I seem to remember suppliers dropping out in droves before major recessions. They see it coming. Toyota was late on the hammer drop. Renault wasn't. Ford wasn't. Honda wasn't last time. The American auto market is what drives manufactures to compete. Renault had the EU market cornered. Honda is an American manufacture when it comes to $$$$$. The American market is collapsing.

Crap I am with you on the proposal of exotic fuels. Have you ever been to an F1 race in the early 90s when they were running supreme fuels. You could actually smell the difference in cars as they went by. That was when F1 live was a sensation for the eyes, ears, and nose. How I miss those days. The Ferrari 412T2 OMG. You could actually feel it coming up the straight in Montreal vibrating your seat. Every time all four wheels ran over the asphalt crack repair tar, it made this sound. It wasn't a thud! thud!. It was SNAP! I remember all the senses as if I were blind and had all of my other senses strengthened acutely. What I would give to watch them again. They run at Mosport and Spa from time to time. I think I'm taking a trip.

I mean they behaved nasty with the french manufacturer and Verstappen was vocal everytime he had a broken PU but everyone knew why he was so open aggressive ... he was being used by Marko to burn bridges with Renault ...knowing that they had Honda up their sleeves........Now Honda left and they are out in the cold with no plan B ...unless FIA forces Renault to provide a PU to RB....that will be interesting and also hilarious ha ha ha ... And..while all this shit is happening arrogant Max is waiting for being WDC and break some records ...Sorry Max you are fucked at the moment (don even dream about making a phone call to John Camillieri.....he has also shut Ferrari's doors to you after you ...openly called them cheaters....you were right mate..... but also you must learn to be more cautious when opening your fucking mouth :)

Dutchman here. As to Verstappen, well he tends to say a lot more to Dutch media than English speaking media. I suspect he harbours some distrust against the English speaking media and I can't blame him. Now Dutch coverage often is absolutely terrible, but we do get some additional things out of him. What really seems to have bugged him about Renault and what he likes about Honda are the details. Verstappen instantly notices small errors in engine mappings and he doesn't like it at all. The Renault seems to have had a lot of those issues over the years. One of the first ways he described the Honda was more along the lines of the 2015 Ferrari he used for a few races in Toro Rosso. Quite simply smoother. Now Honda does have mapping issues on Friday, manly a small delay between applying throttle and pick up of that command, but Honda usually fixes it by Saturday. If not, well you will hear it on the radio during the race. He is not happy, even if it costs him just 0,1s a lap. Another thing he likes is the technical quality of the Honda PU's. They come pre assembled, nicely packaged etc and he likes that. The Renault's usually came in parts to be assembled at the track and stuff just went wrong. Once Horner actually had to carry an additional MGU-K in his luggage on the plane, another time they got a brand new PU which turned out to have a broken crankshaft right out of the factory etc. Max doesn't really have that much of a poker face, and when he talks about these things, it is very clear what he thinks. I doubt he wants to go back to Renault. I suspect moves might already being made. Verstappen has his own management structure unlike other Red Bull drivers. His dad plays "bad cop", Max usually plays "good cop" and in the background you have his manager, Raymond Vermeulen who does the business dealing in the background, but in the end Max has full control. It is known that Jos Verstappen cultivates a relation with Toto Wolff and it seems he also has been doing that with the new Daimler CEO Ola Källenius. I have no clue who Vermeulen talks to and that is probably for a reason. Max, well he had the choice between Red Bull and Mercedes back in 2014 and choose Red Bull because Marko offered him that Toro Rosso seat, but I can't remember a single instance where Max did anything to not keep his options with Mercedes open. On the flip side, Toto Wolff also still wants him and seems to see in him the perfect replacement for Hamilton. If Mercedes commits fully to beyond 2021 with maximum allowed resources, I kinda see Verstappen replacing Hamilton. Now Verstappen does feel very comfortable in the team, but without an competitive engine, I think he will have to leave. Red Bull will have to offer something special to keep him around, and if they do, I suspect he will stay. That would be securing a Mercedes PU deal or taking over the Honda PU. The second option might be possible seeing as Mario Illien has been heavily linked to Red Bull and Andy Cowell is also on the market and he turned Ferrari down. On top of that the development restrictions might make it financially feasible if the staring package of 2021 is good enough. Honda said that they will still invest in making the 2021 PU good.

My other alternative scenario is exactly what mclaren did with Porsche. They could even tag badge the Honda and kick them the cash with out the risk. Red Bull have committed to the sport. And the team isn’t the same without max. I totally can see what you’re saying about Dutch media. They are going to have to break him off something nice. I also could see a Merc engine happening on the deal that max stays I think Merc has enough belief in Hamilton to win next year and if he does he may retire. A Red Bull chassis with a Merc engine without Hamilton plus AC and AN on the technical side , honestly, I take the Red Bull. All interesting scenarios! Thank you for all that awesome info, Daniël!

Toto Wolff have in more then one occasion said they will not supply Red Bull with engines, both because they don’t want to supply a direct competitor for the championship and they also claim that supplying another team would give them capacity issues. Not supplying them with an engine also make it a little more plausible for Max to join Mercedes. All of this together with the fact that Cyril at Renault was quoted that Red Bull had not contacted them makes me think they are seriously thinking of taking over the development of the Honda engine with Mugen.

It's fascinating to come to this video after the recent news that Red Bull seem to be buying the Honda facilities and essentially becoming their own PU supplier. Granted, this was mostly influenced by the securing of an engine freeze to 2025, which itself was mainly triggered by Honda leaving, but it's still interesting to see the twists and turns that come with this sport, and that sometimes the least likely option is what actually ends up happening.

F1 really needs to make it easier for new manufacturers to come into the sport. If it can't do this, then the sport will not be sustainable. The cost cap is a really good step in the right direction, but the new engine regulations in 2025 will be huge. If they get in perfect, F1 will have new life, will remain the pinnacle and be able to attract new manufacturers like Audi or Porsche. If they don't get it right, that may be the nail in the coffin and one of their few manufacturers may want to leave, and the sport is unlikely to survive with two manufacturers.

Great video. Japanese friend of my commented to me that “everyone knew” Honda was going to pull out, which left me a bit perplexed given it seemed a surprise to most western media. The 2050 carbon neutrality is a face saving excuse for the failure of their program. In the video you rightly say that Honda has done relatively well, which I agree with, but as a corporate strategy, it’s been a huge waste of money given the modest PR gains and the low transferability of the tech into production cars.

My opinion is it costs to much money and probably doesn't help there on road car programs. If there staying in indy kinda says something. Even though indy is under Honda America and F1 is under Japan. I'll probably get bashed but the F1 engine is to advanced for anyone to want to make a investment in it. (Manufacturers) F1 is probably the only motor sport that you probably couldn't build a engine in your garage. It's kinda sad that F1 is so determined by the engine most of the time. Besides drag racing most other motor sports engines are basically the same power.

I think if F1 wants to be more sustainable they need to make the engines simpler and start with making sustainable fuels. I think ultimately simpler (cheaper) engines with the addition of new fuels would be way more interesting for more automotive companies even in the VW group.

Let's just say I saw Nelson Piquet win the 1st turbo championship (1983 Brabham BMW. 1500bhp baby). So I have seen the pundits come and go. Stick around Cranky, you are an asset to the F1 world. Seems to me that an Cowell route forward with RBR producing it's own mugen rebranded unit for 2022 is most likely. The question at hand, will Merc and Ferarri adopt the no development strategy after 2022? That seems unlikely. Unless RBR is able to pull VW or BMW in, the future is worrisome for them atm.

But I sleep like a baby at night haha Case and point will be tomorrow’s video. Yeah I totally underestimated the mugen badge. It seemed all the revenue issues would translate to that program too but I guess I overlooked that Red Bull could overcompensate with a giant check. Kinda like saying he has no intention or interest with Verstappen bc he just made a public comment about it haha. ⁣ ⁣ And Cyril commented on it as I literally quoted. Not to mention I showed You the actual regulation that they don’t have a choice regardless if Red Bull don’t secure power. And even made it available for you. What more can I do haha⁣ ⁣ There’s is ZERO chance a totally new supplier enters. That much is evident. They COULD buy operations I suppose but that’s not a new supplier at all. I think the main aspect that divides F1 from other (fossil-based) motorsports is development vs. marketing. Indycar and others don't require aggressive development with all costs that brings, while F1 does. Hence, their statement is consistent: they don't want to pour money into developing an F1 engine. But they can still remain in indy for marketing purposes.

when these engines were introduced, every formula1 fan thought there could be more engine suppliers but these engines are too big investment for the companies and these engines have low potential in road car side or any other potential out side of formula1. There should be some serious changes in engine regulations and fuel used for the powering engines. The point of being involved in motorsport is to develop tech that makes it into consumer cars. The more advanced the tech the further out it is before it that tech finds its way to application. Most other motorsport may have 3-5 year lead time, Indy may have 10-12, but F1 being most advanced likely takes 15+ years. Well in 15+ years Honda may not need that ICE tech as they switch to carbon neutral.

One thing this saga has shown us, is how much denial most F1 fans are about F1's health. How little they know about the workings of F1. And how little they know about the automotive industry and it's future. Two examples from this very video. A lot of Honda's racing involvement including its Indy car program are from a separate division to it's F1 program. And signing the concord agreement is not a commitment to stay within the sport.

  • @CYMotorsport

I hate comments like this. Bc you lack the self awareness to even entertain how you could be wrong. I guess bc you thought no one would fact check you but I’ll discourage that thinking with a straight forward reply:⁣ ⁣ 1. No one is confused Honda’s internal org that handles Indy is not the same internal org that handles F1. If that confused you then you’d have to think f1 is Indy. That’s like thinking Nike running shoes and Nike cleats are the same thing run by the same teams with the same objectives. Have you met someone that thinks this? ⁣ ⁣ That wasn’t even the close to the point that was made in the video . But that was so obvious you either weren’t paying attention or went out of your way to mess that up. ⁣ ⁣ 2. There’s literally so many things wrong with your second point but again you said it in a way that showed you had no interest in learning why so I’ll have to go over the top of your wishes here solely to genuinely help spread real info in case ppl read your comment. ⁣ ⁣ 𝗘𝗡𝗚𝗜𝗡𝗘 𝗦𝗨𝗣𝗣𝗟𝗜𝗘𝗥𝗦 𝗗𝗢𝗡𝗧 𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗡 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗖𝗢𝗥𝗗𝗘 𝗔𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗦.⁣ ⁣ I don’t want anyone on my channel making this error. Honda supplies power. They are not subject to FOM agreements. So the premise of your entire point is wildly wrong. If you sign a Concorde agreement, you’re 100% legally bound to it. Literally the most iron clad agreement you can think of. But again, Honda was not apart of this. Red Bull are. Hence their commitment. Their only exit clause would be under extenuating circumstances that are identified. We’ve had one major Concorde leak snd the rest are under tight seal. The teams did have cover in the leak 1997 Concorde but again, it wasn’t easy and certainly would never be pursued haphazardly. ⁣ ⁣ So the lesson is, if you want to condescend, be right. And if you’re not right, be open to being wrong. 𝙉𝙀𝙑𝙀𝙍 be wrong 𝘼𝙉𝘿 not open to learning. It’s ironic you talk about denial and how lack of knowledge is widespread when you yourself overtly and by any generous measure displayed copious amounts of both.

Not a popular opinon but I think by the time Lewis will retire, The young drivers will have secured better seats and will deny Verstappen a title. Hi choice for 2021 is crucial because he's choosing the team which could have the best shot at his title, but with the likes of Leclerc, Sainz, Gasly etc. on the grid, I think there's a genuine chance he never becomes champion, even though he's crazy fast.
