Uncle Larry rolls up on some Indian food tinged country music and comes up with a crazy new groundbreaking idea for KZread.
If you like the idea of having your golf swing analyzed by a pro golfer and all of his students, then this episode is for you

That’s the concept, I’ll put up a couple episodes of other people doing it, we will see how it goes. It might be cool and it might be a total goat fuck, we shall see. I know one thing, like my dear old granny used to say… “If you never try anything crazy and new shit gets boring real quick” All you married guys out there can relate to that

Offbeat story: The Beat poet Lew Welch disappeared into the California wilderness in 1970, carrying a gun and leaving behind a suicide note. Nothing of him has been seen since. He left behind a lover and her son by another man, Hugh Anthony Cregg III, to whom Welch became a stepfather. Hugh Anthony Cregg III is better known as Huey Lewis.

I always loved Chris Hayes playing as well. Such tasteful riffs and always placed perfectly. Keith Scott from Bryan Adam's band and Mike Campbell from the Heartbreakers are like that as well... they weren't (aren't) shredders, but their phrasing is always so amazing. They say a lot with very few notes.

Singer I used to work with Dave Robinson ("Dancin' in the Moonlight" singer, since passed, totally awesome voice) roomed with Huey, they also traveled with some of the Beach Boys in a Yatch Sailboat in the Caribbean and did gigs under a different name which I forgot the name now, pretty cool. They put out some albums too. There's a video of Huey & Dave on KZread but Dave couldn't sing well anymore. I'm unschooled in playing yet I've been gigging for almost 60 years. I dont know a thing about music on paper but I managed to gig all those years. I play from feeling not scales and all that. It just comes out of me, cant explain. I toured with a Show Band for years in the 70's. Then played from tiny bars to festivals. Im retired now due to poor health and my whole body is about wore out. Online lessons sounds like an awesome idea though. I wish I knew more, even now. Its been a Ride... Good Luck with that lesson thing, sounds cool .

Man. I TOTALLY agree about “Do You Believe In Love?” by Huey Lewis & The News. Holy Moses…that song does indeed rock and the lead vocal kicks and as you mentioned…the harmonies are totally insane, especially the HIGH harmonies. They all had the chops for exquisite harmony singing…heavily Doo-Wop influenced-which you can hear to great effect on “Bad Is Bad” for example. I do know that their great saxophonist Johnny Colla arranged the harmonies though I’m not certain who handled the really high stuff. Interesting side note which relates to the great Ann Wilson whom I know you rightly hold in high regard…Johnny Colla sang backing vocals with Ann and Nancy along with Mickey Thomas (yep, of Starship and Elvin Bishop fame) on key tracks from the mega-hit 1986 ‘Heart’ album which included “Nothin’ At All” and Bernie Taupin’s “These Dreams”!

Speaking of fire, our band in the 90s worked for over two years playing and selling everything from shirts to weed, working odd jobs in places we played etc, to get nice crystal clear sounding equipment and we lost everything in a bar fire except a fiddle and a couple of guitars. Arson. My drums were a big puddle of melted cymbals stuck to drum rims. I had nice mics and a big Fender powered monitor, two more monitors the others used, a mixer, huge bag of backup cords, parts, drum heads, 30 pairs of sticks, a new 58 Beta vocal mic I was proud of, and my new coat stuck inside the bass drum. I remember one of the guitar players trying to find the metal pieces of his guitar. PS: I love that YES album. I remember.

Hey, Tom! Thank you for the tidbit of info on Huey & his News. I feel like so many of the younger aged folks don’t know a lot of the music from the 80s that really were staples of the era. They all know Journey & VanHalen & even Pat Benatar but many have never heard the Sports album! Which is crazy to me!! Like you stated, nearly every one of those were hits! That doesn’t always mean much, but in this case it’s worth a listen, if never heard before. (Just my opinion)(Which carries nothing but my 50 years of enjoying music & appreciation of the musicians & others who make it!) Also, Wipeout (as one of your recent videos highlighted & informed us of Marshall’s talent show number that brought the house down!😉) might be a fun one to try on this beauty of an instrument?! Supposedly Huey Lewis band before the News was the sh@t. I believe they were called Clover. John McFee, now of the Doobie Brothers, was the guitar player. They played on My Aim Is True the debut Elvis Costello record. Just a little FYI if you’re not hip. Have a great weekend. Much love from NC.

Larry, a few years ago (around the beginning of corona lessons) I was looking for reasonable pickups to replace the stock ones in a cheap japanese tele. Stumbled across an old email you sent to van zandt pickups praising them for a set you had in a cheap japanese tele you picked up on ebay. Needless to say, I bought them immediately and they transformed the guitar, but I just wanted to know if you remember that guitar and what happened to it. I've been curious ever since. The video you posted the other day about your instrument collection reminded me to ask. Great idea about the lessons btw. Thanks for everything!

Hey, Tom, the opportunity to have one of the finest guitarists in the business give real, honest evaluations is astounding. And for me, it was clear, its not "free". ....so, time to start saving.
