Homemade Wing Chun - Mook Jong Dummy

Here is a brief video of how I made a Mook Jong dummy for free with a bunch of scrap I had laying around the homestead. Enjoy!

very very late to the party, but first - great job and video. Their is one important feature that was not included in your dummy however. the arms need to be able to move in response to strikes. they need to give. the dummies should be (imo) used primarily for accuracy and precision of strikes, not for "strength or speed" as many might think. by allowing for the arms and leg to give, you can assess whether or not your technique is correct. also, "proper" wooden dummies generally have the slots made so that the arms can be rotated to vary this amount of play. But otherwise, really a great job! hats off to you !

Never too late to the party and you are absolutely correct. Over years of use, the arms have loosened up and become more "responsive." I keep them in place with zip-ties which makes the length slightly adjustable as well. Love the suggestions made here, so I am pinning this comment. You can also check out our "follow-up" video from last year here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/rHl2vMGdhdq_nJs.html

Untrue. the arms and leg do not have to give. The old wooden men were posts set in the ground, And the arms and leg firmly hammered in. They had zero give. The new dummies (made when Yip Man moved to Hong Kong) were designed to be easily taken apart when moving apartments. So tolerances were looser. They also could not be set into the ground(due to apartment life), so stands were invented. The wooden man is for training techniques at full power, without having to worry about injuring or killing your training partner. They are meant to be hit, full force, and full speed. If a wooden man is delicate, then is is just wrong.

Love the video. Something quick, easy, very inexpensive. It is not over thought. Nor does the average person's need to have a tool shop, or wood shop to do all the work. Awesome.

It's the first time I've seen a genuine homemade dummy made from spare bits. Too many videos have things "hanging around" that would cost a fortune in B&Q plus hundreds of £££ worth of power tools. Well done!

Thank you for the kind comment! Yep, you will find on my channel that I everything I do is "on the cheap" as we say around here. Nothing fancy, just piecing together old bits of this-and-that and having a creative mind. I am always on the lookout for spare parts and things that I can work into something new (and different). The dummy in this video is almost two years old now and still looks like the day I made it. I have had a ton of people wanting to buy it off me every time they see it. It was a great project and I use it at least 3 times a week (working it into my other workouts). Thanks for watching!

I have an actual Mook Joon from China. The arms to this homemade dummy is too far wide. The idea on wing chun is efficiency and economy of movement. Those arms represent the deficiency of space much like the deficiency of this countries government spending. Wide and far in between!!!

I had a mental concern about the the dowel rods myself. However, breaking a 1.5-2 in dowel rod is difficult, and they can be replaced fairly cheaply. Suggest a a waterproof stain to lengthen the time between arm breakages.

I've had a look through a few DIY designs for Muk Jong, and I have to say I'm really impressed. Well done! Your dummy actually looks comparable to professionally made dummies, (In terms of function, not aesthetics - but what self-respecting Wing Chun beginner cares about aesthetics, anyway?!) **and** it's a huge money saver. There's one video called "How to make a Homemade Wooden Dummy for about $30" - I cringed so~ hard at the design (the two top arms were parallel rather than pointing at an angle), even his rambling was cringey, and I'm probably even less experienced than him!

I can't stand videos that tell you how to make something cheap and they are either lying or they have that "one item" that is so unique, impossible to find or expensive as hell. I believe in practicality, not wasting money. Even the common man/woman can build an awesome and unique home gym. Also, there is no need to remove anything from your comment. Thanks again. Peace.

Super question! Yes, the tyre does give it a lot of "bounce." To be honest, sometimes too much (it can have a tendency to "walk" across the floor during a vigorous workout. I have added a piece of wood to the from and back (under the tyre) for added stability. I also weight it with sandbags on the side legs/stands if I am going to be using it "higher speed." Thant's for watching and taking the time to leave an awesome question!

I know this video is a few years old. Good work. But the arms are way off. Gonna throw off your positioning. Btw if u are ever able to make one that slides. It's good to have it able to move because when you kick or hit at angle if it slides it shows you are hitting correctly. If it doesn't you're off position and pressure. But again good job in making it yourself.

Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a kind comment. Doing a follow-up video is a GREAT idea. I use this thing about 4 times a week (note, I made this back in 2016), and it is still going strong. I could include some specific details about dimensions, angles and my overall impressions after 3 years of use. I'll drop a link here as soon as I get it done (might be by the end of the week). Peace.

I just picked an angle that worked best for the size of the post and for what worked for me. I have had several people tell me its "wrong," but they fail to offer a solution (or show their own) so I discount their opinion. This update video here goes into more detail about the measurements: UPDATE - Homemade Wing Chun - Mook Jong Dummy kzread.info/dash/bejne/rHl2vMGdhdq_nJs.html

if you want proper arm angles, they should be more forward facing than you have them. if the one on the bottom represents the center line than the other top arms should be slightly canted off a few degrees and also, offset, meaning not at the same vertical height but staggered one on top of the other.

  • @AE86Trueno701

I used a "paddle bit" and a drill. The paddle bit was that same diameter as the arms. Paddle bits can be tricky to use, but once you get it started int the wood, is drills the hole very fast. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment!
