Homeskoolin’ Bonus “Dobro Jones”

Ойын-сауық

I will never forget what my dear old grandmother used to say over and over when I was a very young lad..
“Son, all I ask is that you remember me this one thing…if any human being on this earth ever figures out a way to build a round neck resonator guitar that is actually properly intonated, PLEASE promise me you will buy one”
Thank you Paul Beard
Thank you Gruhn Guitars
I swear 3 different times in the last month I have been in the studio and this exact scenario has happened…
Producer: “man a resonator would be fucking killer on this track, did anybody bring one?”
Collective guitar players:
(Sheepishly) “Uhhh…no”
Well those days are over friends
And….do you guys remember a while back when Duke Levine was in town and we were working on a record together?
Well it’s finally out….and Jedd is on it too.

By the way, you are the master of tone. A studio guitarist has to not play 97% of what he knows. The only thing that is left is the quality of the tone, and you have become the master of studio tone. There are so many people copying you now I don't know how long that will last- it is like the 10,000 Brent Masons that are out there now. Surely there will be a Tom Bukavac Quantum computer program with Guthrie and Brian and Brent and every one else soon. Tim is raising the quality of the student so much that the bars are going to be full of studio quality guitarists playing for nothing soon. Where were you guys when I was twelve?

Funny the Wade Bowen detail comes out. We had a short 2 hour road trip this weekend, and I had that new Wade Bowen album on repeat. He’s one of my favorite artists. I met him a few years ago when he was playing at Flannagan’s in Columbus, Ohio with our friend, Eldon Huff. He was so nice, and I got a nice photo with him. Anyway, I told my wife as we were listening that this is my favorite album of his. The songs are all compelling, and the production is awesome. So, I am not surprised at all to hear that you were involved! Nothing but class from Uncle Larry! 👍

In the early 90-ies, I was in some guitar shop in Frankfurt am Main Germany. I was passing by the acoustic guitars boot, and the door was a bit open. Boots were made of glass as well as the doors. You could hear dude playing loud. I thought he was plugged in. I've peeked in, and there was no cable and no amplifiers. Just similarly built resonator guitar. I couldn't believe how loud and clear it was. I did know the sound of Knoplers Dobro, but this was different and just huge. Way more everything and not as middle pronounced as smaller Dobro. I hate to admit that my interest back then was more some superstrat with the Floyd Rose. I needed a way to channel my youth anger 😂 Anyhow, that guitar impressed me a lot. In the meantime, I have played original vintage Dobro from the same year as the Knopflers, and it's an epic instrument. Only not shiny. It had patina. Felt a bit like sand paper. If it was mine, I would go crazy because I couldn't decide to polish it or leave it be. The slide sounds awesome on it. Friend played finger style flamenco on it, and it sounded awesome. I would have never guessed that. It's a unique sounding instrument.
