Homeschool DITL | SAT Prep Update | Thoughts on BJU Lit | Flexing Schedules for Travel Tournaments

Lots happening in this DITL as we prepare to travel for a 3 day basketball tournament! I share about modified schedules/assignments for these weeks, update you on how SAT prep is going/practice exams, and give some thoughts on the HS level BJU Lit curriculum we are using this year.
Apologies that the audio briefly gets a little wonky around the 15 min mark - tried to improve it as best I could

Thanks for sharing. We may try a Literature guide from 7 Sisters this spring to see if we like that better for literature. This year we have used some of the literature choices from our Notgrass World History and The Good and the Beautiful LA program.

For what it’s worth, I have yet to feel like any language arts curriculum is perfect. The struggle is real! I have been using Good and Beautiful as the spine, but added from other sources because I don’t feel it can stand alone. Have you looked at Sharon Watson’s Illuminating Literature? She writes with humor, sarcasm, and a non-textbook and project-based approach. Another option I pick and choose from is the Notgrass History curriculum which has language arts built in. I find it brilliant to walk through literature that lines up with history and it has made the novels more interesting to my own kids. Just some thoughts from another ELA-frustrated homeschool mom.

I have the same thoughts about BJU Literature. My son is going through Fundamentals of Literature this school year. I’m considering IEW Windows to the World for next school year.

I find literature to be a tricky subject to figure out. Next year I'm doing memoria press, using a poem and short story book along with a few books and guides. I'm combining my 8th and 10th grader so we can do it together.

Curious to see what you end up using for Literature. My daughter is a junior and has been using BJU Literature DL since 7th grade and loves it. I need something for my son who that is more than just reading comprehension but I'm not sure that BJU will be as good of a fit for him.

Just found your channel and see German in the background. My daughter really wants to take German. What do you use?

We are using Essentials in Literature. Might be worth looking into. I have also found Teachers Pay Teachers lit guides for American literature as well.

My oldest is using EIL but she’s better at managing her time and adjusting what she does each day. My youngest needs more direction day by day in what to be working on. I am looking into the possibility of finding individual literature guides for novels though. We have used that in the past and may be a good option for him

@@mypracticallyimperfectlifethere must be two different ESsentials in Literature. I just started using EIW’s literature component with my autistic 7th grader who hates reading. I will have to go research that I bought the right one.
