Of the things Lynch totally mishandled in the film, I think the worst sin was Alia and her terrible dialog. It was bad enough that he changed the entire meaning of the story by having it rain (thus totally undercutting everything we learn about Arakis before the end, everything that is supposed to come after). But he took the one truly unique and fascinating character and turned her into an example of how one should never write nor deliver dialog.

It’s actually the director’s pseudonym: Alan Smithee (also Allen Smithee) is an official pseudonym used by film directors who wish to disown a project. Coined in 1968 and used until it was formally discontinued in 2000, it was the sole pseudonym used by members of the Directors Guild of America (DGA) when a director, dissatisfied with the final product, proved to the satisfaction of a guild panel that they had not been able to exercise creative control over a film. Because a huge amount of the book is just the various character's internal monologues. It's their thoughts about the subtleties and subtext of what other people are saying. Given that so little of what's important in the book is actually said out loud, this was David Lynch's solution. I think we can all agree it was an imperfect solution, but in this one regard he really did try to stick to the source material.

Yeah, it's pretty much condensing the story towards Paul's perspective so you don't get too overwhelmed by the details and lore. Although there remains a lot of that still. And his constant visions of the oppressive destiny laying before him never seems like cheesy white savior chosen one power fantasy, but a terrifying burden threatening to break him. Which is transported via a score that is constantly eerie, ominous and overwhelming. The sun rising above the horizon feels like a declaration of war in itself. Everything is large to boggle the mind, the designs of buildings, vehicles and objects are bordering on alien. It is a joy to behold on the big screen.

@@MrHodoAstartes, in the book I got the impression that the main subject of his dreams was the jihad spreading across the universe - although in fairness maybe that's more the second half. In the 2021 film he seems to dream mainly of Chani, and the only reference to the jihad was once in the stilltent.

I recall enjoying it when I first saw it (don't remember when/how, tho'), but after reading the book, and watching the SciFi/SyFy mini-series, and then re-watching the Lynch film, I think I like the mini-series better. I still like the Lynch film, tho', esp. since its style/aesthetic was used for the Dune games (I enjoyed the 1st one, an adventure game, but loved Dune 2...I think I still prefer Dune 2 over Dune 2k and Emperor BfD)
