    @@Ben-il3oc Because they introduced ten major characters that virtually no one had ever heard of before in one movie at the same time and then expected us to be able to keep track of all of them. It would have been a great series, but honestly the entire movie was just "we have to find Shmalkemex!" followed by forty minutes of the trolley problem. Also, there were massive issues with scaling, the flow of time, etc.

    Honestly, Eternals should've been a Disney+ miniseries. It can give enough time to flesh out the characters, and set up more world building.(Looking at the Deviants, ehem). And for those who'll complain about the budget, Loki and Wandavision had phenomenal CGI, and they became hits.

    Oh the other hand, I do not think the answer to "this thing was kinda bad" should be "but what if there was more of it?" The problem with the characters wasn't that there wasn't enough time to flesh them out, the problem with the characters was that none of them were interesting to watch except Kingo and he decides he has something better to do about 2/3 of the way through the movie and just leaves.

    The moral dilemma in this film was ridiculous. Killing existing people for the potential of new people being born in the far future isn't a neutral exchange. You cause harm by killing someone, you don't cause harm by not birthing someone.

  • @ohedd

    @ohedd

    2 жыл бұрын

    Really bad take. Harm mitigation isn't the only relevant value. Maximizing the net amount of lives people are happy to enjoy is of value too, is it not? Also, _almost_ the entire reason why killing people is bad is because you're forfeiting a person's potential of living a happy life in the future. So you're already conceding that potential for future life is a good value, only you added the really weird and arbitrary distinction that it only applies to currently living humans. I'm sure you agree that we should have a moral discount rate of zero across _space_ (so people geographically separated from ourselves have equal moral value). I propose we should also have a moral discount rate of zero across _time._ According to your model, working to stop climate change or preventing some future existential threat is completely value neutral provided nobody who is born today is likely to suffer the consequences.

    The entire finale and *"point"* of this movie could've been saved if they needed the Deviant leader, who had absorbed their comrades, to join the Uni-Mind in order to stop the Emergence. Sticking it to the Celestials would've been the _perfect_ motivation for them to put aside their millennia of animosity and join forces, and the fact he'd absorbed two of their members' powers made it feel like this was literally the original plan. It honestly would've been so much more complete of a story and movie.

    My biggest problem with the plot of the film is that the Eternals say they weren’t to interfere in non-Celestial related affairs even when Thanos was involved, but also say that to make a Celestial you need a certain population of intelligent life on the planet. If anything, doesn’t that mean basically every single Eternal in the universe would get involved considering this guy’s whole plan is to cut the universe population in half?

The Eternals had nothing to do with it and a) didn't have time to find out b) weren't in contact and c) didn't have time to do anything.

    S Ryan is right. Try to even remember the entire time Thanos himself spent on Earth. After he got the Time Stone from Dr Strange he teleported straight to Wakanda, mowed down some Avengers who were more of a minor annoyance than a threat, got his last stone, and Snap... what was it, less than a minute? At the time the Ethernals were scattered around the globe, so who could've reached the battlefield in time to intervene? Makkari? She was aboard the ship, oblivious to anything happening for who knows how long. It would be funny if she never even knew of the Snap. Thanos's plan unfolded too fast.

    The Earth's population doubles every 70 years or so, so even without the Blip, the Snap would have been undone in less than a century. (Which is why Thanos's plan was fundamentally stupid to begin with.) For a group of people that have been around for thousands of years, an extra seventy years' wait probably didn't seem like a big enough deal to put their sneakers on for, never mind gearing up to fight.

    especially that Wanda was mostly unaware what is happening (or in deep denial) and after she fully realized it, she actually stopped. It's like we have this trend now to be sensitive about mental illness and defend people in deep depression for their acts, but then also only focus on the surface of Wanda's actions. Even though the show went to such a length to explain and explore her state of mind.

    I don't think Druig was doing it the whole time. Maybe he was. I don't care. This movie was boring and all the heroes had zero self-confidence except for Thena, who was going crazy, and Discount Superman who was the bad guy for actually doing his job. This movie was written by a philosophy major who got C+s. It tried to be deep, but just kept on going in circles while navel gazing and smelling its own farts.
