Homestyle Peranakan Food In A Hawker Centre? Why I Learned To Cook | On The Red Dot - I Am A Hawker
28-year-old Sarah Sng disliked cooking but was always interested in starting her own business. She got a taste of what it’s like running an F&B outlet when her parents opened a small Peranakan eatery, giving her an opportunity to learn the ropes. Inspired to make Peranakan cuisine more accessible and affordable, Sarah left her corporate job to dive into the hawker scene.
When she first opened the stall, Sarah’s dad was the main chef and Sarah prepped only the side dishes. Determined to run the stall independently, she started learning to cook from her father. It wasn’t easy and came with its share of challenges. It took Sarah over a year to master the culinary craft and nuances of Nyonya food. Now, she has customers commenting that her food reminds them of their grandmothers’ cooking.

This Nonya stall is my family's favourite. We would like buy takeways like 3-4 times a week. The owners are very nice people - especially the father Leon (Sarah is very polite too). They are very honest people doing an honest job. Their food is delicious and really down to earth.

Bring nonya food to hawker centre is a good idea. For most people, it is a bit expensive as a hawker food. But, comparing to restaurant, it is reasonable. I wish her success in her business

If she opens a store near me, I'm in so much trouble when I look at my scale 😅
What a wonderful young lady. 😊
The food here is amazing, Sarah is such a sweet lady.
We should only call them "Hawkers" after 2 years of operations in a hawker centre.. So Sarah deserved the title of a "Hawker" since she survive for almost 3 years now. Good Job!
I stay tampines and occasionally will walk over to pasir ris hawker to eat. This stall, wild olives (western) and prawnaholic (prawn mee) are the best options there. Used to have the reimundo congee also v good but closed down so sad. Anyway, it's rare to find peranakan food!!! So very happy to have this store here 🤓

Well done, Sarah, no success without sweat, blood, and tears. You had finally made it to the route of success. Congratulations to you may your business prosper to great heights.
I love Peranakan food. All praise for her to work so hard for the stall and continue to persevere. Terima kasich.
loving these hawker series!
👍thumbs up, Sarah. many young hawkers just want to do trendy food. we need to keep heritage food alive. a popular Teochew Satay Beehon stall in Redhill is also being looked after by the owner's son. it's nice to see young hawkers wanting to continue their family legacy & do it with passion.
Have tried and really liked it…highly recommended if you are around Pasir Ris! Keep up the good work Sara!
So lovely daughter father ❤
People do not see all the hard work and long hours running a hawker food stall. People also do not see the high rental and ingredients costs and how difficult it is to make a profit.
Thanks for sharing and teaching, Awesome food my friend!
Wonderful young lady..being a hawker is really not easy. but if that is your passion..ganbatte.
Very fair prices for Peranakan food. We need to get over the idea that eating at a hawker centre should cost +/-$5 and under.
Such a loving bond... Nice!
Waaa i wanna go to try it as i'm a Peranakan too must make it there to support

I'm from Singapore but moved to NYC 30 some years ago, dishes you made sure looks delicious but wondering why you would use packaged coconut milk where the natural coconut is so plentiful and easy to get there, makes a really big difference. I can't get real coconut milk here and have to settle for the ones from Thailand. Happy for you, not many are ready for hard work.
Blessed with Gd Health cum brisk business plus Joy always……. Fighting!!!
VERY COOL SARAH

I stay west but i will take my parents go all the way to this stall to support her and treat my parents some nonya food. Indeed not common to see nonya food at hwaker as its usually more expensive as its labour intensive. Also nonya food definitely sell well as my grandmother also sell nonya food pre covid. She got covid and retired after long term covid.

Nyonya food is from Malaysia or Singapore? Let me guess, its a Malaysian food. Correct me if i am wrong.
I don't agree, but she maintain quality, I respect quality.

Gloves on only when handling cooked food items. Ingredients before cooking can be handled without gloves.

Actually gloves is not clean n hygiene u think.. When gloves on u don't wash hands as often compare without gloves..
Those who are willing to work hard in s'pore are bound to do well and earn high wages. On the other hand, there are those that don't take education or work seriously and end up with low wages. They then blame everyone except themselves. They're a burden to the country.😂😂
it is so unhygienic to wash the chicken meat in the washing sink!! yucks! to think that her dad is ex chef fr a hotel! I won't patronise this stall. Will ask my frds cols and relatives not to too! thanks for the video. if not we won't know how they actually handling the raw chicken meat!!

For sure they have 2 sinks. 1 sink especially just to wash the chicken.
@AidenWinters871

Bacteriae are 'killed' during the cooking process. By right, there is no need to even wash the chicken. Just like the wearing of gloves may not indicate a higher standard of sanitation, maybe we, on our part, should refrain from making assumptions that they do not maintain acceptable hygiene standards nor spread anything without first confirming our 'truths'
I was very distracted by the heavy fake lashes👎🏻.
