HONEST review of TRUSTED HOUSE SITTERS | Should you be a house sitter?

House sitting is where you look after some else's house and pets whilst they are away.
The ULTIMATE budget traveller dream is getting free accommodation around the world. I'd never heard of house sitting and then I came across it in a blog post and decided I would give it a try. I started from absolute scratch not knowing what to expect. This video talks about my first year as a house sitter and my honest review of Trusted House Sitters the website.

Hi fellow housesitter. Currently coming to the end of a 3 week sit in Copenhagen via trustedhouse sitters. I think the changes they've made recently removes some of the points you raised especially listings being paused once 5 sitters apply.

Did you choose where to travel based on where you got a gig? It seems difficult to line up the location, exact dates, etc if you choose a location first and then look for what gigs there are. Also do you find it to be very competitive?

Housesitting can be quite demanding. It depends on the host. If they have lots of pets its tiring, its more of a chore 😁 we had a host who demand to much like wanting us to let them know from time to time if there pets are okay… lol anyway, we have been living in a van and we just try housesitting if we like it. We did find some good hosts who does not demand a lot… to make the story short, just be mindful if they have lots of pets, dogs are really tiring you have to walk them and pick up their poop 😁 of course and they’re so needy… if we housesit again, we prefer just cats no dogs, chickens are fine as well…

You sound really lazy and sketchy. Sounds like your expectation is to do nothing while you get paid to stay in their home. If it’s a pain for you to send a simple text update to the owner of the pet, you’re just awful at the job you’re supposed to be doing.

But the owners can make it feel exhausting for no reason 😭😂 wanting EXACT details and this 1 in particular, if you don’t respond right then or didn’t take dog on walk at exact time, boom left a 3 star review despite thanking me and telling me the place was spotless in person like? Yeah it makes more sense to get paid for this, especially when there’s dogs involved. It’s convenient but tbh only enjoyable if the owner is chilled along with their pets

So it seems to vary wildly, but like are you able to go out and be a tourist at all? Like how many of these owners want you to just stay home and be there for their pets? Otherwise I guess it gives you a free place to sleep/shower for a couple days but I’d just stay at hostels so I am not tied down to such commitments.

  • @A-qe2eg

You should DEFINITELY get paid for it. Sure it could be a great experience but as I’ve just finished my first 2 house sits… it should definitely be something that’s rewarded, you’re caring for and walking pets, it’s not completely like a airbnb where you can actually do everything you want on your own time. Plus it depends on the owner. Some owners are just so anal about things and wants excessive updates and although you’re staying in their house.. you paid the same amount as them for the platform so you’re obviously genuine and in it for the love of pets… some owners can give such a weird vibe than what’s displayed on trusted sitters. This last one was a contrast, although I didn’t get to meet her, key was left in Dropbox, everything was explained once in the beginning and that’s IT. She left me free to my own devices and trusted my care with her dog and the difference was nice. I didn’t feel like I had to be on eggshells or anything, and she was very chilled and so was the sweet dog…. BUT still. 2-3 walks a day is lowkey labor for a pet that’s not yours. It should at LEAST be compensated because you’re spending all that time with the dog which is fine, but when you could be exploring more. It should at least be payed for so you don’t feel an uneven exchange of time and then you can use that to explore and recharge to walk the pets some more. Like it’s only common sense but those are the only downsides. It’s true the homes on there are very lovely, great places to stay and great locations. It’s a good opportunity to travel or just stay in a good place with pets.

Hi... I came across your videos yesterday and watched the one where you started your THS experience. I've been with them a year now, just about to do my 6th, a month in a beautiful hamlet in North Yorkshire and finish with a 3 week sit in Somerset area in November. This has been the best choice for me in a long time and I'm loving it. I've only done UK so but hoping to get to Portugal next spring as I'm really interested in exploring Portugal as a country. I'm 65 and found this to be a very safe and affordable way to travel. All my reviews have been 5* too and l get a lot of requests to sit too, mostly l have to decline as dates are not compatible. On the subject of notifications though, l still get an email whenever l receive a communication and once l am confirmed, their profile then says 'no longer in need of a sitter' so l would suggest, once someone books you, get them to confirm on the site, it then goes into 'upcoming sits' l'm going to watch your sits abroad now, see how they have gone ... Keep enjoying THS 💛

It is quite easy for them to accept you and once they say yes, then it goes ahead almost indefinitely. When you first set up an account I would say it takes some time to get your first house sitting. It personally took me a month or so, but I have known other people to get them in a few weeks. @@billybarber3438 It depends on the people, but usually they like to show you around before they leave so that you know where everything is. If this is not possible they may leave a key for you and give you instructions. The leaving process also depends on the people too but normally you just leave the key in the house and close the door behind you as they will have a spare key. The arriving and leaving processes are usually quite smooth sailing.

Firstly, pet owners pay very high costs for sitters in certain countries, especially those with experience or working for agencies (hiring a random person with no background check, ID check or reference is much more risky if they're being left alone in your home..) the fee that owners pay through the site is much lower which is why they have such high ratings, not everyone can afford to shell out AND go on holiday. Secondly, those who sit usually just love spending time with animals and travelling (free accommodation for us is more than enough, I work a full time job and am trying to save for a house while still visiting other countries, the global opportunity is brilliant) It may not be for you but there's plenty of benefits to others

Also keep in mind that a one off yearly payment offers pet owners UNLIMITED pet care throughout the year, and sitters basically have free (some even luxury) "AirBNBs" for even up to a month in a foreign country.
