And in this case, they weren't even referencing something that had been done in a previous movie, but rather the actual production of the movie (though which I never heard about til recently). That Chris Evans REALLY didn't like the original Captain America outfit, and there was some ribbing that went on around the set about it how it fit him in the first Avengers. Though even once done watching Winter Soldier, it hadn't even occurred to me his outfit had changed from Avengers until someone pointed it out to me.
That last segment of Danielle, Joe and Spencer dying of laughter at the 48 deleted starrings while Dan gets upset is Screen Junkies in a nutshell and I love it. Maybe its missing a confused Roth

I actually really connected with this movie and the main character. With and without amnesia (and I'm an adult white male). The whole 'people sortof-but-not-really believing in you' thing and calling you "'too emotional' because it's what they choose to believe and belief is self-reinforcing" is just as applicable for men as women. But my sister also really loved it, so maybe that's more reflective of our parental situation and people who grew up in different environment might disagree.

Oh God, Dan's reaction is the best!!! Just makes me think of "Liar, Liar" everytime!
I thought the cat scratch was a funny understated response to what everyone assumed was some badass moment. I liked that moment personally.
"Now you're a man, a manny, man, man!" Come on, that song is precisely a parady of action movie testosterone songs.
I really enjoyed the change to the Skrulls because being one of two massive militaristic species of aliens locked into an eternal war is just boring. This way they can add some depth to the conflict and due to the Skrulls' powerset, they can still dismantle a country's leadership with a small handful of radicals. I also liked that Fury uses the none event that took his eye to motivate people as he did with Coulson's death. He uses lies and half-truths to motivate and manipulate, it's kinda his whole deal.
@emilyfiallos4900
5 жыл бұрын
I agree! The thing with Fury is that outside of Captain Marvel, he's depicted as this epic badass. The fact that Goose was the one to take his eye and that he lies about it to compensate for it not being a cool enough story humanizes him. It adds more dimensions to his character than just being THE Nick Fury.
That episode of the Simpsons had the best line of the entire series. "Super-liminal?". "Hey you! Join the Navy!" "Yeah, ok!"
The whole eye thing was pretty good imho bc it is established that Nick Fury uses stuff to lie and manipulate people so him using the "legend" of how he lost an eye in an alien invasion is very up his alley.

The "I just a girl" No Doubt moment in the movie should have been an "epic hero" theme. She never got a theme. They were trying so hard to reference the 90's that they forgot to build to her hero moment. The song totally took me out the movie.

Gwen Stefani played a private concert I was at last year, still did a bunch of No Doubt stuff off of Tragic Kingdom and a couple off Return of Saturn. She still got it.
Contrary to popular perception, the Skrull are often portrayed sympathetically in modern comics rather than as outright villains.
KoTOR is the only time I've seen amnesia really pulled off well as a story telling trope. Bourne was decent using it as a jumping point, but Damon's acting REALLY pulled it off.
Watching Dan progressively get more angry as the video goes is the best part about ScreenJunkies.

I will say to Dan's criticism that her being less emotional is the *point*. The main crux of her character arc is self actualization in the face of gaslighting and lies by the Kree. When she gets emotional in the beginning and threats Jude Law's character with a blast it's a showing of how her true power is neutered because of the suppression of her emotion. I will agree though that the execution is mishandled as evidence of Dan misreading it, and just to the overall structure of her arc in the film. Then again it can be more effective towards women than men, so it can miss Dan in part due to that. Not calling Dan a misogynist or anything, dude went out of his way to argue facts concerning Captain Marvel's success, clearly he's not motivated by hatred as other KZreadrs are. Just suggesting there might be a blind spot due to his gender.

Exactly. I mean I get that the intended target group is more likely to connect with the message, but it is there. Sometimes one has just accept that a movie was not made for you. Plus, Dan is also wrong with the assessment that the discussion is between "worst movie ever/best movie ever"...it was more "worst movie ever vs "can we please just enjoy this movie which might not be perfect but really spoke to us?" Nobody has to praise the movie in the heavens...just maybe listen to the people who connected with it? There is more to mine than Dan gives the movie credit for.
@wyverntark
5 жыл бұрын
Hard agree. Though I will note that Roth also took part in the SJ review of the movie, and also didn't seem to key in on this aspect either. Also, thinking about it again in reaction to Dan's argument (his point about how the scene in the beginning with the Kree team infiltrating the planet could have been written to underscore this point is well taken) I'll note that when she does start breaking out from the effects of being conditioned and gaslit she gets significantly more emotive and emotional, it's just not all typical "male" coded emotions. If anything, in that final battle in space she's joyful! That's an emotion too, and probably one Yon-Rogg was equally if not more likely to try and suppress.

@@wyverntark I do think the filmmakers could have made this theme of Carol's character arc stronger or at least more easily read for an audience that doesn't really take a firm grasp on psychological manipulation, especially in what is supposed to be an action blockbuster when the core opposition to many protagonists in this genre is physical. Of course women themselves can overlook or miss the the theme of her character arc as well, for many reasons, but one of those not being gender. I'm not even saying Dan missed it because of that. If anything it's just a part of it. There's also the directing, writing, personal experience, genre, expectations, etc. I would figure it would be a pretty interesting conversation to have with him. I don't really blame anyone who isn't actively projecting hatred on the film that misses it considering the low bar of thematic depth blockbusters usually underscore. I was surprised myself to see a big film tackle a psychological topic from a gendered perspective as this. As I study psychology though, I can as myself have a better grasp on the theme than another male.
