There are many benefits to raising Homestead Ducks, in this guide to raising Khaki Campbells we look at everything you need to know about Khaki Campbell ducks, including raising them from ducklings, accommodating their needs and the benefits they bring to your homestead and garden. I'm also answering questions that friends and followers have written in with such as "do ducks need a pond" "can ducks be raised with chickens" and "will ducks tear up the garden".
You can find more details on our duck coop build here • Building a duck house ...
and we also review our automatic coop door here • Battery operated chick...

    This was very helpful…! I just impulse bought 2 kaki cambles, i had been thinking about ducks for my garden and then i just did it… I am raising them with chicks and mixing their feeds together and wetting it. And putting paper towel down on the floor because those ducks ate messy..!

    Wonderful video! You had me at "They'll forage for spiders"! lol We live in a very mossy, damp, treed property and let me tell ya.. We have some monster spiders *shivers* -- and lots of them. Ducks seem so lovely, I love to watch them at our local lake/park.

    Whether or not to have a drake? I had a (rescued) drake that, when an adolescent, bit me once out of frustration. I pushed his back down whilst grabbing the scruff of his neck, and as soon as he did not resist, I let go. I just mimicked nature in the dominance game. We were still best friends, he is such a loving, friendly and communicative boy. He never bit me again. My two (separate) rescue ducks did not get on that well, the drake really settled things down and they were all happy ducks. I did not want a drake but I am so glad he came into the duck family. Drakes are usually hard to rehome so I was glad he got a chance at life, he has a lovely nature.

    yes its a controversial subject for many - especially people who have had negative experiences. We got a drake a few months back and he's been a gem. We hatched new ducklings end of summer and he's been an active part of the family - not like many people report how drakes can be... maybe depends on the breed - a bit like roosters !

    Great video and lots of good info. We rescued 10 in total; 2 blue Swedes, 4 khakis, 4 brown ones not sure what they are - maybe a variety of mallard’s. One of the Swedes is lame - they were in a 4 x 5 plastic tub. What can I do to do to heal it?? I give them all peas w/brewers yeast. Thanks.

    Drakes will get under your feet a lot and they will nibble on your feet and the cuff of your pants. It is much more mild than an aggressive rooster. It can even be kinda cute at times. Unlike a rooster who is trying to dig his spurs into you.

    We got my granddaughter two kwaki Campbell ducks they are now fully feathered now they are all kwaki colored she thinks they are boys but I think they are girls. How do we tell what they are, she doesn’t want them if they are boys because she is raising chickens and thinks the ducks will kill her chickens if her ducks are boys. I wish I could send you a picture of them to see if you can tell if they are girls or a boy. My daughter and me love those ducks that’s why I need know.

    I need advice from someone who knows about ducks. I live in Ohio. The closest body of water is about 3 miles away. Well, anyway, I have three outside window boxes. In one which is about 9 feet from the ground a duck laid 4 eggs about two weeks ago and has been sitting on them ever since. It seems like a terrible idea. We wonder if we should try to move her and her eggs? Any insight or ideas you may have I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you!

  • @TheLittlePalletFarmhouse

    @TheLittlePalletFarmhouse

    Ай бұрын

    My first question is what sort of duck is it? Unusual for her to be up that high ( unless she is a wood duck?) If she is wild you probably wont have success in moving her and the nest- she will likely abandon it. Are you worried about predators or the ducklings being up high and falling? You could wait until after hatch and then move her with her babies as she will stay with them- that would be best done when its dark at night by transferring her into a dark box with wood shavings in and moving her that way… hope it helps! Good luck

  • @KathyLighthizer

    @@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse I don’t know what kind of duck it is. Not domestic. She is still sitting in her 4 eggs. I think she is very safe from predators but when the babies hatch I am afraid the babies will fall right to the ground and be injured! Coincidentally we have a weekend getaway cottage right on the river about 3 miles from here and that would be the perfect place for them! We will see what the next few days bring! Fingers crossed!

  • @TheLittlePalletFarmhouse

    @TheLittlePalletFarmhouse

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, unless you were there when they hatched they will be imprinted on ducks ( which i think is a good thing) and so building trust with them really is just about time and routine. My kids played a lot with hours as duckings - just sitting in a pen with them but they still don't like being picked up as adults although they will come close and feed by hand if offered. Just keep spending time with them so they get used to your presence.
