Very helpful. I am seriously considering buying this model bike, and the ease of checking the valve clearance is actually a strong selling point. I've done the adjustment on a shim under bucket type once, and I would not do that again. I was in over my head. Thanks for posting! 😊

Thank you for the great video. I note though that the manual says to align the mark on the Cam sprocket with the top mark on the cylinder head. The correct mark for #2 cylinder is the one on the left out of the pair. Thanks again!

I'm in the Austin area, so it's worth noting that all I can get here is E10 fuel -- figure a slight increase if I was able to find ethanol-free. Loved my Bandit, it was a terrific bike. Put about 60k miles on it and thought it was time to move on, made a great light tourer with hard cases and better screen. The 1250 engine is a monster, great stuff.

Took me about 3 hours to do it taking breaks and taking time filming. You could do it in a couple hours pretty easily if you worked quickly and knew what you were doing. My lifetime fuel avg is 64.4 MPG over 14,000 miles -- I log all of my results on the Fuelly site, fuelly/driver/treybrad/nc700x (can't link directly in YT comments)

Thanks for Vid, it's very helpful to adjust the valves. But are you sure, that the 1.Cyl placed on Clutch side and the 2.Cyl. on Brake side? By my NC, it was exactly vise versa!

Yep, like Victor said, 8k miles is the spec. This is the second NC I've checked. I checked my bike at 10k miles and the intake valves were good, but the exhaust valves were all a little tight. The bike in the video is a friends, this was his first check at ~12k, and all of his were right in spec, dead in the middle. So... take that for whatever it's worth.

Heads up the 2013 NC700x radiator is connected differently and is a giant pain in the was.

Even though it's just for screw clamps on this video, I'd suggest getting a JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) screwdriver and to not (ever) use a Phillips on a metric bike. Phillips "cam out" by design, JIS drivers do not. My 2 cents. Thanks for taking the time to make the video!

The next time you wear out a set of tires, I would love to see a front wheel / rear wheel removal / re-installation video(s). Very well done and helpful.

That looks so much easier than my NT700V, where you have to lift the gas tank, remove the airbox, remove the intake snorkels, and then work the valve covers out around the frame tubes. I love my NT but I'm seriously considering one of the NC's as my next bike. As far as valves go, I checked my NT's at 1500 miles, 8k, and then didn't touch them until 26k as they never moved on the first two checks. Still no adjustments at 26k. It's a Honda, you can't go wrong.

What size feeler gauge for top and bottom did you use I have a ctx 700DCT but calls same adjustment

Definitely one of the better bike for valve adjustment with only having to remove the rad. Bikes like the Vstrom must be a nightmare to do.

I imagine the process for a 2014 NC 750 x would be much the same. *none i've talked to in the community so far know how to get hold of a service manual for the model * ps. nice shooting style :)

DEPENDS on how you ride. If you ride easy and never go above 5k you shouldn't have to adjust but every 25k miles. If you ride hard you need to check every 15k. One good thing about this bike if you have factory muffler still, is you can easily hear when they start to travel.

There was a little oil around the centre of the rockers when the cover was removed. I wonder if this is normal - anyone know?

how many miles before you have to do a valve adjustment on the NC700x?

Most likely around 10-12 nm. Just done up by hand. Those bolts don’t have a lot of torque on them :)

does anybody know of a trick where you don't have to drain the radiator to get to the valves. When I tried, I wasn't able to move the radiator far enough out of the way

Hi treybrad , firstly I would like to thank you for creating such an informative video. I was following your instructions as well as the service manual's, but I encountered a difficulty in opening the camshaft maintenance cap. What size wrench were you using? 14 was too loose while 13 could barely fit. Also, my cap wouldn't budge and forcing either wrench is slowly wearing up the hex . Ended up checking the alignment from the gap near the tensioner. Any advice? Also, when I first opened up the cylinder head cover to do the clearance at 20,000km mileage, I found out that that the stock clearance was too tight that i couldn't even fit in my 0.13mm feeler gauge. Same goes for the exhaust. Adjusted to 0.17mm and 0.28mm respectively (as according to manual), and the tapping sound was abnormally LOUD. Proceeded to adjust them to 0.15mm and 0.26mm thereafter, sound was lesser, but it was still much noisier than initial. Did you encounter the same situation? Should I be worried? Thanks in advance,

I attempted the a valve clearance check for the first time last night and ran into a similar problem with the gaps. When I checked the gaps the smallest gauge in my set wouldn't fit behind any of the tappets. there was essentially no gap. I adjusted it to .17mm and .28mm, but when I got it all together there was a consistent tapping noise that wasn't there before. I'm also curious if this is a concern. Any insight would be appreciated.

I had issues with the camshaft marking because my service manual clearly states the cylinder marking should be at the top but if I do this the motor runs very loud. This required a lot of turns on the valve screw to fit a feeler gauge in (alarm bells !!). After readjustment to the bottom it runs smooth. Treybrad had a good point that the valves will never be way out you should only need to adjust them a touch if you are needing to screw or unscrew more than a turn (or even less ? been a while) probably your piston is not in the right position. Hope this helps...now u have to empty that damn coolant again :)

No, not really. It's never run poorly, and I've barely had to adjust any valves when checking them. At 7k I wouldn't expect anything to feel different.

What was the size of the hex key?

Hi Nice video and just doing my valves now but I am a bit confused about something. The video says "Align 1 with notch for cylinder 1 (clutch side)" and " Align 2 with notch for cylinder 2 ( brake side )" but when you go to work on cyl one it is the brake side you are working on and when you go to cyl 2 it is the clutch side. Am I missing something ?

Cylinder 1 is the left cylinder if you're sitting on the bike (clutch lever side). Cylinder 2 is on the right if you're sitting on the bike (brake lever side).

Hey TreyBrad quick question when you aligned the cam sprocket was the mark on the top line or bottom line? Reason being in your video it looks like bottom when you align it with the black cable in the background....my manual says top and if I do top I get really loose valve tapping when started up much like a previous comment made

Should be the mark on the bottom. Last couple times I've checked I don't even remove that cover. If you can wiggle the rockers you're at TDC. If they're too tight to move, you need to rotate the crank around. If you're making big adjustments something is wrong, step back and check what you're doing. Shouldn't need more than a nudge one way or the other.

Hey Guys. Great video TreyBrad. I just adjusted mine following the service manual and it's clicking quite badly. Just to confirm something, should I align the marks in the camshaft ( 'I' and 'II') to the left (as you're looking at it) index line on the camshaft not the one towards the end of the shaft. The Service Manual specifies to align it to the top.

I think u have crankshaft and camshaft mixed up. Crank mark to the right (align horizontally) cam to the bottom (align vertically).

Fantastic Vid but just double check the cylinder locations. On my 2012 NX700 Cylinder 1 is on the right hand side (brake side) of the bike.

Where did you find the right feeler gauges? Usually in a set is 0,15 - 0,20 - 0,25 - 0,30 mm Can't find online 0,17 and 0,28 mm

I imagine after 7 months you found your answer, but I used SAE set(inches). .006 intake and .011 for exhaust

use lock nut torque wrench 14n(in&ex)

Absolutely. I've reused mine 5 times now I think and it looks new. It's a heavy duty, rubber gasket.

egoniusz I'd probably set aside 3 hours the first time, taking your time. I got to where I could complete the procedure in an hour start to finish after a few times.

12,000 km but with the newer NC750 Honda have doubled the distance for valve clearances to 24,000km. When I had mine done at 12,000km there were only a couple of valves out about 1 thou - nothing to worry about. Other owners also indicate 24,000 km intervals are fine.

Valve checks at 8k is the only reason i am not considering this bike. Other manufacturers have 15k and 25k for most bikes. my harley came with hydraulic valve adjusters, so no valave checks required ever on that.

Jero Berkley almost all new harley vtwin models comes with hydraulic lifters. I have iron 883 2016 and there is no valve check and valve maintainance required as per owners manual. I would suggest you if you are looking to buy one, go talk to dealership and have them show you the service interval of that bike. If it need valve checks it will show up in service intervals and in owners manual.
