a fabulous performance of a truly great modern cello concerto - a work that seems to have musical flavours that at times remind one of Elgar's Cello Concerto, Haydn (Cello Concerto No 1), Ravel, Poulenc, American Spirituals, Piazolla, and Shostakovich (who greatly admired and met Honegger when Shostakovich was a student in the St Petersberg Conservatory and who later transcribed AH's entire Symphony No 3 for 2 pianos).
This is wonderful - thank you!
This is a great piece, which should be performed more. Really nice concert all around and the usual fine audio/video work. Thank you for sharing this.
Honegger is an elusive composer. Anyway, this cello concerto is quite a gem.
A great performance. In spite of the lyrical beginning this piece really needs a determined soloist who is prepared to add a bit of umph.
Quelle belle interprétation de cette œuvre tout en contraste d'Honegger. Merci
masterpiece
Nice work! Wonderful performance!
The key is C Major. Complete movement information is as follows: I. Andante II. Lento - Cadenza III. Allegro marcato - Lento - Presto

I'm a fan of French classical music in the 20th century, and just starting to explore Honegger beyond his symphonies. This is just wonderful!

Honegger is Swiss, yet part of Les Six. Great idea to explore more Honegger, you will not be disappointed. I too am a great lover of 20th Century French music. What a great period of Classical music. Keep listening my friend.

Albert Roussel highly recommended. He’s probably the most unsung of the great 20th century French composers. “The Spider’s feast” is an excellent starting point.

You should give a listen to the symphonies of Charles Tournemire! One of France's most accomplished symphonists, yet only his works for the organ are remembered today. Here's his sixth symphony: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fZNmtpmKh5irmrQ.html
Where did this second movement cadenza come from? I haven't heard it before, it's a nice summation of all the themes. One of my favorite concertos

Could be Maurice Gendron, or Maurice Maréchal.
I was anxious to hear Honegger's 'Cello Concerto, but now I believe it's one of his lesser works. After its admittedly beautiful opening pages, it didn't leave much of an impression, either as music or as an effective vehicle for the soloist. Maybe it's a work that needs to be heard several times to be properly appreciated.

Well, I was of the same opinion at first - now, after 4 repeats, I'm finding it more absorbing each time, and the recap of the first theme after the storm at 17:40 is breath catching.
Einfach wunderbar!
Sort of a Concerto Grosso. I think prolly without the solo bow would’ve been better. That’s the way I did it in Vienna in the late 80s. Great piece, tho. Wish I’d written it.
In Honegger's throughput, most of compositions are rather dark and pessimistic, a few others are lighter. All of them are strictly built? Thr cello concerto is a part of the latter. The music reaches here some kind of transparency.
This could have been such a great concerto. Starts so beautifully….but the inspiration leaves quickly…so regrettable..l but I love this first movement. So well played.
