Homer goes to College

Naptime at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant is interrupted by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which is conducting a surprise inspection and employee audit. Homer's skills are tested and not only is he found to be incompetent, he causes a nuclear meltdown. The NRC inspectors demand that Homer either take college courses to obtain the necessary credentials or else Mr. Burns will face criminal charges. Burns gets Homer enrolled at Springfield University, where he acts like an immature adolescent. When he continues to act like a know-it-all in physics class, the professor has enough and asks him to demonstrate a proton accelerator; Homer causes another meltdown. Homer is asked to hire a tutor, and does: nerds Benjamin, Gary and Doug. Instead of applying himself, Homer sees the three nerds have no social life and decides to teach them how to party. He get's them expelled. In a scheme to get them re- admitted, Homer runs over the Dean with the intention of the nerds pushing him out of the way before he gets hit. The plan fails, the Dean get run over and admitted to Hospital.

I love the central premise of this episode that Homer's entire conception of college is based on bad 70's and 80's movies.

In those earlier episodes, Homer is culturally stuck in the 70s -- think of the car he designed, with shag carpeting and tail fins. Or his claim that rock music reached its peak in 1974. And even back then Homer didn't go to college, all he knows about college life is over the top stuff like Animal House and the li ke. By the time he actually goes to college, it's the late 90s and the Dean is a laid-back guy who used to play bass with the Pretenders. And with no squares to rebel against, college students have no need to be rebellious.

Bitterman is definitely a stereotype of the miserable uptight deans in those raunchy 1980s college movies like "Porky's" and "Revenge of the nerds", and is exaggerated for comic affect. And the very easy going, "just one of the students type", very understanding Dean at the college Homer goes to is a signal that shows how real life deans aren't as miserable and uptight as movies make them out to be, but Homer's dean's niceness is also exaggerated for comic affect. Real life deans are probably somewhere in-between Bitterman and the cool, chill Dean at Homer's college.

This episode was way ahead of it’s time. This episode Literally shows the personality and attitude of how generations or college kids are today. Like most of those college kids act exactly like how the younger generation or college kids act today. More educated, good behaved attitude and empathetic and more aware of their health and well-being, which is a really good thing ngl. But the downside is they don’t know how to have fun or be wild because they take everything to seriously or cannot enjoy abit of fun.
