Honda Odyssey Sliding Door Won't Close - Fix
Odyssey's have a history of losing a bumper that fits in between the sliding door and the door rail stop. The bumper gets old and brittle and eventually falls out. When it does, the sliding door goes back to far and won't close using the door handles. It's a simple fix and I show you how to get it working again. I do the repair on my 2004 Odyssey, but this is applicable for 1999-2011 models. I've linked below where I purchased my replacement bumpers. If you have questions or comments, leave them below and I'll do my best to respond.

Connie Herrin Bolding , if you’re not able to get a jump start, I’d suggest closing the door manually. It will close if you pull on it really hard. Not something you want to do all the time, but given your circumstances it’s your best option.

jim bones, did you set your doors to manual because they won't open with power? @Andrew Dancer, sorry man. I've never run into that problem.
There are about 30 things that can go wrong with these doors. I've got an 07, and the exterior door handle broke so it couldn't pull its cable, and the plastic around the rear latch disintegrated, so the latch motor could no longer pull the door all the way shut. Other problems that can happen are the fuses, rollers falling apart, the computer losing track of what state the latch is in, the switches inside the actuator assemblies, the brackets for the assemblies getting warped so the moving parts won't move, the moving parts needing lubrication, the cables falling out of their housing, and on and on. Everybody on youtube has their own "How to Fix our Odyssey Sliding Door" video. Doors were great for a little while, but now mine are making me miss my childhood VW Vanagon, where you have to shout "hands and feet inside!" before slamming it shut.

Hi Jeff just found your video. my 2007 honda odessey touring van , both sliding passenger doors do not have the rubber stopper part. I only can see the metal part wear the rubber part actually goes on. The drivers side has never had an issue closing, but the passenger side sliding door is hit and miss. When it doesn't close, it sticks about half way then opens again. If I pull the bottom end of the door panel outwards, pull handle to close, then it closes..This only happens when I try to close the door. Opens fine. The drivers side open and closes fine. Any suggestions would be great. Thank you
@DIYJeff
10 ай бұрын
@knstx…. Okay, so you have a lot going on there. None of those issues are caused by the missing rubber part. The only symptom of the missing part is if your door doesn’t make any movement at all when it’s fully open and you try to close it. Since it will close part way, and all the way if you pull on the door panel, then it could either be that the track for the door slide has maybe bent or there could be a slight issue with the door motor. Ive not heard of this exact symptom so I can’t say for sure.

My door is missing this piece. It won't close at all from the outside. It will only close partway from the inside or the driver's panel...any suggestions on how to close my door and keep it from running down the battery until I can get the part and get it put on?
@DIYJeff
Жыл бұрын
@Adrienne Everitt, while this missing piece will certainly help your door close with the drivers door switch or the inside handle if it just won't close without some help, it sounds like what you are experiencing won't be fixed with this rubber stopper. It sounds like you have something in the door track that is stopping it from closing. I would suggest inspecting your door track and cleaning it thoroughly.
What does it mean if the door doesn't close a the way it just keeps bouncing open so you have to hit it shut?
@DIYJeff

Honestly not sure, but it sounds like there is something down in the roll track that obstructing it.
Hey Jeff so I had to drive my van with the door open. I swapped the fuse in the hood (followed utube video) but my husband claims it’s in the inside panel so he swapped as well. The part that you mentioned IS missing however in your video you mentioned you are able to close with the toggle button on the front panel. My door does not close anyway you try it. It won’t budge. MEs no sounds whatsoever as if they is no electric going to it. It is however missing that stopper. On the other side it has the stopper but it is slightly melted or soft rubber. Is there a sensor that knows it’s there? Because I don’t see how that rubber stopper is going ti make a difference. Seems like the motor went if one exists on the door panel. Help Jeff!!
@DIYJeff
2 жыл бұрын
@Frances Greene, there is no sensor if the stopper is missing. The stopper isn't your problem on it not wanting to budge. It's sounds like it's the door motor to me. Or there may be an actuator that engages the motor, but not sure about that. My guess would be the motor.

Are you missing the rubber stopper? Without the rubber stopper the door goes to far and then won't close electronically. Another common problem that happens is sometimes the door doesn't go back far enough to hit the rubber stopper and you have to push it about 1/2" backwards, then it will work electronically. This happens about 1 out of 10 times on my van. Hope this info helps.

@31spa, I’m sorry you have experienced such poor customer service. Not all dealers are this way but many are. The rubber stopper mentioned in my video has no bearing on your issue before or after your experience. If it’s not locking and the lights stay on, common sense says when the door closes it’s either not making good contact with the door pin, or it could be that the door pin itself has gone bad. If the vehicle has never been in an accident, a body shop isn’t your solution. If it has had an accident, it’s possible the door is not aligned properly with the frame.

leosrule726, it sounds like you just need to do a reset. One way would be to disconnect both the positive and negative battery cables. Then reconnect the positive cable first, then the negative. Another way to reset it is to turn the ignition on, then turn the power door switch master to the left of the steering wheel to off and then on. Then press and hold both power door buttons closed at the same time until they close completely. If that still doesn’t work then turn the main switch from off to on again. AnnaLUVsBOBMARLEY , check the sliding door track at the bottom and make sure there’s no debris that is stopping it from going all the way back. Another problem these doors experience is not going back all the way, which then prohibits the door from allowing the latch to engage to close it. With the door open try pushing the door back and see if it has any give. Sometimes by pushing it back a quarter inch it allows the door handle to work.

@@DIYJeff I also notice it would do that when parked next to other cars in a parking lot or when parked too close to the curb. I literally have to drive away from the other parked car or the curb to get it to close. Lol it’s weird

@@layah28, I have never heard of that problem before. Sounds like it could be the sensor that senses if the door has resistance (beeps, and reopens) could be bad.
for me the door doesnt not close at all, no beep from it or anything, 2007 odyssey
I did this, didn’t work. Mine opens and then when it closes it closes and bounces right back open. Any suggestions

Kim Skeels , prior to putting in the new rubber pieces, how did the door react? Would it open and not close?

DIY Jeff it will open and close but will not latch when it closes. So it opens right back up

DIY Jeff So I was praying this was the fix but not the case

Kim Skeels , have you tried cleaning the metal contacts on the inside of the door frame and the door itself? Use an eraser and scrub them. If they get dirty the door and the frame don’t make electrical contact and won’t latch.

Kim Skeels , if that doesn’t work, find fuse #13 (4th in on top) on the inside passenger front kick panel. I think it is listed as "Clock Reset" and is a 7.5 amp fuse. Remove it for 30 seconds and then replace it. Open the passenger side door and then the driver side. This fix has been reported as working for some people. But clean those contacts first.
Got mine from pick a part for free

Chris shank , that’s awesome!
It's annoying that I have to start up the video to know what model year you're covering.
DIDNT WORK Thanks BFF☹️☹️
Does anyone else want to know what's up with the orange wrist band? Not relevant, I know.... But...

Tiffany Drenth, great question about the wrist band. I had forgot to cut it off before the video. Just a couple days before filming the video I had race Ironman 70.3 Raleigh (Triathlon). I guess you could say the wrist band was a bit of bragging rights, but unrelated to the video or viewers of course :)
Anyone know what to do if the button inside the van won't close the door either? My door is completely stuck. Happy Mother's day to me! Haha! Help!
I was told by my Honda dealer that it was the door actuators and that they were causing a parasitic draw. That's the reason why by battery was dying. Have you heard of that at all, Jeff?

If you are having a problem with your battery dying and it's a good battery, then it's highly likely you have a parasitic draw. It's highly unlikely, but it is probable, that it could be one of your door lock actuators. I'm not sure though how you can easily test that.

@@DIYJeff Thank you. That’s what the dealer told me. Yes - I have a parasitic draw but they couldn’t detect where it was coming from. After all the tests, they narrowed it down to the doors. I don’t know what they’re called, but the black connectors on the inside of the doors that connect to the frame near the front doors with all those silver pegs on them, look pretty worn out. Not sure what they actually do.
Wrong problem for me - the door will close 95% of the way, but won’t completely latch shut. Happens in the cold.
you should move your arms more Jeff
