The whole JIS - Phillips - Reed&Prince - etc. business shows that we as human beings will somehow find a way to needlessly over-complicate everything given enough time.😁 Wiha tools seem to be more popular in the UK than the US but they sure do have some neat stuff. Some serious guck came out of that fuel tap. Great job as always Del and Penny. Best wishes my friends. ❤👍👍

Hi there Rick.. Yes Sir, Guck indeed.. the seal itself wasn't badly worn, but after 28 years, i guess it starts to let fuel past.. and with the chemical make up of modern gasoline, it probably didn't help..! and yes i think the whole JIS things just exposes how the two engineering standards of Japanese and U.S. developed independently of each other, leaving the tools slightly incompatible.. but as long as you know, it's easy to reach for the right tool..!

Your precision pays off again, Del! There’s something very satisfying about fuel system work- when it’s done and everything works- ask me how I know! Thanks for another great lesson! 🏍👍🏍

Yuk, all that residue in that tap. Good you took it apart and made it work for the next decades. I've never opened a tap, so it's good to see what lurks behind ;-) Thanks and have a great weekend, Günter/Nürnberg

Hi Penny and Del, great video! I know that petroleum jelly will attack rubber so I assume that all of the flexible parts in the rebuild kit are made from something else, like some kind of elastomer. Nice job on the rebuild - I'll be tackling the fuel tap on my own bike as soon as the rebuild kit arrives. Take care, my friends. Be well and ride safe!

Yes indeed, and most of what we assume is "rubber" in automotive use, it a mixture and blend of many things to make it applicable to it's intended purpose.. and im sure that anything in contact with gasoline is a long way from just basic natural rubber.. ! take care and have a great week buddy.. You could use either, i thought it was a good opportunity to make the point that some form of lubrication is better than none for the reasons stated.. !

Delboy-I race vintage enduro karts in the USA. Your video some time back explained how to restore a wet clutch. Our axle clutches are nearly the design. I’ve yet to find a tutorial for a kart clutch. THANK YOU!

Had to do that every year in my snow blower. Due ethanol in gas. Sometimes gets stuck in there. There’s no ethanol free gas near here.

Ha ha yes.. i think essentially it's still a Phillips head, (after all, it still says PH2 on the handle).. i think the JIS version is a slightly different pitch on the tip and reaches to the bottom of Japanese screws more efficiently.! it's clear they do work better, specially on old and part chewed screws... Great to hear form you Harold, have a wonderful weekend.. D&Pxx

What were they running that bike on, Dandelion & Burdock? - that poor tap had kidney stones! Though, given that today's fuel is a synthetic blend of cheap moonshine with eleven herbs & spices + VAT, it's hardly surprising. No real fun being a diaphragm, just the usual ups & downs, eh : )xx

You're right.. fuel has change greatly over the years in order for vehicles to fart flowers from the tail pipe, but on the up side.. it does last a bit longer, just like the beer in the local Slug and Lettuce when they add water to that too.!

I just discovered your channel the other day and am super impressed. The quality of your work is impeccable. I do have one question. I am not an expert by any means, so if I am incorrect please let me know. Your method used for rust prevention. Quenching hot metal in oil is tempering. Not controling the temperatures you could be altering the grade of the fasteners. For the majority this is not an issue. I would be concerned with things like handlebar retaining bolts, shock bolts, basically any fastener that has any safety related concerns. I feel other methods used for rust prevention may be better suited in some cases. Am I assuming correctly that you are using this method to maintain that raw untreated steel look ? Or is it a cost/ time restraint ? Zinc plating is relatively cheap in comparison to chrome plating and is very effective for rust prevention. Machinist bluing is also very good and lasts quite well. Even a good quality of paint. Or maybe I am totally wrong with every thing I've stated. Let me know if you can. Its more a curiosity thing for me at this point. Thanks mate. I've subscribed to your channel. Now I have to go back and watch all your videos. My bike of choice, Buell.

Stupid q my broer.....could you put the tap through a blaster with fine beads rather than scraping it? Also where do I get that Wiha torque screw driver!!!!!!! Lekker job boet!

  • @Moonfleet41

The danger of putting components with moving parts in to any form of blast media means you'll inevitably get some left behind to, potentially, wreck the mechanism, so always best with fuel taps and carbs, to very gently scrape out any residue and just use the pure liquid blast of brake cleaner to rinse out the bits!

I wonder how many people don't know the difference between Philips, Pozidriv and JIS. One of my step daughters asked her mother one time ' why do you call the screwdriver Philip ' . Same step daughter is a partner in a corporate law firm earning around £200,000 per year. She doesn't need to know how to use a screwdriver. 😂
