    Love my Talon X with Shock Therapy spring kit in West Virginia. Only thing I disagree with is the assessment that the Talon X is a "trail" model comparable to the RZR 900 or 1000 S. It's way beyond those machines. To compare to the Polaris product, I think it's more in the category of the RZR XP 1000 at 64" wide and trailing arm rear suspension.

    I’m really curious to hear your impressions of the Talon X after you’ve driven it! You currently have my shocks and springs at your shop waiting for the full Monty Ride Improvement System treatment and I can’t wait to get them back and on the machine! I do 90% rough and rocky trail riding and I found the X suspension to be way to stiff in those conditions. So stiff in fact after the first ride in the Talon my wife announced she’d much rather ride in our 50” RZR 900 Trail with its 10” of suspension travel and factory shocks... that’s not a compliment to the RZR! Any level of speed through a whoop section resulted in neck snapping, rear bucking, out of control white knuckle, hang on driving, and slow speed trail riding over cobbled rock would jar your teeth loose. Not fun! I’m sure hoping that what I get back from Shock Therapy is a whole new level of control and comfort for an otherwise great machine.

    Pretty hard to beat Honda reliability. I’ve only had my talon for a year but have had Honda ATVs we’ve beat the hell out of and they’re still running top notch. One sat in a slew in a cow pasture for 6 months after it fell through the ice. Changed the oil and it was back on the road the next summer. Honda’s are damn tough!

    Awesome review , been doing a lot of research on what SXS to buy, Then BOOM Honda comes to the table. I always been a person to never buy the first year of any new product. I'm currently looking at the Honda 1000x-4 fox live valve. I'm hoping that 2021 model is based on the 1000r. I talked to Jackson Racing as of Jan.2, 2020 the 1st shipments of Factory approved Turbo Kits are going out Friday Jan, 31 2020. They are just under 6K. My Question with the live valve shock set up. Are you working on a mod for this shock setup.

    What are your thoughts on the Talon 4 and putting 32's on it? Or should I just but a Polaris Turbo S and get one factory set up for 32's? I was just not sure how the Turbo S would do for just trail riding. Is the ride decent if it is not used for jumping and racing on the Talon 4? If not, do you think your spring kit would work? I'm looking for a trail buggy with the family.

  • @ShockTherapyllc

    @ShockTherapyllc

    3 жыл бұрын

    Tough one. We run 32's and now 33's on our Talon with zero issues accept we have finally worn out a CV. 3500 miles on it. The ride quality on a Talon is rough and stiff. Even in the electronic shocks. This would be my concern with trail riding. Not plush enough. The Turbo S is plush and would work killer for the trials accept for width. So if you don't have any width restricted trails in your area the Turbo S would work great. It trail rides just fine.

    Curious what you think about the fox live valve suspension on the talon 1000x-4

  • @ShockTherapyllc

    @ShockTherapyllc

    4 жыл бұрын

    Ven Kobby the live valve is great and better than the dynamix system as far as ECM speed goes but it still has the bad rear geometry of the Honda to overcome. It is stiff and bucks just like the two seaters. After it is played with and tuned it rides 100% better and is quite nice but is not going to be as nice as the same system on a Polaris strictly due to rear suspension design.

    I appreciate all you said about this Honda talon, but you didn't say anything about the center located speedometer etc. which is not where it should be!(in FRONT of the DRIVER) You also didn't say anything about the small storage area's,or the fact that ALL of their accessories are 3 times higher in cost than any others. And what about the fact that the air box intake is in the rear wheel well, where it sucks in dirt like crazy, and requires you to change the air filter more quickly than other machines in the same class. Just a few thoughts!

  • @650ic6

    @650ic6

    2 жыл бұрын

    Your only valid complaint is the air intake/filter issue. The speedometer takes a second to dart your eyes over to read it. The accessories don’t cost three times more than other manufacturers. I installed a particle separator and now the dirty stock filter issue is eliminated.

    @@650ic6 My son-in-law has the 2019 Talon X, and we installed a winch (after market) as the Factory one was over $1,200.00! He also installed the S&B Particle separator. I have nothing BAD to say about how it runs and drives, but don't like the factory accessories, as they are much higher in cost than my CanaAM.

    3:30 Is this a marketing plug? An open diff with brakes has no where near the same capability a locked front end has. With a locker, torque flows dynamically between the wheels based of traction. No wheel will slip unless both have too much power. On the ground, the honda has no real way of measuring which wheel to brake without one slipping, so it's reactive vs the natural torque flow of a locker. With a fully locked drive line all drive torque can "theoretically" be driven through any one wheel at any given time. If these systems were anywhere near as capable, then manufacturers like Jeep, Hummer, Chevy, Ford, Toyota, LR, and more wouldn't even use lockers and other advanced traction devices. Why wouldn't Honda just use an open rear diff with traction control as well? Heck, why not use 3 open diffs to give it the best turning performance? . At speed, sure it's fine and better for handling. On slow trails you can, and will, lose huge amounts of torque transfer because the front end loses traction on one wheel causing the whole differential to lose torque... since open diffs send torque 50/50, the wheel with the least traction limits the one with the most traction to its torque level. With crawling, weight transfer makes traction loads far more uneven which further exacerbates this. ie, if one wheel has 10 ft lbs and the other has 100, then they both get 10 ft lbs for total of 20. With a locker it can handle 110ft lbs before spinning sending 10 to one wheel and 100 to the other. A brake based system would have to guess the correct brake pressure to even get both wheels to have anywhere near that. ie, if the system brakes the 10 ft lbs wheel with 60ft lbs of force then it gets 70 driven to both hubs but 80 to the ground. And if the brake system over brakes the wheel it will hurt momentum. ie, brakes 150 ft lbs of force would lock up the 10ft lbs wheel completely and restricting the vehicle's acceleration. . Maybe if honda used a helical diff that has proportional lock up to the torque flowing through it, but an open diff with brake based traction control is not in the same league as a locked differential. It's not best of both worlds. Subaru's DCCD diff is probably the closest thing. Helical differential with electromagnetic clutch to quickly change its lock-up and can do so without impeding momentum through the use of brakes.
