They do have their own mind. I found that frozen peas, yep peas. They go nuts for them! Ducks grow so fast that they need extra niacin and peas are loaded with it! I let my ducks and geese out of the pond almost daily and when they see the container of peas they will follow you anywhere!!!! Now since they are already grown it might take a bit to get them used to the peas but believe me they will get there. I always say the same thing when I give it to them so they will begin to respond to the phrase as well as the peas. They also LOVE meal worms. Those are a bit expensive but if you start growing them at home it is fairly easy. I totally love my waterfowl. They are so funny and believe me they are smart too! Also when they realize how good peas are the kids can feed them out of their hands. You will never have a problem getting them to listen to you again. Sorry a little long winded but a lot of info. I started off feeding my ducklings peas and now they won't eat anything else. I think they've become addicted!!

I stuck 13 eggs under a broody Muscovy. A raccoon got one, but the other 12 hatched. That Muscovy hen had the babies out by day 2 of hatching; swimming, foraging, being ducks. She's VERY protective, too.

I like the way you have presented your video, you kind of took us to a tour, a point which many people fail to make when making videos such as yours. Thanks for your tour.

I have Jumbo Pekin, they seem to have a sweet disposition, and pretty laid back. They are usually not "chatty" unless I'm out there. The eggs I get from them are just a bonus ^_^

This was really great! Few people talk about what they learned in hindsight and I’ve read everything there is on raising ducks out there. I have 8 Welsh Harlequin ducklings now and this is helping me make future decisions on them.

That baby’s giggle about the greens had me like awwwwwww❤😂

My fiance and I just recently got a flock and absolutely adore them. The expectation versus reality was mind boggling! We are still working out the kinks but our Peking teenagers are doing great! ❤️ much love and appreciation for the tips!

I cut their wing when they are just 1 week old

Oh yes to keep the mud down I use leaves & pine shavings. Makes great compost for future plants.

I loved this! Good to learn from our good and bad right? I've only had a few ducks as pets mostly and we've lost them to predators... now we're keeping them more contained. The submersible heaters work well, I hope you had good luck last winter with them.

Thank you for your personal opinions, had ducks w/chickens in a protected barn coop guarded by llama before, but this time it’s so different with only a chicken coop, run and electrical fence area on our smaller ranch. So it’s a different experience and your ideas and downfalls were very helpful.

Love khakis and Indian runners, my absolute favorite breeds.

A lot of this is good advice for beginners with ducks, but I’ve had ducks for a while and I’ve noticed some things. My ducks are In with my chickens and turkeys and they all get along fine. I have a big pond that I built for the ducks and they love that, but like she said small pools will work. I put my food on the ground and they eat almost all of it throughout the day so you don’t really have to worry about it rotting if you know how much to feed them. They’re easy animals to take care of, and as long as you have a basic understanding of what they need you’ll be fine.

If your freezing water situation didn't improve, something you may check into is a way to keep the surface moving. Wild waterfowl keep small amounts of lakes from freezing by constantly swimming in it and it becomes their roost. A small marine bilge pump with a hose pushing water to the surface might work. However, the more shallow it is the harder this will be. Putting the pool into the ground will help and you could also use the bilge to pump out the water for changing.

Good choice 👍 2 pekin ducks will do good job with Khaki Cambell in the same flock. Khaki will not be so fast with Pekin ducks in the same flock.

I got my first Khaki Campbell ducklings for Easter as a gift from my father a while back, I had had ducks before and was so excited to take care of them but felt a bit dissociated from them after some of my older ducks got in an accident. Now I know that they are both females and are going to be mamas in a few days! They can be a bit mischievous, especially because they are broody and one HATES water even though she is waterfowl but they are both bundles of joy.

What a great, informative, video. Thank you. I'm hoping to start with ducks next year and your tips will be very helpful. I'm planning on Appleyard ducks, though, instead of Khaki Campbells.

where did you get them?

It’s easy to know how to raise ducks. Just eat what a mom duck does in the wild. The babies are swimming and foregoing outside at one day old. Eating grass and water plants and critters comes naturally.

This video has been really helpful since a found a khaki Campbell Duckling in my backyard! Ik exactly how to help him live a good life!

The water in that pond will make them sick - here in so flo we have muscovy ducks & its hot - l have a suggestion thats better than a baby pool - easier to dump & change their water - at home depot or lowes the sell hard black plastic tubs for mixing cement - MUCH easier to dump & refill with fresh water - l know it wont stay clean long - it uses less water too - we gave up on baby pools because its hard to tip & empty they want to bend frm weight of water -we love these they work so much better - try it lm sure youll love it for your ducks ☺👌👍💗

We wrap our run with heavy plastic during the winter ro wind proof it and ha e no issues with water freezing and we only set the waterer on a seed starter heat mat. I live in northern maine so we get extreme cold for weeks at a time with severe wind. Ita may 8th an still only 30 degrees at night.

What heating plate/ lamp would you suggest ?

I just started with Muscovy ducks and they are neat ducks. They get huge and are fun to have around. I am not going to eat them, I just like them around. And Muscovy fly real well.

hello I have also 190 plus khakies but I'm facing problem of hatching results . plz help

I put pavers in our kennel, on a slight slope, so when I rinse it off with the hose it drains well. This keeps the smell way, way down and keeps their nails trim...:-) I also put a plastic dog door on the small barn and the ducks go in and out by themselves, saves on the heating bill in the winter..:-) I also put a $10. full length mirror, hung horizontal and low on the inside wall...:-) In the winter, I've been putting cedar chips on top of the pavers since the pavers get so cold. Hay is a nightmare to cleanup and retains odor, and cedar chips, for dogs, breaks down and makes the outside kennel smell nice. I don't use it inside their barn. This winter I'm putting down outdoor large carpet mats I found at Home Depo., that have rubber on the backside and outdoor carpet on the front side, and can be hosed off in the spring...:-) Their similar to the large floor mats department stores have at that entrances. Anyway, I enjoyed your video...:-) I recently purchased six fertilized eggs for my duck, and they just hatched! I found them on Craig's list, so you really don't need a Drake...;-)

Buy a bucket cut an oval and re fill the water every day water is outside No water in the coop this way the ducks stay clean very clean and easy.

Guy has a vid about water...has small water bucket like thing...ducks stick head thru wire thing...no mud etc.... good vid..

Hi Carly, From what I've understood from a couple of videos from your youtube "colleague" A Chicken Called Albert, ducklings will sort of "imprint" on the first living thing they meet upon hatching (he explained that one day where he "rescued" eggs and incubated them at home before putting them back in the nest : he had to make sure to drop the nearly hatched eggs in the nest BEFORE they hatch or they would imprint on HIM and would not be accepting the real mother) So I guess if you want "chicks super cuddly to you", you know how you can get some now :)

the funny thing is, my grandma has ducks. when they first hatch everyone is just sooo happy and finds them too cute. after a year when the new ducklings come and the old ones get turned into food we all like them, but in a different way ;D

I got 2 of them they are my favorite duck breeds

I have Muscoy ducks just 2 hens. One went broody so I ordered some Swedish fertilized eggs. Heard they are very sweet and taste ducks. Like to keep 2 females the rest will be harvest. Then I don't want anymore ducks.

Use straw (7 inches thick) in the ground to prevent them turning it into such a mud bath, and keep the water to one corner of the inclosure. I haven’t watched your update video so I’m not sure what’s changed, just sharing for others. We feed our appleyards every night and give them five minutes to eat whatever they want, until you can see their gizzard, when they’re done we put it away, it prevents a lot of waste

Curious if you could do an update more specifically focused on cold weather problems and solutions, how well they fair, etc. We live in canada and currently still have 2ft of snow in our yard. We have ducks too, just not campbells. Would like to see what changes you have made in the last year. cheers.

Andrew Kalyn Hey there, you bet! I need to get back to making videos! 😜 This winter we abandoned our heated buckets because the wind continuously froze them over. We invested in a K&H Pet Products Thermo-Duck Waterer. It’s shaped like an egg and has little spots for them to dunk their heads. It worked amazingly well this winter, never froze up. And kept the pen way cleaner. Then we just refilled buckets as we could, on sunny warmer days. They’d freeze up but the ducks could enjoy some deeper dipping before they froze. :) We also did not do any straw bedding or deep litter this winter. We only kept wood shavings in the coop itself. It encouraged them to only lay in the coop and the outside pen was totally fine without litter. I liked this system a lot better this year, it made a lot less work and mess for us and the ducks seemed happier. :) Hope that helps.

Also, khaki campbells are some of the best winter loving ducks. They do great. We live in a very windy, snowy valley and they do great. Having windbreaks and a good shelter for them helps a lot. They are tough birds! :)

Chain link lots are good for when the ducks are full grown, you can get a dog house so they can sleep at night/ lay their eggs. When they are babies Totes work well for a few weeks but when they get bigger you can make a simple lot from rabbit wire so they can’t get out

They didn't follow you around like momma because you didn't handle them enough and spend enough time with them. It has to be daily for a good amount of time and it has to be for a couple months AFTER they are old enough to go outside, that is enough to set it. I used to let my baby ducks follow me around doing outside chores.

We handled them constantly and did everything with them when they were babies and beyond. Khakis just don’t have that personality. When I come out of the house they call for me and love when I bring them treats (daily!) and quack away for me to come give them attention. Then they are over it. :) they aren’t cuddle buddies.

My duck is very cuddly… he follow me all the time and sleep on my belly… it is in their nature!

Ur so true we are about to have ducklings in 3 days and me and my dad set up the brooder and it already STINKS

I wouldn't recommend chicken wire. Predators will pull that apart pretty quick. Use hardware cloth for the fencing.

DO a video on heated water sources. I put wind breaks around my heated waterers. FWIW I put insulating rubber under all of my water sources.

Hi Carly, I don't know if you would be kind enough to answer me but I have a question for you. We got 2 little ducklings, they are about two weeks old right now. One of them is constantly nibbing/biting on the other's neck. The poor little guy has almost no feathers left, so we seperated them for a time. Now they are sad that they do not see each other. I noticed that one of your ducks had a bloody neck at a point in the video, so I thought maybe you experienced something similar. Any advices for me?

Thanks! I’m scrambling to learn all about ducks because I found three babies abandoned today there was no mother around all day so some boys help me catch the 3... Two died within no time😥🥺😭 One had been hurt by another duck down at the pond when I tried to reunite them the duck tried to drown him ! I thought it was a mom because it was the only female duck and I was horrified what she did I almost jumped in the pond but she luckily swam away when I yelled at her I felt so bad that I had put him in a situation and he got hurt from the other duck. The two that didn’t make it were both wet and scared and I didn’t know what to do so I had them in my sweatshirt and put them in a box while I got everything ready and I think they were just too cold I didn’t realize they had to be so hot and I didn’t know what was most important to get them food or set up a little place for them or learn what I needed to d!!! so anyway I have one left and he’s doing really good .... He ate some dog food and some watermelon and some bread and some bok choy and I’m going to order him some chicken starter food and some bedding but right now he’s just in a Tupperware bin with a doggy heat mat underneath it and I keep making sure it’s warm enough by turning the heater on next to him for a little bit he seems to be doing good he’s pretty funny too he was sleeping on my neck earlier. he ate some dog food and some watermelon and some bread and some bok choy and I’m going to order him some chicken starter food and some bedding but right now he’s just in a Tupperware bin with a doggie heat mat underneath it and I keep making sure it’s warm enough by turning the heater on next to him for a little bit he seems to be doing good he’s pretty friendly to he was sleeping on my neck earlier. but it’s still the first night and I watch so many videos and a half wait read articles that don’t tell me what I need to know so thank you for doing this I really really appreciate it

We have talked about getting ducks. We have 50 chickens right now and we also have a pond. I am so worried that they will leave and not want to come back. We have 16 acres and the pond is not close to the coop.
