    It is rather bad, but they kinda got there eventually. And I get why they're confused about the adjective "dutch". Because it not only refers to the people and language from the Netherlands but also to Germans and Germany in some contexts. E.g. Pennsylvania Dutch (speak German), Dutch Angle (from German Cinema). Also dutch is one of the official languages of Belgium.

  • @andreaslaroi8956

    @andreaslaroi8956

    5 жыл бұрын

    NorthernLight: Yes, that's what I meant. Thanks for adding the etymology. The issue is that all uses of "dutch" come from "Deutsch" or older variants. Only in english (and a few related languages) are the people and the language of the Netherlands called dutch. The dutch call themselves "Nederlanders" and speak "Nederlands". The Germans call them "Niederländer" who speak "Niederländisch". The french call language and people "néerlandais". Only english doesn't care and basically calls them Germans....

    Alright, greetings from Europe and I think this little geography interlude was even more entertaining than the rest ;o). Little secret though, at least some of us Europeans don't learn much American geography either, so don't worry. Anyway, in Belgium you have parts where they speak (mainly) French and parts where they speak (mainly) Dutch, both are official languages in Belgium. Historically the French and Dutch part of Belgium are not very fond of each other, which is why I at least have never met someone, who openly admited they spoke both languages fluently, but I believe these days kids learn both languages in school. Don't fact check me on this though. Some parts also speak German, that's only a very small region close to the border though. I am not a huge Arnold fan, but I could listen to Dan's impression of him for hours!

    As a kid, I totally missed that opening shot of the spaceship, yet it was still obvious to me that it's an alien given the technology being used by the Predator. The mystery is more about what kind of alien it is. Also, didn't the first trailer for Terminator 2 make it seem as if both machines are bad? I remember the Nostalgia Critic talking about that and being surprised in the theater.

    I had no idea that spaceship scene was in this movie before this honest trailer! We had this on VHS for years and my brother recorded this from HBO, but now I'm finding out he missed the intro, because were we have it, it starts roughly with them in the helicopter.

    Showing the spaceship at the beginning of the movie was a stroke of genius. A lot of people would have guessed that something else was out there. And many of them, when they get it wrong, they get angry at the movie, the director, the writers. "oh, no.. based on what i saw it should have been this or that.. Stupid movie , stupid writers!" There are a lot of disturbed people out there. The way they did it however, they did not really reveal a lot about the villain, except that it was an alien and everybody was happy.

    From Belgium and can confirmed. People from the Netherlands speak Dutch, in Belgium we speak french and/or flemish, and flemish is a variation of dutch. It's like the french speaked in Canada, it's a variation of the actual french.

    To be honest I first saw this movie when i was about 10 or 12 and I don't even remember the alien ship at the start from my first viewing. So there was no impact lost there. I just remember some crazy alien thing hunting people and it stuck with me ever since. To the point that i have watched every Predator sequel since, no matter how bad they are! Damn you nostalgia!

    I heard/read recently the spacecraft at the beginning was a studio note, in fact, I think it was added completely without McTiernan's involvement after he was done with the project...

    Some actors who later went on to direct (and/or write) other installments of the same franchise: Leonard Nimoy, , William Shatner, and Jonathan Frakes on Star Trek; Ben Affleck on Justice League (though he later removed himself); Jon Favreau on Iron Man; Sylvester Stallone on Rambo (wrote the later ones) and Rocky (wrote the first, wrote and directed most of the rest); Elizabeth Banks on Pitch Perfect
