i have 18,000 miles on my 2017 africa twin, mostly off-road miles. I also have a motocross backround and was skeptical of riding an adventure bike off road, but after getting my AT set up for off-road it does way more than people give it credit for. For me living in southern California riding mostly desert the main appeal of this bike is being able to take off from my house on the bike and then go off-roading on the trails and riding home. Learning to ride an adventure bike off-road well is like re learning how to ride all together because its much different than a dirtbike the main draw backs of the africa twin in my personal experience is that the AT is not very off-road ready off the showroom floor, the tires suck, no crash bars, no bark busters, the suspension is set up for someone under 200 pounds, and lastly the seat isn't very comfortable for long trips. With all that said however i have abused my AT through some of the most brutal scenarios and in typical honda fashion its been extremely reliable. If you are going to buy a honda africa twin though please consider buying a 2019 or newer if you can afford it. The older models have fork stiction issues and misfire issues that honda refuses to acknowledge. Edit: Great video by the way, if your going to buy an Africa Twin the 2020 is the best yet. Huge improvements over the first generation

11:44 - that could be an advantage in disguise: on the Honda Adventure Experience they told us explicitly not to look at the ground underneath us as that was a surefire way to end up on the ground. Rather, we were to look at the ground about 10-20ft ahead, and avoid micro-steering like the plague.

Have mine (a DCT) now for 3 weeks and I just love this bike. I live in Spain with great curvey roads across the mountains, but also fantastic off road trails. Use it as much as I can pure for the fun of it. Already had some great adventures with it. This bike is a boss!

I bought this bike in March and have over 5000 kms on it both on and off road... It's a great road bike with lots of power and handling but I was pleasantly surprised as to how well it works offroad. It's too heavy to be a great single track bike but it's perfect for the logging roads I use it on... Thanks for the great video...👍

Just bought the CRF 1100 L Africa Twin Adventure Sports DCT ES a few months ago, and I'm perfectly happy with it. Smooth road and trail riding (80% roads / 20% trails and soft to medium off road), very forgiving bike, especially the curve light feature on the Adventure Sports is marvellous. Brilliant commuter and every day bike. The electronic suspension works like a dream, with really noticable differences in settings. Although it's not everybodies cup of tea, but the CDT works like a charm and makes the ride so much more relaxed - its simply one thing less You need to care about. Also the Dual Clutch Gearbox offers at all 4 riding modes, containing 3 sport modes, so I dont miss any sportivity. Generally I mostly ride my bike in Urban mode, the difference in power output is quite chilly and convenient for me, as I prefer more cruising to going fast. Also the Honda luggage system fits my needs perfectly, as I chose the plastic sidebags (which are obviously enough for the few bigger tours I ride per year) and don't need any side panels added to the bike. What I would always suggest to buyers are the rally footpegs and the rubber tank pads, which give you a stronger stand and much better controllability, both on and off road. All in all - best overrall adventure bike I ever rode, happy to have it.

I bought my AT last week and not planning on going offroad, too much money to lay it down in a ditch somewhere. 🤣 have a smaller 650 honda from -97 for that purpose. The AT feels great on the tarmac, very comfortable and with Android auto there is no need for a GPS-device when touring. 👍 much better acceleration than what I expected from the 102hp engine. Some japanese sorcery going on under the tank. Best sounding OEM silencer on the market I dare say. 😁

Good vid. Looking at the AT - not a new one tho - I had a VStrom1000 and a KTM950ADV and rode those off road - some fairly tricky stuff, not single trail though - well, not difficult single trail. Basically looking for a fast, sporty, comfortable road bike, that will be as good, or better, off-road as my KTM950. I sat on a 2019 AT with the seat on low position, and couldn't believe how good it felt - easy two feet flat on the floor and it felt like it was carrying its weight really low. Be super interesting to ride one. Hoping to take one for a ride soon.

I haven't ridden one of these but in the flesh it's an imposing and handsome machine which I am sure provides the rider with a good deal of presence and authority on the road, which has to be a good thing in this day and age. How did you get on with the electronics? Some other reviewers have said that they are too complicated and take away some of the joy of motorcycling. Thanks for yet another great review!

Thanks! The bike is great; the electronics are confusing and perhaps over complicated, but with time they become second nature. A sporty and a gentle mode would suffice, but with 100+ bhp off road, it has to have something to calm it down

Nice review. I've been looking between this and KTM1290...both pretty heavy. I've also got a small Yamaha XT250 for slow trail riding...its so easy to ride with steering lock like a trials bike. Yet I use it for errands all around town. I've been shopping for a adventure bike for 2up riding and weekend offroad camping. Between the newer 2020 Africa win and KTM 1290 Adventure. My only question...does it remember the last ride mode setting you were in? So if I"m offroad and shut the bike off, do I have to set it again? Or turn off ABS again? Thanks

I've been riding since '88 so I'm not afraid of a clutch but I gotta say I like the DCT. The "D" shift points Honda set are way too short (6th gear at 36MPH?!?!) but use any of the "S" modes or manual and it's really nice. The AT will never be a dirt bike but if you're gonna ride it on the road for 100+ miles before you go off road (I camp) you don't want a dirt bike! I had a DR-650 and that thing was really scary in crosswinds on the highway.

Nice review, good to see an adventure bike tested out. At just 5’6” tall it’s a segment of the market that’s ruled out for me, or I could just about ride one of the small engined bikes like a 750GS, but I see your point about the purpose - for the road I’d rather have a sports tourer with a fat tyre and for the dirt then a small CRF or similar would make more sense.

I've taken mine on several trips of 3-400 miles each way. You'll want to either stick with the default (for this trim) windscreen which is basically nothing at all (I can't tell the difference when standing up on the freeway or sitting down) or go with a really tall aftermarket or use the Honda touring windscreen with one of those clamp on extensions. For me at 6'3" the tall Honda screen by itself bobbled the top of my helmet rattling my head around at freeway speeds. Oh yeah, you'll probably want to lower the seat height as well.

We've just finished reviewing the DCT Africa Twin Adventure Sports. The DCT was incredible on the Gold Wing but not on the Africa Twin - manual much better. It's big as bikes go, so maybe with the seat on high or even the taller seat option you'd be fine. It is heavy, but so are all adventure bikes, except Husqvarna 701LR which is epic (we reviewed that recently) and KTM 790 Adventure R (but that's a bit small perhaps). I wouldn't buy an adventure bike unless I really wanted to do long haul rides because they are so heavy and unnecessary off road.

I got a seat cover for $20 on Amazon and modified the straps (that are supposed to go under the seat) to loop off the bike frame to hold the cover in place. It made a world of difference.

At 6'3" with the factory tall windscreen and the seat lowered my face was out of the wind but it bobbled / vibrated my helmet like crazy and I picked up lots of wind noise. At 6'7" you'll absolutely want an aftermarket tall windscreen or (since I already bought mine) I added one of those clamp-on extensions and it straightened everything out.

Never had that shaky feeling on my head lik this. maybe had full impact of wind on my chest. Here it is shaking your head from left to right. It is really dangerous. In stead of working on all these electronics and high tech., some head stability would be nice. I'v heard about a small shield on the fuel tank to reduce turbulence. I'll check out with DriveMag Riders...

Both nice bikes. I’d say the Honda is definitely bigger and you have the option of the taller seat. Hondas are incredibly reliable and the Africa Twin is incredible on road and remarkably good off road considering it’s weight. I’d have a testride and then decide.Hope that helps 👍

I"m torn between this bike, Yamaha T7 and the new TIger 900 Rally. I understand the scoped seat thing, especially if you have to ride in sand. Tiger has the best passenger seating according to my lady. Yamaha is the cheapest. Leftover 2020 honda's are tempting compared to Triumph tiger 900. Only really dumb thing about the new TFT screen is you have to always acknowlege a warning message on the touchsceen. If you forget and take off down the road, it will still be on. Why can't Honda just put a 10 second timer on it? Seems really simple software change that won't cause the rider to be distracted if they take off and forget to press it.

If you ignore the warning for like 5-8 seconds it goes away on its own. Seriously, it'll be gone before you leave the street your house is on. BTW if you're going away from civilization, reliability is huge. Look into reliability / warranty options. The tiger is at the bottom of the barrel, the KTM warranty doesn't cover any part of the bike but the engine / frame / tranny the day after you bought it. Honda covers everything for a year (except tires / battery and such) and will sell you an extended for the next 10 I think?

This is a nice bike, but it's just too big, the engine is way too big. There is a guy on youtube rode his bike around the world but he did it on a Honda cub 90 cc so a Honda Africa twin with a huge engine kind of defeats the object of the design of the bike. 500 cc seems more useful. Thanks for the good and detailed review. No doubt about it, the Africa twin is very well manufactured and very comfy for the longer trip. But what i hate about these "adventure bikes" is this large amount of "electronic bullshit". If there occurs a problem somewhere out there (e.g. diarrhoe in the chip), you are really fucked if you're not in europe, and of course the trip will be over. I share your opinion, off road when you drop this bike (and you will) how the hell do you pick it back up again with all this weigh unless you have help or are full of muscles like you, my CCM off roader weighs almost 100kg less than this monster and I struggle to pick it back up after a spill especially when tired and or bashed around after a crash, I think that like the Range Rover you mentioned, the vast majority of these bikes will hardly see any meaningful off road use, I suspect that Honda Marketing knows this and has produced what might be seen as a bit of an illogical off road bike to get market share (profits) in a fairly recently introduced class aimed at affluent more mature riders..
