I worked for David’s bridal for over a year and they are SO HARD on all their employees about making sales goals. They would write up people if they couldn’t get people to buy crazy priced dresses. Your experience doesn’t surprise me.

Desiree Cabrera I was so confused about it too and so we just all went to my parents Airbnb and we had appies and drinks. My parents kindly went and did a Costco haul for meats and cheeses and stuff which was amazing. My cousin just got married and loved how easy and stress-free our “rehearsal dinner” was that she did the same thing. They rented a room for a couple hours on the campus they got married on and the grooms family left rehearsal early to walk over and prep wings and salads and snacks. Way more affordable than an actual dinner and it’s nicer to create the mingling atmosphere. We had all our aunts and uncles and grandparents plus the bridal party and their significant others. In my family it was close to 40 people maybe more. But so fun.

I would never shop at David's Bridal after an experience I had when I went for an interview while I was in university looking for a part time job. It was a group interview and one of the first questions was 'what is the first question you ask a bride' and someone responded 'ask them their budget' and they responded with 'NO! Absolutely not, you never ask a bride a budget, the cheapest dress you should pull is $1,000... If she needs something cheaper she will tell you, but you need to get her to fall in love with a pricier dress'. Then they pushed the need to 'up sell everything from accessories to bridesmaids dresses and shoes' etc. Needless to say, they called the next day to offer me a job and I respectfully declined, nor will I spend a dime in that store for my future wedding. I get that its business, but uck...

Wow...that's horrible. I feel the same though...it is a business, and every bride has a right to say "no," but a lot of people (like myself) aren't great with confrontation, and I hate being pressured into things. I will just leave if I feel like I'm being pushed.

    • Sam • the reason for the up sale is b/c in that business you work off commission & you have a sale mark you have to meet. That’s why I’m sales you’re supposed to keep asking how the customer feels. If she (the original poster) didn’t mentally check out after hearing that, I’m 99% sure that the manager would have went on to teach them how to be assertive without being pushy. (Giving the bride room to say no while also making sure the brides guest don’t take over the appointment.)

I bought my dress at David's Bridal and my consultant was SO kind and helpful! I had a much better shopping experience there than I had at other, local boutiques, as the smaller places put a lot of pressure on me to buy the same day, whereas my consultant at David's Bridal told me to go home and think about it, came back on a day when she wasn't scheduled so I could try on the dress with my mom there, and was generally awesome. So it definitely depends on location

My David’s Bridal experience was awful! I went in with my daughter, age 11, to look at a bridesmaid dress for her. She could pick any dress she wanted as long as it wasn’t white or red. The sales gal was very pushy and tried to talk her out of a dress that she loved. We both left in tears and ended up finding the perfect dress at JC Penny.

I got my wedding dress on clearance at David's bridal and had a great experience. I also picked my bridesmaids dresses from David's because I have multiple bridesmaids in different states. My maid of honor went to one, and the sales Consultant made a rude comment about her weight and she ended up not even trying anything on. Another bridesmaid went to a different store and had no problems and she is bigger than my maid of honor. It depends on the store for sure

Same. I walked in, went straight to the clearance rack, found my dream dress for 60% off! (I had tried on dresses in other salons previously so I knew what style and size to look for) I got their color guide and circled colors I liked for my bridesmaids- I'm doing a mix-matched look so they can all get a shade, style, and cut that they like, at a price they like, as long as its floor length and a shade of blue. A friend of mine did this when I was one of her bridesmaids and it made finding a dress SO easy and stress-free.

Daughter just got married; used David’s Bridal for Bridesmaid dresses, a different boutique for her dress. DB worked out well because she had 8 bridesmaids: one who was living in England, one in CA with the rest scattered through MD. Most went to brick and mortar to try on different styles but like you ended up ordering online with quick delivery. Although the bridesmaids were all in the same color and length of dress, each was in a different style. The overall effect was lovely and each girl felt she was in a dress that was flattering to her body. DB also had a selection of dresses that were appropriate for mother of bride/groom that weren’t the typical “old lady” frumpfest. Purchased off the rack even though it required more than hemming alterations (I’m SHORT and there are no petites). Did not care for the salesperson’s attitude when I asked about alterations cost and turn-around time.

I am a widow (6 years), over 50 and size 18 bride to be. I knew my shopping experience was going to be emotional. It is not easy to find a dress that you can actually try on if you aren’t small. I needed the options this boutique could provide. I stopped in a local Davids Bridal to ask if I could try on ANY dress without my friends and family along so I could have my emotional moment by myself. I explained my situation and they were so kind. I wanted my real dress shopping experience to be fun and I knew I needed to get through this step first. They were so kind and did spend the time to help me find a lovely dress and then gave me the time on my own to process my emotions. There was no pressure at all. I was happily married for 25 years even though the last 6 were very hard. I didn’t think I would fall in love again. My wedding planning process has been emotional as I work my way through it. Jamie, your videos are great and you have been such a great help even though I am not a young first time bride. Thank you! I made an appointment a couple of weeks later with my Mom, Sister and a couple friends. My consultant was very nice. At one point one of my friends had picked a dress very much like my original wedding gown and I couldn’t get it off fast enough. We got it back together and she helped me into a gown totally unlike any that I thought I wanted. It is perfect! My wedding isn’t until next July so I was shopping early like we are supposed to. I was called to pick up my dress 2 weeks later. I would say my experience was wonderful and I would recommend them myself.

Bride to-be here! I totally agree with this review!! I am getting married in a year, but a couple months ago we were planning on having it within 6 months, so I went to try on dresses. Overall had a good shopping experience with the sales person who was very kind and friendly, but was pressured into buying that day even though I had NO money set aside for wedding stuff yet. I ended up putting money on a dress, however, after a couple weeks I had HUGE doubts and felt that I was pressured to buy in store, with a "sale," as well as the shipping time thing that you had as well, and just didn't feel good about the dress, etc etc. Since I hadn't paid for it completely, the return process was simple and she even gave me a full refund which was not in the contract, so I REALLY appreciated that and left a good review for the store. In short, the product is good, the customer service I received was amazing, but the sales tactics definitely take away from the fun experience. I think I would have had a lot better luck finding THE dress if I had a supportive girl squad as well so that took some fun out of it too. TDLR; Customer service mainly good, but sales tactics are fishy.

Went to David's Bridal one time (and will never go back) when my best friend got engaged and needed to find her wedding dress. The shop was so full it was like a cattle call. The experience was completely impersonal. My friend tried on 3 dresses, the third dress she tried she said "This one is pretty, I like the blush color" but she was clearly underwhelmed and it wasn't "the one". But the consultant but a sign in one of my friend's hands that said "I Said Yes to the Dress at David's Bridal!" and a bell in her other hand that she was supposed to ring because she found the dress, and she was like "alright, go ahead and ring the bell!". She didn't even care that my friend clearly didn't love the dress, she wanted to get her out of the store and get her commission. My friend took the dress off and we left immediately.

I recently went to David’s Bridal to look for my dress, quick engagement and I knew I needed to buy off the rack. My consultant was awful - didn’t listen to me, didn’t pull the dresses I asked for, couldn’t answer questions about styles I’d seen online , and just left me in the room with dresses bagged. The dresses were such low quality and I left in tears. Exactly what you hope the experience WONT feel like...

I’m from England and I’d never heard of David’s bridal until I joined some Facebook groups for brides and most brides were from the USA. Everyone seemed to use David’s and I’d had no luck at any local boutiques and was quite desperate so when I googled David’s and saw they actually had stores in the U.K. I got some of my bridesmaids and drove 6 hours round trip to Scotland to look! We weren’t expecting much apart from a fun day out but we really really hoped they had something. It was the best decision we made! The lady we were assigned was amazing and she was the right balance of helpful but also gave us freedom and wasn’t pushy at all. We ended up picking the dresses but leaving without buying anything because we had to get all the girls’ sizes before ordering. They had a deal on which meant the £100 dresses were only £79 if I remember correctly? We rang up and ordered them and everything was okay. My only two complains would be that we were told they’d get shipped to us and they actually got shipped to the store (although this could have been a communication issue) meaning we had to go back and secondly that we were told 3 of the girls were tall and needed extra length dresses which cost £10 or £20 more, my tallest bridesmaid was 5’9 and she ended up having to basically get altered and cut off what we had paid more to have, I’d be curious to see what they’d have said if she’d been measured there. The dresses took a few months to arrive but as they were shipped for from the US we expected that and they did arrive exactly when they were predicted to so can’t really complain as we were told that and we ordered them well in advance. So I think in America and in England they’re totally different experiences. I’d recommend any UK bride to go there! My dresses were perfect and I’m so glad we took the chance!

Great video Jamie! I was married 9-7-2019 and did my shopping at David's Bridal. I also had a similar experience with my dress. So i tried on a dress i loved but it was sort of an off white. When we ordered it i told them i wanted white and they told me i might not get it in time by ordering it in white and the size i needed. I ended up having to order a smaller size and then had to spend more money for alterations. Then my bridesmaids also bought dresses. I told them the color and they picked the style they wanted. When they purchased their dresses they were told they had to purchase that night to get their dresses in time. I feel like they have good pricing on dresses but i would go elsewhere for alterations if you are able to.

Though Davids Bridal did not work for us for the Brides dress, the thing I liked about them was buying bridesmaid dresses, so many dresses and colors in stock for a group of girls to go in and try on at the same time. Then, when a dress and color was picked, the info could be sent to a bridesmaid that lived states away so she could walk in with the info and try on and order too. Plus the price was where our girls needed it to be.

For my appointment I had a great experience, the consultant was not too pushy and listened to what I was looking for. I didnt purchase it that day, but came back a few days later and the consultant was fine with that. For my dress, crinoline, belt, and veil it was around $1000. For my bridesmaids appointment, the consultant was really nice but we were sharing her with another group. Unfortunately the other group was very needy so my mom and I ended up grabbing sizes when needed. All the dressed fit well and were around $150 though, and came in really quickly!

I also felt pressured to buy a dress off the rack. It was pretty, but I was so anxious, and the salesperson was sort of like "it means you know!" Turns out it was several sizes too big and couldn't be altered down, so I found a sample sale dress that had everything I wanted at a local boutique.

I settled on David’s Bridal so all the girls could get together and physically try on dresses. We were there for over FOUR hours. I only had 3 girls trying dresses on and I (the bride) was the one who kept having to run to the racks for dresses. Your comment to feeling abandoned: I felt the exact same! We kept looking around like uhhh.? Where’d she go? After much frustration, tears, and hours later the girls all got a dress but definitely not the experience I was hoping for.

They liked that they had a good selection of styles while all being the same color and not having to worry if each dress matched or not. I loved it and would recommend it! David's Bridal recently opened a few stores here in the UK and I was really excited as there aren't that many budget friendly wedding dress options near me (my max was £550) and I really couldn't afford to go to a boutique. I had a really great experience with the salesperson, she was really helpful in picking out some styles that she thought would look great on me and was very supportive when I had a bit of 'oh god I hate my body' meltdown. I also like that they run styles in petite which I had not really seen elsewhere. There was a dress that I really liked but she urged me not to buy it that day, to go away and think about it any maybe look elsewhere and then come back if it was still the one I wanted. The only negative part of the experience is that the UK website does not have styles listed on it so when they rang to confirm my appointment, they asked me to go on the US website and note down the styles off there that I wanted to try. However when I turned up, they basically didn't stock any of the ones I picked out, so that was a bit of a waste of time! I did end up finding a dress I liked more in another 'off the peg' shop (£300, yaaasss!) however I'm planning to go back to David's to shop for my 2 bridesmaids. They have a lot more choice of styles than most places in the UK and the prices are very reasonable. I hope the appointment is as positive as my bridal one, I'm thinking maybe the UK business model is slightly different to the US one?

I really feel like it depends on the location and the consultant you have. I got my dress and my bridesmaid dresses from David's when my husband and I got married 10 years ago. Much more reasonably priced than the smaller boutiques. We got our bridesmaid dresses from David's for two of my friend's weddings, four years ago. All the experiences I had were good.

I had to get a dress from David's Bridal last year for a wedding this past winter as a bridesmaid, the experience was quick and easy trying on and picking up the dress. However red flag when my one local shop went under right after I picked up the dress. The company was not doing well. Flash forward to the week of the wedding and the zipper refuses to work! I assume its weight gain or something but figure I'll figure it out. The night before the wedding I'm determined to make it work, it took my brother and my fiancé working together to zip me up. My brother said the zipper kept coming off the track. My mom made a joke that the faulty zipper is why they went under. When I couldn't get the zipper back down, I told them I'll just sleep in the dress if I have to!! They were able to get it down but I was serious! Thank God the bride didn't want getting ready photos because in the morning again I needed the two guys to help me zip the dress. I got to the church and apparently ALL the bridesmaids and the mother of the bride had the same issue! One even needed to be sewn into the dress! For my wedding my girls are NOT using David's Bridal for sure even if the store near me was still open

I went wedding dress shopping with my sister in October. We went to a local bridal place and David's Bridal in the same day. Her experience was lightyears apart. We went to the local place first and the consultant was super attentive and listened to EXACTLY what my sister wanted. She also made sure any dresses we grabbed were within her budget. She found a dress she loved, but it was the first place she went to and wanted to make sure there wasn't another dress at DB that she liked better, but all in all it was a fantastic experience. Then we went to David's Bridal and she had a horrible experience. My other sister was in the dressing room helping her change while the consultant was nowhere to be found most of the time. The consultant pulled dresses that weren't even a little like what my sister asked for and some were over budget. When my sister had any questions, we had to literally search for the consultant to try and get answers. My sister probably tried on at least 10 dresses. The consultant told her she had one more dress in mind that she thought my sister would love and came back with the COMPLETE opposite style that my sister was looking for. The only thing she said specifically that she didn't want was a puffy princess style dress and that's what the lady brought her. In the end, we ended up going back to the local place and my sister got the initial dress she loved and was happy that her amazing consultant got the commission she deserved.

I feel this to my core. I was planning my wedding that was supposed to happen in June of 2019, and I bought a dress in 2018. When I found a dress I liked, I had a huge amount of pressure on me to purchase. My mom ended up buying the dress for me that day, and then a few months later, we found out we had to postpone our wedding. Now it’s 2020, I have a wedding dress, and I still haven’t had a real wedding (we got married at the courthouse with intentions of having a wedding later). Since then, I’ve realized that the $1000 wedding dress I got might not actually be the dress I really want, I’ve lost more than 40 pounds and am still losing weight, and I also don’t think my dress will be able to be altered as much as I needed. So while I feel like I could still be happy enough with my dress, I also feel like I cheated myself out of the experience to find the one that really makes me happy. And if I find that one, I feel like I cheated myself out of $1000 because I was rushed to make a decision.

My sister bought her wedding dress and picked her bridesmaid dresses from David’s Bridal. In the end everything worked out, my sister looked beautiful and the bridesmaids all looked great as well. However, the experience wasn’t the best. The experience of finding the dress for my sister was wonderful, the sales woman was so sweet, not pushy, and really listened to my sister and what she wanted without going over budget. Picking the bridesmaid dress was also really easy and an overall great experience. However, the ordering and alterations were a nightmare! My sister went for her first fitting and her dress was entirely lace. I realize lace can be challenging to hem and make it look right, but her hem was atrocious and so crooked you could see inches of the satin under skirt sticking out of the lace overlay at the bottom. Also, the buttons they had added for the bustle were shiny clear plastic things that were so noticeable. My sister was practically in tears and the tailor was not kind about the problem. Another woman came and talked to my sister and promised she would get things worked out and my sister requested to only see her from then on. After that, my sisters experience was fine, her dress got fixed and like I said before, looked beautiful. My dress on the other hand was not so easy to fix. I ordered my bridesmaid dress the same day my sister ordered her wedding dress. Almost a month later-I had gotten no contact and my sister was going in for that first fitting. I want along, hoping to ask about my dress and maybe get a fitting as well, I knew I’d need mine hemmed. We get there, my sister has her nightmare experience, and the staff tell me that they have no record of my order and do not have my dress. I produce the receipt and pick up form that was given to me when I ordered the dress. They apologize and order a new dress, no extra cost to me. I get an email about 3 weeks later that my dress has arrived. I go with my mom and sister to pick it up. I try it on and the top, which is lace, is stringy, and pilly, and looks like it has been brushed by a wire hairbrush. Also on top of that, the stay on the left side of the bodice is completely twisted and makes it look like I’m wearing a 40’s style bullet bra but only on one side. My mom and my sister tell them that this is not acceptable and I can’t wear this dress. There was also a black stain on the chiffon skirt near the bottom that looked like some had stepped on it. The staff says they’ll order me another new dress-this is the third time now-and will try to have it in before the wedding. The wedding was less than a month away. Finally, the third dress comes in, it looks great and I have it hemmed and ready about a week before the wedding. Everything ended up working out, however I don’t think that I will buy from that company again.

I had a first initial amazing experience but I had a feeling it was because I was the only bride in the store trying on dresses, but they did give me a little bit of a warning as far as how long it was going to take, but I found my dream dress and my heart was set so it wasn’t a large issue, I ordered my dress October 9 and they said it would come in December 31, however I got a call two weeks later that my dress was ready to be picked up. I was shocked but I went in to try it on and make sure all was well and there were a few other people in the store, that is when customer service flew out the window and a different associate than the first visit had the “get your crap and get out” kind of mentality and tone, (that visit completely ruined my mood for the day) when I just wanted to try it on quick. My dress and veil came in before my undergarments that I ordered by almost a month so that was also shocking. I would just recommend going in at a less busy time or day to get a good experience, as that is my experience and a few of my friends agree as well. Happy dress shopping!! It can be great in many places but it can also be awful in others. Loved this video!!!

I had two who were helping, they gave us two dresses, and then they left (literally went home). So I had to ask another consultant to help us and she made it so easy!! She filtered by color, size, and my date to show us which ones to try on! I am a little indifferent because I wish they would have done that for us the first time.

I used to work at Davids Bridal as a cashier and in receiving(never as a consultant). The reason the consultant quoted you so far out is because that's the time the computer provided to the consultant. For whatever reason the company always provides long lead times in store that aren't always accurate( I think the algorithm uses demand and forecast) and then it'll show up in store in a week. However there are certain colors or styles that really do take the full lead time (4,6,8,12 or 16 weeks) to come in. They are really just providing you the information they have at the time. A lot of the customer service experience depends on the store, the manager and each individual consultant some are pushier than other.

As a current consultant I feel like I should give some behind the scenes insight on why things went the way they went. 1) The commission policy is extremely strict. Bridal stylists have to sell at least $165/hour before they’re even eligible for commission. If they don’t hit that base goal they can get written up and if it happens enough they might even lose their job. Imagine being at the end of a long shift with a bunch of brides and bridesmaids who came into the store with no intention of buying, and now you’re below your goal and won’t make any commission on the sales that you did make. It can be extremely frustrating and some of the stylists are not always so great at hiding it. I’m guilty of it too sometimes. 2) Management also tracks conversion rates. Every single person that walks through the doors is assigned to a stylist, and if they don’t make the sale then it hurts their conversion. Like sales goals, you can get written up if your conversion is too low. 3) David’s will literally hire ANYBODY. It is as easy to get a job as a bridal stylist as it is to get any entry level retail job. The difference, as anybody who has been to a bridal store will know, is that bridal sales requires a very particular skill set and not everybody is very good at it. I work with some people who I know to be pushy and fear monger with brides, but it shows in their return/exchange rate. I also know a lot of people who genuinely want to make brides happy because it feels good to make connections and make someone’s day on a very important time in their life. Personally, I’d rather get a 5 star review that mentions me by name than the $10 commission I would get on a wedding dress anyway. Also, as a note to anybody who has read this long, PLEASE do not order online if you worked with a consultant for any length of time unless you genuinely hated working with them. In my experience, dresses come in at the same time whether they’re ordered online or in store (but we have to tell you the latest date it could come in so that you don’t get angry when it’s not here in a week). Also, if you order online and something goes wrong you can really only work with corporate customer service instead of speaking to a store manager who knows your situation and can more than likely help you more. The only difference is that if you order online that money goes to a million dollar corporation instead of somebody who spent time and energy trying to give you a good experience. Not everybody realizes how disheartening that can be. I had a bride order online in the store after I had spent an hour and a half dressing her from head to toe and giving her individualized attention. I thought we had gotten along great, but one of her friends told her that dresses come in faster if you order online, and she just genuinely didn’t think it would matter. In short, David’s Bridal is definitely not perfect and your experience is HIGHLY dependent on the stylist you work with.

I had a brides mom call to ask the size of the dress her daughter needed bc she was going to order it online after I had spent 3 hours with them (WG and BMs) and the only reason she ended up paying over the phone was bc my manager told her i wouldn't get the credit and they had loved working with me.

Ginger Grace I think people just genuinely don’t think about it! It’s so uncomfortable talking about commission because it makes me feel like I’m greedy and only in it for the money, but if a store is tracking the sales of one of their employees, those numbers on what they sell are the only black and white feedback managers get. A stylist could make every single one of their brides feel beautiful and and give them an amazing experience, but if they turn around and order online then management has no way of knowing that and the stylist looks like she’s terrible at her job.

I hated being clipped and pinned into a size 2 sample, knowing that I would need a 14 +. And my girls wanted to wear identical dresses but I needed standard size and plus size. I know David's bridals pricing probably comes with a steep caveat, but at the end of the day, it worked for me. I had a good experience overall and I love my dress and my girls dresses.

I agree with your customer service experience. I went to TWO different locations in texas. My experience as far as customer service, both ladies were pushy and asked THE QUESTION "Is this YOUR dress?" within minutes. The first location she brought the dresses and then was no where to be found for like 10mins. I had to get my sister to help me with the dresses, which was fine with me. The second location was not that great either! This lady asked me "Is this your dress", even before I was able to look in the mirror! If it wasnt for my nana telling me "be nice", I wouldve already switch associates. I ended up buying from them because the dress was AMAZING, less than my budget and they had the train that I thought I didn't want. lol I still dont like how pushy they are when its supposed to a special momment and the way they advertise how "the experience" in their stores are COMPLETELY different.

I went in with my bridesmaid, I didn't have an appointment (I honestly had no idea that I was supposed to, this was before I had internet), and I was rudely told that I was welcome to look through their dresses, but there was no one to help me and if I wanted to try any on, I would have to come back with an appointment. I think if I had been approached differently, I may have went back, but it was a rather negative interaction, and I never went to them. The only other interaction was when I was a bridesmaid a few years later, and it was a fine experience, because the dresses had already been picked and I just needed to try it on.

Your experience is this similar to what I have experienced, pushy to make a sale but I think they make commission so its understandable why, but may have more success with same day sales if they were more present and less pushy. Both times we went (different weddings) they also only gave us 1 change room for 5 of us even though we made an appointment and we had to share our sales person with another party that was shopping. One other down side was that they don't have enough sizes to handle busy times. I was happy that I went with a bunch of styles already picked so the sales person could go pull them because she was so busy that I don't know how long it would have take otherwise. With that being said we liked all the options and the price point and that they have lots of locations to suit the entire bridal party. Do your research before you go in for a smoother shopping experience.

I went to a David's Bridal once to look for formal dresses, they ended up handing over my name and phone number to the local Mary Kay rep (which I was totally NOT cool with) and she basically harassed me through text until I blocked her.

I was looking for this comment!! They give info to that predatory MLM company and the Mary Kay salesperson tells you that you've won a makeover or something.
