Homesteading On A Mountain Can We Garden On A Rock???

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Most of the snow has left the mountain and we're full speed ahead with our gardening plans. The greenhouse is teaming with vegetable plants but there's lots to do before we can get them in the ground. We live on a mountain slope and granite ledge is just below the surface. This creates challenges for gardening up here and for fencing in the garden as well. Is it Mission Impossible? Heck no! Follow along as we fulfill our dreams of having a self sufficient homestead, living off the grid in the New Hampshire woods.

MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:
Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.
Video of icebox:
Video of Gas Refrigerator:
Propane Freezer:
Q: What do you use for cooking and heating? A: We use a Kitchen Queen 380 for cooking and heating during the winter months but we also have an antique gas stove in the cabin for when we don't need the heat from the KQ.

I would rather look at pictures of different homesteads than go to an art museum. To me, your homestead is art with an eye for engineering while maintaining the rustic beauty. I call it man art (with a sprinkle of Lori art). Slàinte Mhath

Amen, and.. even if it were just you alone worshipping the father there would still be three gathered in his name, you, the son and the holy spirit gathering to worship the Father so, anywhere you are giving thanks and blessing his name He is there, right in the midst!! 💚 Although, to be fair, I read this scripture today and in context to be true to the word of God this is actually talking about church discipline and the establishment of it by 2 or 3 witnesses as was Jewish custom at that time. For something to be brought against someone, sin it had to be established by the witness of two or three to be valid. The scripture before and after this verse in Matthew clarifies the context. Matthew 18:15-20. Its speaking to the Omnipresence of God in the midst of church discipline that in such a case, that God will be among them as they seek unity in making biblical decisions in the church.

Good morning JC and Lori. Nice to see you have folks from England and Ireland saying hello. And then there is me saying hello from 40 miles away! Not that I wouldn't mind having a Black & Tan and shepherd's pie in an cozy Irish pub :-) When I lived in England , my favorite was hard cider and Yorkshire pudding on a rainy day, next to a fireplace. And someday- someday, enjoying a hot cup of tea and venison stew at your cabin '-). You mean...New Hampshire has STONES ?? :-O I thought our farm cornered the market on stones... Your progress looks great! Our raised beds are going in this month. Our first calf arrived yesterday. A fine Hereford hefier. !9 to go, if we don't have twins! Your green house project came out fantastic! Take care- Diane

Hey Boss, just admit it. The "little boy" was coming out in you and you just had to play in the mud. Nothing wrong with that. Let kids be kids and have fun! LOL. As you were describing your plans of how it's going to look when it's finished, I could see it all in my head. I've always had a knack for seeing the finished project before it's ever started. Those that are able to do that (because some people can't), know what has to be done throughout the project, to reach that goal. I like your thought process and the way you plan things. It pays off in the end! The greenhouse is gardening is looking great! Have a great day!!!

Before I retired I did some designs for "underground" greenhouses for hillsides in Northern US locations. We designed them to be hydroponic with large thermal mass walls to minimize need for heat using the sun to supplement pellet feed boilers. You could do them with conventional dirt growing though. They are perfect for shallow soils and northern - cold climate. I am talking to some other folks in New Hampshire about the potential to do them up there. Could be an idea for a future year for you.

Hello! Boy does your video bring back a lot of memories! We also lived on Ridge line on granite, but in Vermont. While creating a flat space for the cabin we hit a steep, deep wall that couldn't be moved. It became the central fireplace and cabin was built around it, lol. We had to create retention walls and drainage creeks too. I eventually created a lovely garden spot with the wild Irises and Peonies. In between the rocks I planted Hens & Chickens and several other Succulents that grew quite well there. You and Laurie will have fun there. Boy do I remember Mud Season! You just cant adequately describe the headaches and how to live through them to people who don't understand it. Have a wonderful Easter, take care of yourselves, and belly rubs to the fur kids. :-)

Fantastic job ,done well, mud helps to make stones move so easy. the French drain is the only way to go. Do not use the drain water to water your plants, it well kill them, water with clean fresh water. On the wild yellow iris. They like wet ground. Plant them along the end of your french. I sell mine for .40 cents each, with the greens, foliage, to a local florist, $300 a season. It could pay for gas trip to town. Plant basil in the rock. Basil likes it very warm. Rocks well hold the heat. You might want to consider lowering the day temperature in the green house, your plants won't get leggy. It hardens them, bigger stems. Keep up the good work, you make hard work look so easy. Happy Easter

Nothing like a tractor and Tall boots on a cold muddy day . Having you take the time to explain the water management plan should help folks think through their own projects. There will be plenty of fresh good eats a few months from now . I will have to see the moose , deer and rabbit proof fence ideas on the planning board. Down here in N.C. I think I have the 2nd largest collection of moles and voles per acre !!!! we are getting our first yellow and white butterflies. "Still got the knack"...? I'll say, you sure do! I was fascinated. I watched a real pro, years ago...build a huge retaining wall in my back yard. (Not where I live now.) I thought he was quite the expert. You sir...are every bit as good. Maybe even better.

Yay !! The kids make a cameo! Got'choo some mud soup simmering, ack !! Gonna French drain along the base of the wall (uphill side), and use that to divert to either end? Are you shallow enough (to ledge) between the greenhouse and wall, to just remove the soil and add more crushed rock for moisture to travel through? M'be a little garden fabric between the rock and replacement of soil? That Kioti sure saves a feller's back !! Nice work on the start of that wall.
