I put the knuckle between two 4x4s,lug bolts facing down. Then find the correct size socket as the inner hub, place it on the hub, and hit it with a 3 pound hammer. Takes a couple minutes. No damage, to the hub. But it's impressive to see guys get creative😊

that 1/4 inch tubing did the trick . I have in the past suspended the knuckle in the air with rope , chain bungee straps ETC & 'carefully' hammered the hub out on the ones that you cant get in a press . Have since bought a HF hub puller installer & it says you can pull the hubs & bearings & re-install without completely pulling the knuckle but haven't used it yet & hope I don't have to .

This is great! Wish I had the steel and a welder. I'm going to have to give my Honda Civic a go with the 5lb slide hammer method. I hope it doesn't damage anything but it seems lots of folks do it that way.

With this puller design you could pull the hub from a car directly, no need to disassemble the whole thing.

Gotta love home made tools, this looks pretty good! Hub tamer and Hub grappler use fine threads rather than the typical coarse threads in readily available threaded rod. Also newer version of the hub tamer have a pair of thrust washers on the end to reduce the friction of rotation. Lube threads every time with gear oil. Maybe add a heavy duty thrust washer to convert as much of the rotational energy into pulling force. Nice idea, to add a clamp, hopefully it won't get in the way. Overall well done.

Nice idea, maybe also try inserting a thrust bearing in between the washers to lower the friction a bit

try using triangular gussets at the corners. Lots of added support, minimal effort to fabricate.

+luke saylor hi you are right , when I made it I was not sure how much space the hub would take up when it came out so I didn't do that. If I was to do it again I would would make it taller maybe 2" and run braces from right beside the center hole down to each leg giving the triangle. Just a question/suggestion. Why not weld a U-shaped strap to one side of the towers? Then you slip it over the hub like a yolk, and it keeps the bars from spreading.

hi I have more pics of this here goo.gl/photos/NyjibiC9Arj88jdL6 the reason it spreads so easy is because there are no flat areas for it to sit on under the dust shield except 2 very small spots where the dust shield screws into. So even on the bottom of the feet I have drilled 2 spots where the head of the screws can sit in so the feet would sit flat but the area is so small that even if it were to slip a little bit it would start bending which is what you saw in the video. I know many other cars have large flat spots where you could just pick any spot and it would have no problem but you don;t know until you look under the dust shield. The yoke would have to absolutely stop it from spreading we are talking 1/8" or it would slip and start bending so unless the yoke is made from some really thick stuff that it will not bend itself I am not sure how that would work. Making the clamp is the easiest as you can use any cheap material like that 1/16" thick 1" square tube in the video, it would not have bent if I used the clamp. The easiest thing to do is triangulate it and use a thick top tube and if you don't have access to a thicker top tube you can use a thin one and plate it to double it's thickness. I had the material but I think it would have cost like $40. I would say if you are doing bearings and hubs on the car then maybe just use a puller, but you can't use a puller when the knuckle is off the car unless you clamp the whole thing in a vise this is much easier for when the assemble is off the car. Thanks for the reply! Yeah on my Subarus there is very little base to set a tool like this on, but the round style puller with plates worked well. I don't have my tutorial up yet, but I will have a time lapse of using it up later today. I'll link you. Thanks again!

hi you can use any bolt, i bought the original threaded rod in the video from home depot but I bought this from the hardware store so that was actually cost some money but I forgot , it's a grade 8 , 3/4" bolt but 5/8 is more than enough because you only really need to pull that hub like 1 inch or less as it will separate from the rear inner race and then become loose. It usually doesn't take ton of force to pull hubs unlike bearing that have been exposed to salt and stuff I could never pull my rusty bearings with those bearing puller the screws would break before the bearing moves

Rather than welding square bar or tube together, why not saw the tool out of a single piece of plate? Not only do you get a stronger tool. But this also makes it possible to fabricate this tool without the need for welding (which would allow many more people to make this tool for themselves).

Your threads are reversed on the threaded shaft. The reason why the box pipe bent is because you were pushing into the knuckle instead of drawing the rear larger nut out. You were pushing instead of pulling on the wheel hub. Take the threaded shaft and flip it and you'll be good.

The force is being pulled towards the knuckle that is what pulls up on the hub. When you jump up where does the force go to? Think about standing on a piece of wood suspended between 2 tables and when you jump the wood plank snaps and you go crashing into the ground :)

Nice job. I'm not hating on the design but a few thoughts: If you had the knuckle off the car already why not use a press? If you don't have a press, this scenario is a good excuse to buy an inexpensive 20t press. For those without the fabrication skills to do this: Look at buying a used hub grappler or hub shark. Same concept. They aren't cheap but by the time you've used it twice it's paid for itself. If you don't have a hub tool or press and the wife won't let you buy one, you can take the assembly to a shop that has a press. Have them press out old bearings then press on the new ones. That'll still be cheaper then having them do everything.

I already did the front hubs and bearings, I need you to make me one so I can do the rear hubs and bearings. Of course I will pay you for it. Julian Garcia hi it is 1.5" square tubing on top and the sides are 1.25" the sides are only 1/8 but the top should be as thick as possible

How much did it end up costing you to make? Or did you just have all the tubing laying around? I recently bought the bearing press and removal kit for about $62, and for the two bearings I changed already it was definitely worth it. I had seen this type of tool and thought about fabricating, but I wanted to make sure it would last and work properly.
