A little Canadian teacher encouragement - I would not sweat the preschool experience you had with Theo ! It is great that he got some exposure to the Alphabet . He is likely more aware of letters than many 4 year olds . So many countries start formal schooling at 7 and the research says that works very well. It sounds like your confidence is growing this area . I think you are doing very well!

Yes! I’ve worked with grade 1 kids who never had preschool or kinder and they got to grade level, so I wouldn’t have worries

My mom homeschooled me through 7th grade, and that experience has served me so incredibly well. I'm homeschooling my own young children now, and we have taken a somewhat more relaxed approach for now, but my oldest is only 4. I look for every opportunity to teach them things throughout regular life, free play, arts and crafts, reading a LOT, regular play dates, and lots of time outside. We also do only slightly more formal lessons once a week for about 30 minutes on the alphabet and numbers, as well as shapes and colors for my 2 year old. I'm really loving it so far. It's fun to see another fresh homeschooler's experience with "official" curriculum. The Good and the Beautiful wasn't around when I was homeschooled, but I've heard a lot of great things about it, and have many friends who use it or have tried it for their kids. Thanks so much for sharing!! ❤ I've followed you for years, so it's really cool to see you starting your homeschooling journey!

I have to tip my hat to you. There is so much work day to day, but to add such a good homeschooling experience to it all is impressive! I know I couldn't do it myself.

Delilah, the phonics-based reading instruction you used for Eloise and now Theo is the gold standard for reading instruction! I'm currently almost finished with my teaching degree in Australia, and letter-sound based teaching is shown to be far more effective and something each teacher is using in their classrooms now :)

We start homeschool pre-school with my oldest this fall. I’m so nervous!!! Thank you for your honesty with what worked and didn’t work. It’s always encouraging to see someone else who doesn’t quite have it all figured out but it all works out in the end.

I totally understand the need to have a prepared curriculum for convenience sake. It’s ok. I started home schooling @ 35 yrs ago. I’m happy to say my 3 girls have the most amazing options available for their use. Every child is different, every mother is different, every period of life we have different needs. Pregnancy, infants, toddlers, and other matters can require a different method and changes regularly as needed. I home schooled 6 children from the Amazon jungle. My kids would tell me that school didn’t have to be fun, it just has to be done.😂😂lol

Thank you for this video! I appreciate the honesty about what did and didn't work. I have a rambunctious 4 year old boy with a short attention span, and i am beginning preschool homeschool with him. I originally thought i would be the homeschool mom that taught beautifully with fun crafts and field trips etc, however, i have learned that i need straightforward learning, and so does my son! We are both naturally artsy and adventurous, so the crafts and field trips are sure to happen, but straight to the point learning is what we both need for daily work. I will definitely be looking into/ordering your recommendations, and i recently got the "how to teach your child to read" book, so I'm glad to hear that it is working!

I’ve had a similar homeschool journey as you and used the good and the beautiful for a while, but had to make a switch to accommodate both my Grade 1 child and PreK child. My search for what works for us brought me to the Steiner- Waldorf approach and our kids are actually excited to learn at home. I don’t get too caught up in the race to teach the kids to read and write by age 4 and love this gentle, childhood friendly approach.

I’m totally the same way with homeschooling! Those casual things just doooo notttt get done. I need things in a book with instructions that don’t require a bunch of supplies. I love the idea of those but it’s not my method of teaching either I’ve learned!

I love this video!! My daughter is only one years old, but I’m always wanting to do my research ahead of time. So I have heard all about the good and the beautiful and I cannot wait to start her on that curriculum.

I was homeschooled growing up and at the beginning of the journey my mom was all on board and super into it just with things that happened in our family. She slacked off a little bit and so it has made me hesitate to want to homeschool if we do have kids and this has been encouraging that it doesn’t need to be difficult it can be simple. You just have to be committed. Thank you for sharing.! ❤

The Good and the Beautiful has been so good for us too! We’re finishing up kinder with my oldest and preschool and kinder prep with my 2nd. I also had my 4th baby in the summer before this school year 😅 and I also wish I was a creative crafty homeschool mom but I also just thrive with the written out lessons and easy structure 🙌🏻 the letter movements are so key for my kids! Fellow Christian homeschooling mama of four here. Love all your videos! We used to do the good and the beautiful as well and loved it, but felt like it was missing something. Went to do a little more research on the good and the beautiful and found that the creator is Mormon. I felt like it just didn’t line up with our beliefs so I went looking for for something better aligned with our family and how we want to raise our children. That is when I heard of generations. You must look this curriculum up. It is so biblically based you will love it. The only downfall is that they don’t have a math curriculum beyond grade 2. My little ones are three, five, 7 and 8 1/2 Love the new bathroom Reno. It is beautiful.

Oh Delilah I can completely relate to this haha! I have one little guy, Ezra, who's 3years old and I ordered the Winter rhythm/curriculum from Little Oak Learning for us this season. It's a steiner based rhythm and I to just CAN'T stay motivated with it at all! We live in Australia and I sucked up the postage costs and ordered TGTB Preschool language arts course and their doodles pre-writing part 1 and it's so much more easy for me to stay motivated with. I'm following Ezra's lead with it as he's still very little but it's so much more easeful for us to follow, and then when I want to do nature walks, nature studies, stories, baking etc with him we just do that when I am motivated to do so instead of those feelings of guilt all the time! It's such a dance homeschooling! I can only imagine the juggle with 4 kiddies! xx

I was in the same sort of life situation with a newborn and starting homeschool with two kids. I really really loved it. I also had a fifth grader and same thing the good and beautiful was so well done and my daughter tested in a private school for middle school and said it was all familiar stuff in the test and she did great! I’m so happy this year went well for you. I would totally recommend good and beautiful for a mom with a newborn and multiples.

I loved this!! I have a 6,5,3 and 1 year old so our lives look very similar with homeschooling and being present for little 💞 I do the good and the beautiful for math for my oldest 2 and we tried their curriculum for language arts for a few years but it took up a lot of our day and my oldest dreaded it but since we stepped back from it he taught himself to read completely on his own. I worked at a Waldorf school and one of my favorite resources for preschool/kindergarten is the brand acorn to oak. They are really amazing and simple and I love to just pick and choose small things from their books to incorporate into our schooling!

It might seem overwhelming right at first but truly it’s super helpful once you get the groove.

People on KZread generally seem much more positive about homeschool. I’m all for it, I’m also homeschooling and if you ever try to post something on Reddit in homeschool forums you get people basically saying how horrible it is for kids, abusive, all these crazy wild negative opinions. I was shocked. Just a note that Good and Beautiful is great for kids who are natural readers. Didn’t work my my child for reading, so we are doing Logocs of English until she’s a great reader and then we will go back to it. I love the boosters though.

I love The Good and Beautiful and used it for a few years when it was new! Best curriculum in my opinion of teaching homeschooling for 11 years to my older kids.

My dad taught me to read with the “100 Easy Lessons to Teach Your Child To Read” when I was 4 and I just turned 30 😂 It worked great for me but my brothers all hated it and it wasn’t their learning style. I hope it works well for your kiddos! We have a copy buried somewhere that I’ll try with my oldest when he turns 4.

My mom taught us with that book too and it worked great for all of us, but by the7th of us ten children she go tired of teaching the same curriculum!😂 So she switched it up a bit for the younger ones.❤

Would recommend you get preschool level for the good and the beautiful. It ties in beautifully with kindergarten prep. Kindergarten prep focuses more on blending letters and vowels. Preschool prep ends with some of that but started with letter phonics.

Totally with you on the teaching style! Need open and go was Using BJU this year with my Grade 2 and Kindergarten students. With a new born baby this was a must! Have you looked into Generations homeschool curriculum? Their reading program is the bible. We are going to be using some from them this year, really excited for it and so far what my kids have seen they love it!

We used Alpha Omega for kindergarten and 10th grade this year. (Yes, giant gap between those kid's 😂) It was pretty good curriculum for my kindergartener, but WAY too much for my 10th grader. I really want to try good and the beautiful for my now 1st grader, I just really really really want to stay away from the screens. I'll definitely be spending some time this summer researching and finding curriculum that works for them.

Logic of English Delilah! For langue arts it’s super super helpful for me. I have 4 and 3 are school age. Levels k 2 4 and I can use the essentials for all three boys!

As a Swede i find homeschooling to be so interesting because it is a foreign concept here because it is illegal. All kids are obligated to go to public or private school. I've always wondered how homeschooled kids will learn about the world from a perspective that is not curated out of the biases of the parents? To me it is so important that you learn about and meet people that are different from you and have differing opinions, cultures and religions to be a well rounded adult. I do like that with homeschooling the kids have a more personalised learning which is helpful. Do they still need to take government mandated tests to make sure they are on track?

It depends on where you live, but in my state in the US we are required to keep a portfolio to track the child's progress and undergo state testing every so often. With homeschooling you are just as capable of learning about different people, cultures, religions, etc, you're just doing it at the child's pace and there is way more opportunity for deeper, one-on-one instruction. At school, a child is mostly surrounded by peers and a set curriculum at a set pace. When homeschooled there is more opportunity to be out in the world and experience the diversity of life naturally and in many different environments, and the curriculum and pace can adapt to the child's interests and needs. ♥

​@@amandatyler yes! And I would add that in school, the child is still subjected to the biases and worldview of their teachers. I would rather raise my children with my own worldview (while still teaching them about others at appropriate times), and not have them subject to the biases of strangers I may morally disagree with.

We use TGATB for language arts as well. Isn't it based on American English? Do they have a Canadian English version? Of course they aren't much different, I imagine you can just add those extra letters when needed. But, just wondering!

I sm so sad that homeschooling is illegal in Germany where I live.. it just doesn't make any sense. I would love to homeschool my daughter.

Because America has so many homeschoolers we have lots of meetups of homeschoolers, private organizations also host sports, art, dance, music classes for children. So many ways to socialize.

We enjoy Masterbooks curriculum 🤗 I love how much it based on God.

I know you’re not asking for advice, but Accelerated Christian Education(A.C.E.) is an INCREDIBLE curriculum for higher middle-high school!! INCREDIBLE. I’m not even sure if it’s available in Canada, but that’s what I did growing up.

At what age would you recommend the preschool curriculum? I have a 2 & 3 year old and think my oldest is ready to start homeschool but would love to have them learning together if possible! Especially since I'm due with #3 in September

Look up homeschooling for toddlers! Home schooling doesn't just mean learning with workbooks, but instead through life! Reading rich books together, helping cook, fold clothes, sorting items into colours, building blocks, nature walks, play dough, painting. This is how a toddler is educated! How lovely is that 😊 In answer to your question, preschool generally is around 4 years old and then kindergarten around 5 (but this depends on your child!). Charlotte Mason doesn't recommend any school at all until 6 years old. I have started both my children preschool at 4 and both are avid readers around 6 and love learning so far! We loosely follow Charlotte Mason's approach to learning if you are interested in researching 😊

Try abc Jesus loves me the free curriculum. It starts at 1 and I just choose what to do according to our capabilities and tod's interest that week. The books you can youtube and screenshot if you want. We aim for 3days a week, but it's so flexible.

I recommend book lists from ambleside online and Beautiful Feet curriculum for its simplicity and how inexpensive it is. (Homeschooled about 30 years). Thoysands of childrwn have learned to read with 100 Easy Lessons. It's a classic.

So glad you posted this! I’ve been looking for a good preschool curriculum for my daughter and I think All About Homeschool is going to be a good fit for her. PS my oldest daughter wasn’t loving 100 easy lessons so we switched to Good and Beautiful (K) when we were on lesson 50. Such an easy transition!
