I've had to jump start my Honda Odyssey about three times in the past couple of weeks. And sometimes it seems like there's a little hesitation and not enough power to start the engine. It's usually at this is the point when I decide it's time to change the battery. And in this video I'll show you step-by-step in my 2004 Honda Odyssey. But definitely stay till the end because there are 2 things you still need to do after the battery is replaced.
So here with the battery I'll need to disconnect the positive and the negative terminals. A socket wrench works well with this job and on this Odyssey a 10mm socket will work for everything. And typically you should always remove the negative cable first. When everything is disconnected, the battery can be lifted out. If you've never done this before just be aware that a car battery is pretty heavy and you should use two hands to pull it out. I had to push a few cables out of the way but otherwise it should lift straight out.
The best place to get a new battery is at the autoparts store to recycle the core and buy a new battery. But before installing the new battery, I suggest using a wire scrubber or sandpaper to clear away any corrosion on the insides of both battery clamps. This will help ensure that the cables have good contact. The guy at AutoZone also recommended using some battery grease but I've actually never used that in any car I've owned so I didn't buy any.
When the clamps are clean slip the battery back into the engine bay and connect the j-bars and battery clamp. Make sure it's tight and that the battery can't move around. Now remove the plastic cap on the positive battery terminal and slide the corresponding power cable over it. When reinstalling always connect the positive cable first. Now just tighten the battery clamp and check to see that it won't slide off. Once that's done connect the negative battery cable to the negative terminal. Don't be alarmed if you see a small spark when it makes contact with the battery. That's pretty normal, but try to do it in one motion to reduce the sparking.
After the battery connections are complete there are two things I still need to do in this Honda and pretty much any Honda after having a dead battery or replacing a battery. So my van now starts up with no problem but when I turn on the radio, it asks me for a code. This is the anti-theft code and you can find it in your owner's manual or on a sticker attached to the glove box. This is usually a 5-digit code. So just use the radio preset buttons to unlock the radio.
The second thing you will eventually notice is that the automatic function on the driver's side power window won't work. If I push it down all the way, it only rolls down while I push the button. To fix this, have the engine running with the driver's window fully closed. Now press and hold the Auto button until the window is all the way down. Then pull up and hold the Auto button until the window is fully closed. At this point the driver's side window will be reset and will work automatically again. You installed the metal battery clamp on top backwards. There are even the letters "FR" and an arrow showing the correct orientation. The crossbar of the clamp will lay directly between the two battery caps when oriented correctly.

I reinstalled the battery tie down the same way I found it. Do you mean the back end should be in the front? I’m gonna check it next time I pop the hood.

Quick question, our 2004 Honda Odyssey was bought used. I don't believe we have the owners manual. Can you advise me on how I am able to obtain the anti-theft code to reset the radio. Theres actually a lot of features, one being navigation that we were not able to use prior to needing a new battery. However since you made mention of it. I figured I'd ask. Thank you. And thanks for the detailed instructional video 😊😊

It should be in the glove compartment. Just open it and look on the inside of the glove compartment door

I have this car but the last idiot to put in the battery installed it all wrong so the battery leaked + the bolts were facing in a way that makes it DIFFERENT from this video despite it being the 2004 odyssey like this one. Example: i had to crank clockwise (right) to remove the negative side nut and it was facing the driver side (right side of front view). The positive nut is facing front toward me and i cant even grab it with the ratchet 😠
