    I really like this mower. It was well the money. I got mine in 2016. It’s like the ‘tiger tank’ of mowers. Good in open country. Changed the oil every other (roughly) season. Blades and filter of course. I do run good gas in it. Fires up every season on the first or second pull. Good video. Thanks.

    Yes, can't go wrong. I actually ran the mower 4 years on the original break in oil. I sent it to Blackstone for an analysis and they said it was still good to use! Either way I changed it. Bad news though, Honda will stop making lawn mowers in Sept of 2023 so the supply will probably run out in 2024. I'm not worried, I expect this mower to go another 20 years and with the lifetime Nexite deck warranty, that shouldn't be a problem.

    Funny my HRX has never started on the first pull, usually takes 4 pulls, very anemic start. Small yard so I do not have very many hours on it, I just checked the air filter it looks brand new, probably about 6 years old.

    thanks for posting this video. I've used Honda mowers since the mid 1980's and always changed the oil every season once in the spring and again in the late summer since I mulch alot of leaves in the late fall . The engines will out last the transmission if you do this type of maintenance!

Only thing I did different for the oil drain/change, was I used an extractor pump I found on amazon. Let it run for a few mins after I finished and she's running like a champ. Something i like to do when tipping the mower over the drain oil is get two pieces of paper towel and tape them to the top of the deck so oil doesn't drain down the side. This creates less mess.

    When dipping the mower to drain the oil. You can take an old soup can and place it near the spout OR lift the drain pan close to the spout so that no fluid spills to the enclosure.

    Thanks for a great, comprehensive maintenance video. My HRX2173HYA is a lot older than yours, so my part numbers are all different than yours (except for the spark plug). I noticed that when you started the mower, the engine surged up and down while idling. I’ve been told that is normal, but that just doesn’t sound right. What do you think?

  • @OwenLucas

    @OwenLucas

    Жыл бұрын

    The surging is normal, it is the auto choke. It does that for 20 seconds or so then levels off.

  • @tinkerscorner54
    @tinkerscorner54 Жыл бұрын

    @4:24 You can fix that surging by cleaning the carb and especially the pilot jet for the idle circuit (under the Phillips screw on top of the carb (that's the culprit)). It's not a hard job and, with practice, you can do the whole thing in 10-20 minutes. Good video!

    Interesting you didn't mention required oil levels and how to read on the dip stick. So I take it has no timing adjustments?

  • @OwenLucas

    @OwenLucas

    2 жыл бұрын

    That is why I provided the correct ounces required to fill the crank case. It's not a large motor so it will drain completely if you leave it on the side but you have a good point. It's pretty easy to read the dipstick though. Oil present in the crosshatched area after engine has been sitting for a while means you're good to go.

    Hello and thank you for your video. One question, when you start the machine at 4:20 it seems the noise of the engine is not continuous, is up and down, does is correct?. My HRX 476 has the same behavior and never know if this is correct or not. Thank you.

    When your lawnmower is running, the motor is surging, you need to clean your carburetor completely. Spray carburetor cleaner in the throat. If that doesn’t work, it needs taken apart and the Jets cleaned. Surging shouldn’t hurt your engine but it sounds horrible and you won’t be cutting under full power

  • @OwenLucas

    @OwenLucas

    Жыл бұрын

    These Honda motors do that on cold starts, it's the auto choke. Once it warms up in 20 seconds it's smooth operation. But now I know what to do if it does start surging when it's warm, thank you.

    @SKgoon I encourage you to definitely watch a video for hrx217 carb repair.. your carb is prolly shellac'd... I tore down, cleaned and rebuilt mine yesterday. 10mm socket, skinny flathead screwdriver, spray start and spray lube as cleaning fluids and I used the end of the wire spring off the carb (of the mower) to ream out the jet.. Cardboard to catch the mess, half a roll of paper towels, a small piece of fine grit sandpaper, a 3m pad and some q-tips. Runs perfect today! Now, it's time for an oil change and It'll be golden. Good luck w yours!
