Whenever a lock is branded "unpickable", I immediately want to see the Lock Picking Lawyer have a shot at it. Although in this case, branding a non-locking latch "unpickable" is very funny.

55 years ago I was a ‘design cost engineer’ for Ford Motor Company preventing our designers from over engineering. I think I would have had a bonus month with this one, but I thoroughly enjoyed this. Best regards. Ron.

So you were one of those responsible for all the cheap parts that were under-engineered (read: cheapest possible to increase Ford profit) that broke typically 1 week after warranty or in our case 1 year after new purchase; steering gear box locked up during a turn, yeah never bought a Ford again! Thanks for all your efforts to increase Ford's bottom line (profit) but provide customers with terrible reliability.

@@physicsguybrian No this is not true, they can only do so much and have much say in the design. Ultimately it's up to the big guys who decide what stays or goes based on cost and time. It's Fords fault in a whole that they had problems with certain parts that caused lots of problems. For the most part Ford is a really good company that make quality vehicles. These past few years have pushed all companies to do things they should not have to in order to cut cost and labor. I see it in my business and it's killing everything across the board! The ultimate problem is our dependence on China for everything! We need to learn how to make our own products again with our own people, parts, materials and money!

@@ClearWaterPumpWell It's not just reliance on foreign manufacturing and imports. It is bad economic and structural decisions motivated purely by pennies and stock prices. So basically there's this terrible practice of eliminating "overhead". Means they try to fire every worker and refuse to stock any extra screws until they stop functioning. People and things really get squeezed on. The only problem with this is that the most minor hiccups, even someone having the hiccups, makes everything buckle. Nothing has pushed them to cut cost and labor and embrace this brittle ess and fragility except for shareholders with rigged laws designed to guarantee profit at the expense of a company's health and product quality. That and ceo bonuses too. What I'm saying is that corporate greed is the single most harmful thing to any major company in the US. Also this practice is called "just in time" manufacturing and there are examples of businesses that did not suffer majorly from shortages precisely because they did not practice the worst version of this where back up stock is non existant. Ford's misfortunes are their own and paid for by everyone else.

And there's just a great satisfaction every time you use a well-working thing you made yourself. In my workshop I have a paper towel holder that has just the right amount of friction and smoothness when you use it and in addition to being elegantly made of wood and having completely necessary mortise-and-tenon-joinery, it's easy to change the paper towels and the mechanism holding everything is hidden. My gf is probably sick of hearing how awesome it is to use every time I do so, but when you make something that just works really well, you can't help but get satisfaction from it. Such a trivial thing in the end, it just holds a roll of paper towels, but damn if it's not a joy to use when it works so smoothly. Just like the sound of the door closing here. It just feels right.

i Have watched this in the past... and i watched it again after doing all the carpentry work for my newly renovated room because i will be installing a barndoor like door and would be needing a way to lock it . and being able to do anything yourself have its own reward ... people really dont get the satisfaction of being able to say "I did this with my own hands" rather that i bought it or i paid someone to do it for me.

Having watched your videos from day one, I can hear your english is much more fluent now - well done for ALL your efforts - greatly appreciated

Agreed. Not so much fluent in a technical sense, though Marius's English is way better than my... well, anything except English. But it's so natural. When you can have fun with a language, that's when you've mastered it, I reckon - and Marius does just that.

I watch this channel now for about 6 years and it's unbelievable how you developed all your skills (Language, Video, Homeworking, Design) Congratulation to one of the best videos you made!

And yet another "Absolutely Brilliant" creation; from "our" Marius Hornberger. What would we do without you kind Sir? A TRUE "cut" above.

He says relatively simple. Design was way over my head. Absolutely genius. Sure miss these videos on a regular basis

its mechanically simple. it should last a long while, and only need the springs to be replaced when it finally does wear.

The essential maker viewpoint-the journey (design and build and problem-solving) is more satisfying than the destination (having a working door lock). Well done, Marius.

Who needs to buy locking hardware when you can create your own. That was a sweet vid. Awesome work 👍

Designing/overengineering your own solution to a relatively simple problem is so strangely rewarding. The other night I spent a few hours modeling a simple container for my dogs poop-bags, just like the ones that cost like $3 or come FREE with a box of bags. It's just a cylinder with a hole in the middle and a threaded lid with a ring to attach to the leash, and little posts in the bottom of the cylinder/lid to hold the roll in place. It then took ~5 hours to 3D print and works as well as one I could pick up at the dollar store, but I MADE IT GODDANGIT.

Excellent bit of improvised engineering! Two small self adhesive cushions on at the top and one at the bottom of the door to deaden the slam as the door closes to finish.

Outstanding! The handle-into-pull feature is sheer genius. One thought for any future versions (ha!). Mounting the handle rotated 90 degrees clockwise (with other appropriate shape changes) would allow for elbow open when hands are full. (Love our new lever style door handles for that reason.)

That’s a very cool custom “pocket door lock”. The metal plate you made for the frame is called a “strike plate”, and the term for sinking it into the frame is “mortising”. Not trying to be arrogant, just giving you the proper locksmith lingo. Again, great job.

Genius custom design and aesthetically pleasing, too. Really great.

The best part is the joy you get every time you enter the shop.

making as oppose to buying is always a way richer experience. A real shame not everybody has access to time, machinery/tools or materials and most of those who do have it are in most cases just buying what they want.

Oh man wonderful work Marius, I've been mentally mapping how to make door latches in my mind for so long and considering I wanted to make a fully custom door for my own workspace someday. I feel like these are great practice for more mechanically complex projects, low stakes an immediate results with something so picky as door hardware
