Homeskoolin’ Bonus “On The Job....(Analog Version)"
Ойын-сауық
Uncle Larry plunkin' on his old '59 P bass in his natural habitat once again...
ya' know come to think of it, I've actually had that old bass longer than 95% of my other instruments, i remember buying that thing back in 2007, right after getting booked on a very lucrative Faith Hill tour haha.
Working at one of my alltime favorite studios all week, Reel Recording in Nolensville TN, a magical place that was conceived, built and operated by the one and only Shannon Forrest.
Mr. Forrest is an absolute genius, current drummer of Toto and formerly of Steely Dan and Mike McDonald.
The boy is an expert on 2” tape machines and cool analog gear in general, and one of the finest recording engineers in the world...the sounds he gets in his place are simply fucking unBELIEVABLE, for lack of a better word.
You may remember we cut the whole Plexi Soul record there years ago.
When you work at Shannon's place you are taken back in time, hearing the sound of real analog tape machines and using giant racks full of the OG hardware versions of all the legendary pieces of outboard gear that all these plug ins that people use nowadays are modeled after.
It's just the coolest shit ever, and not only does Shannon REALLY know how to operate all that vintage gear, the boy knows how to fix all of it too.
A true renaissance man...i would be afraid to find out what his IQ actually is.
I literally cannot find the words to describe how good that old analog tape sounds when you are standing there at that beautiful old SSL console.….it’s still the best sounding shit I have ever heard to this day. The shit that it does to drums and guitars is just magic.
I'm producing a record out there all week for a dear gal from Rochester named Kathy Wilson.
Got a smokin little combo together consisting of Shannon on drums…Jerry McPherson, John Shanks and myself on guitars and basses....and sweet Timmy Lauer on keys.
Lots of fun.

I've noticed if somebody has a question about the video it usually means they didn't read the description 😂 most KZreadrs don't put a description that's how we were trained to ask questions
Odd to think that four years ago I didnt know of Tom Bukovac and now he is my favourite Uncle connecting thousands of Skoolers across the world. A true gift

Beautiful song! Cant wait to hear that complete. Great direction, Mr. Bukovac!
yes love this behind the scenes studio shit
Really love these fly on the wall peeps into studio time. I’m in construction, I spent an entire season putting up stages rigging for various bands and festivals. Best bit for me was watching them sound check, watching them get every drum violin what ever was needed . Those guys were so interesting to talk to. . That whole music vibe was very cool. Same taste here. Sublime.
Hearing the tape machines in the background is music in itself. Awesome stuff Uncle Larry.
This arrangement/instrumentation is gorgeous
So impressed by your communication abilities in the studio, man. Thanks for all these generous videos!

Bless the Lord... reading that line-up thrills me to no end. Being in the room with y'all via Uncle Larry Cam is a beautiful thing, thank you Brother Tom 🖤⚡️

Tom, it's so cool to see a pro show us how it's done behind the scenes. This is gold man. Thank you so much for taking the time to share this. Cheers
I dig the tune / production a lot and wow that studio is the reel deal. Rewind sounds like a jet taking off. Thanks for letting us be a fly on the wall.
Kathy has a great voice! I really enjoy and appreciate seeing you in the producer's chair Tom and killing the bass here as well!
This is my favorite kind of video that you make. I enjoy watching you at work. You have great ears for picking up parts.
Kathy Wilson, good on you, chasing/living the dream! In the studio with Larry and his talented friends. Nicely done!
Gorgeous song!
This right here is one of the best things you do on this channel Tom! Thank you for the sights and sounds behind the scenes!
Tom, thanks for taking us into the studio. I always enjoy the behind the scenes stuff. And I have to say, that song is killer. I think Kathy Wilson has a bright future!
Man I LOVE an old P-bass!! Only thing better is 2” tape!! Lol! I took it for granted growing up interning in a studio with a killer old tape machine. You’re ABSOLUTELY right!! Nothing sounds like 2” tape. The best tonal medium that man has yet to create. Thanks for sharing!

Right On! Makes sense to me my friend seeing the sound recording off a 2' tape reflects the same sound dynamics natural to human ear AKA "analog sound." 🙉 Some people feel the sound quality they hear in digital sound has a clear & cleaner sound to the ear, which may be true is some cases. However, they're mistaken to think that analog sound isn't more pleasant to the ear when listening to their favorite jams! No bout a doubt it, cuz there's definitely a difference if they just really sit down & listen for it, ya dig? 🤔 Just saying... +Peace & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul My Friend+ 🤘😜🤘
Man, thanks for sharing. The sausage being made videos are such a pleasure. You seem so happy when you are in the producer/leader position. That was a wrecking crew/Phil Specter burrito with a a sprinkle of JPJ riffs. Tommy
Hey Tom. My dad bought a 1959 P Bass in 1960 from a local music store in Louisville, KY. A few years later he did a show in Nashville opening up for Tennessee Ernie Ford. The bass player for Tennessee was playing through a pair of 1956 Fender Bassman tween 4x10 combos. Turns out he was from Floyds Knobs, IN just across the bridge from Louisville. My dad bought one of them from him. So I still have the 59 P Bass and the 56 Bassman. Very cool. In fact when Stevie Ray recorded In Step his guitar tech called me and tried to buy the Bassman from me but my dad wouldn’t sell it. My dad passed in 2012. I’m glad I kept both of them. The bass and amp are both mint. Glad to see you playing yours.
To be able to see and hear the creative process is pure magic!!!! Thanks Tom!!!
Love it!! I could watch hours of this. Thank you for sharing with us. Also love the detailed description, which I always read btw!
Tremendous insight. Very thoughtful of you to share this with us. Thank you.
Very cool to see those studio sounds dialed in in real time. That's a room full of incredible ears. You guys nailed it!
This is dope! would love to know when this record is out 👍🏼
Hell yes!! and the spooling of that tape is amazing to hear.
So interesting to see a bit of the recording process. It sounds great!
Absolutely Beautiful Uncle Larry!!
Simply amazing.
A fantastic sounding track. Thank you for sharing!
Very cool! Thanks for allowing us into the inner sanctum and creative process, along with very talented people. Beautiful!
Bass players everywhere celebrate Uncle Larry laying down that pocket 😏
They LAW that’s a gorgeous noise!! Thanks for taking us along!
That was f”ing awesome. Felt like a fly on the wall and got swept up in the moment there…. Super cool man and sounds GREAT! Thank you for that super rad little moment Larry!
That's a beautiful sounding bass!
So cool to see how it works behind the scenes....and yeah.....loved the rewind!
Night Skool, class is in session!!! Thanks for this!!
I love how you guys communicate! _"Can you do that thing, you know, that blrp blrp blrp, like you have a towel on the strings? You know what I mean!"_ Oh, by the way: _"When you work at Shannon's place you are taken back in time, hearing the sound of real analog tape machines and using giant racks full of the OG hardware versions of all the legendary pieces of outboard gear that all these plug ins that people use nowadays are modeled after."_ talk about a kid in a candy store... And this is your job?!?! Thanks for sharing this. Makes me feel like I'm there, watching you guys having fun, which is very cool!
Wow! Lovely song!
12 years ago we were gigging "live bands all day" (all 2 of us LOL) at a large new campground. We had just gone on, and in the first or second tune, and my phone blows up. After 10 or more times I found a moment to look. My wife had stopped at a yard sale. Their was a bass there that their kid had left when he moved out many years ago. My wife said they wanted $200 for it. I looked at the pics, it was a Fender P-bass, Custom Shop w/all appropriate CS markings! I said, pay the man and get it in the car ASAP! All she had left was $146. They took it, and she had it! Beautiful burst, Custom Shop, fretless bass!! I never pulled the neck to check date, it played so perfect! Nobody else wanted it, they thought w/missing frets it was broken! I went back to the older peoples house 10 days later and told them what it was. I also told them if I ever sold it I would give them 1/2 of what I got over $146!! It's not for sale!! LOL My other one is a converted ES type body w/fretless neck. Yuck! LOL That one is a backup now. When I loose the coin toss for playing bass, I have a nice one to do it with!! Sorry so long 8( Peace --gary
That was cool Unc; thanks for the big share. 💪 🎸
I really love these snippets showing music being born. Its the same jam that made "Get Back" so endlessly fascinating (though here you don't know how the story ends). Thanks Tom 🙏
Bells for the win…..textures……dig it
The sound of the tape rewind is amazing!! It sounds like a jet engine getting ready for take-off! Thanks again, Starship Trooper!!
Uncle Larry and Shannon doing some analog shit.....I'm a happy man...
HomeSkookin Field Trips are the Grooviest! I watch every Uncle Larry Video with an "empty cup". THANKS BUK!!!
Definitely thanks for the write up. Very very cool.
Thanks for sharing!
Hero work. Well done, Buk!
Really brought back memories with the sound of that 5:00 that 2 inch analog rewind. I spent much of the late 70’s through the late 90’s working with 2inch Ampex 456 in the studios around Los Angeles area. When I heard that tape in rewind I can almost smell the tape. Thanks for posting the live session. Track sounds great!
Love the song, very Flaming Lips, gorgeous.
This like being in a Time Machine. Incredible sounds. ❤
Yeah thanks for the description ! That was a diamond plucked from a gold nugget right there
The sound of tape just makes us giddy like kids in a hobby/toy shop. Thanks Uncle.
I’d watch a 3 hour livestream of this! Thanks, Tom
Uncle Larry, thank you for busting out your badass P bass, the Evil Twin DI, & sharing this session video with us. Getting to see you produce the track and working with Shannon & the fellas is great. That dude is crazy cool too. Just like you.
Analog 2” tape and SSL = magic. You’re inspiring me to get my old 1/4” 2track master machine going again! Cheers.
Great song. Wow
Great stuff for us students UL! That bass is magic. Producers and engineers love the old P bass since it rarely needs a love of extra attention in the mix, as you aptly proved here. Oooh, that tape machine gave me chills like a dentist drill. Just the frequency Kenneth...
Thank you 🎉🎉🎉❤
nice work!!
Been a minute since we were in the studio. Fun stuff!
Gonna enjoy this on a rainy summer-like night, studying truths and lies of sound through the words of a master player. Cheers to everybody!
Rockin Uncle Larry! Hello from Florida my brother ✌
Yeah man! Love that tape!
Beautiful song and nice work on the fat strings Larry.
Damn, that’s beautiful.
The Sound of Analog is Real Music. Pure emotion
I feel like all Homeskoolin is a bonus... thanks as always Uncle Larry
Kathy Wilson from Rochester? I totally played at an open mic with her. So awesome to see! Sounds great Kathy!!

Thank you John! Shannon, Tom, John, Tim, Jerry and Guthrie really are the best of the best! They were so kind to me and they are great guys! We had alot of fun!
Tom in his happy place outside the home and garage!!!! Yes!!!!! Awesome Brother!!
Almost the Homeskoolin band. Funny with Mackey on Guthrie’s channel right now. I thought the first take sounded like a finished record. You guys make it look so easy.
Thanks Man. that was cooler than January.
GREAT bass tone, even thru the phone
⚓️ Thanks Unc 😎
Hearing that tape machine spinning (amongst all the other GLORIOUS sounds) just made me all tingly in my nether regions ❤
Those bells are a nice touch.
sounds great. muggin' for the camera. good stuff.
Great Tom!
That was cool!
That Session Man fella plays a pretty solid bass. Glad that there's still some music being recorded on tape. It has a wonderful warmth to it that is hard to describe.
“Don’t give up” outro in there? Lovely tone n that bass 😎
So cool
Hi Tom, love these sit ins on your producing life, learn so much. You have that fantastic sounding P-Bass, do you also like the J-Bass and which setting would you want which bass? Thanks so very much for taking us along for this marvelous ride.
Just from the first second after 2,3 4 I knew it was great!
BONUS... A Bass Lesson!!! Very tasty, indeed Thanks!
I loved this. Tape? Yeah, remember that.
Love this. When I'm recording, I find bass is one of the hardest things to get to sit in the mix just right. Compression and EQ has to be delicately set. Sometimes I throw up my arms and deselect all the plugins and then... There it is!
Good stuff
Yes more Bass
Cool song! Has that 90’s vibe.

Sounds like a Sixpence None The Richer tune.
You go Uncle Larry, give us that ‘Bass Face’ !!!
That's great to hear that from a Fender Jazz, "That Bass bottom end is so nice" I took one in to a session so many years ago and it wasn't received well. That's cool watching Uncle Larry playing Bass.

its a precision bass man, not a jazz...an old precision works great for everything...jazz basses are too hollow and weird sounding to work for most music.
Thank God I read the description. For a moment I thought you had ditched the guitar to pursue a bass caterer.
I dig it… it’s got a Mazzy Star vibe to it! Great post… thanks for doing what you do!
Just the escape I needed
