Honda GCV160 with a broken intake valve rocker arm as well as no movement from the valve. How, why?

Ғылым және технология

I have had tons of these honda GCV's, this was the very first time I had issues with one. Cracked rocker arm, froze intake valve. what could have caused this and why. I imagine the push rod is bent, if it has one. Again how? Any idea's. If anyone has experienced this and seen internally and has an idea how it occurred I'd love to know. In meantime, that engine is coming off in place of another honda. (Repair required engine to come off anyway). For now, thats a parts engine.

Thanks bud good to be back. 👍 Videos are going to be a little bit more infrequent right now I've been really busy. But you'll see me from time to time. I'll pick it back up eventually. In the meantime I recommend checking out redneck computer geek he found one of one of those Bolens around the same exact time.

It is a possibility that the adjustment bolt got loose and caused the push rod to fall out of timing, this may have caused the valve head to come into contact with the cylinder head and completely ruin it. If those rods are bent in any way they aren’t going to move anywhere without being cut down. Or it could also be that the guy adjusted it wrong causing the same thing to happen. It might be a good idea to pull that entire head off to see the damage done. The piston head will also have an indent on it from where the valve made contact, that will prove if I’m right.

Excellent suggestion. I will pull the head when I have some time and have a look. For now, she's already swapped out. Thanks for the comment. 👍

This seems common on these engines. The same thing happened to the GCV160 on my pressure washer.

First obe I had that did that on a Honda. The valve seat behind the head came loose stopping full travel of the pushrod which in turn bent it and the lifter at the front. I’ve seen it happen often on the newer Briggs V twin engines. You can fix it, but you gotta remove the entire head and you can usually put the guide back in place and than hammer and dolly it so it doesn’t come loose again. You do that by taking a hammer and punch and tapping divot holes all around the aluminum where it sits which compresses the metal surrounding it so it can’t pop out again. Otherwise you can replace it if it got really chewed up, but still a good idea to hammer and dolly the new one too, so that one never pops out either.

I just dropped mine off to be fixed, hopefully not too expensive. I will be curious if that's what caused the rocker arm to break. @@Mr_Tecumseh
