nobody, right back where he started. You can apply some or all of this to most Scorsese epics since 1990. He was remaking his own classic for years.

4:43 🙄 no this movie doesn’t « glorify violence and toxic masculinity » just because it shows them without saying to the audience that it’s baaaad every five minutes (like recent movies that infantilize them). Same thing with the wolf of walt street, showing bad behaviours that exist in real life, especially in some circles or eras, is not glorifying or apologizing them

it shouldn't have to be explained. but this attitude is an offshoot of the infamous 'cancel culture'. viewers are treated increasingly like little children. if something is baaad m'kay, filmmakers are expected to be super-explicit about it and shake their finger ten times. bad.
