Mini DIY shredders are now a reality with our latest SHREDII design. This homemade shredder was tested against wood, plastic, aluminum, steel, and even the indestructible Nokia 3310. This shredder is a great addition to our DIY machine shop, and we use it primarily for recycling 3D prints by taking the granules that come out of the DIY shredder and using them with INJEKTO, our DIY injection molding machine, to create new plastic injected parts.
This SHREDII is designed for use with Nema 34 motors, and in this video we also tested it with more powerful servo motors that we had left over from our DIY CNC and DIY wire EDM machine videos.
We hope this DIY shredder will enable those with minor shredding requirements to continue moving forward with their recycling projects.
GIVEAWAY: Winners will be announced on February 19, 2023 on our community page. Be sure to subscribe so you don't miss out!

    Look awesome so far! During the metal screw test, and the phone test, you can see the blades moving and impinging on each other a bit. Looks like it would be beneficial to work out a way to compress the blade stack! Maybe a shaft collar at either end to lock the blade stack in place, and then set-screws going through the shaft collar to press inwards against the blade stack to provide compression?

    I don't know if this is just me, but I'd seriously want an emergency stop button that kills the power, rather than telling the Arduino to stop. Just because if the Arduino or motor drivers go haywire, or don't respond, the button won't do anything. Most likely not going to happen, but I'd really want something that cannot fail.

    Hi Max, I must say, this is a great idea that is extremely important to implement. In my case I always had someone with me to hit the power switch not shown in the video in case of a disaster, but indeed I agree with you 100% that safety here is imperative. I consider that a Nokia victory... it broke the shredder before getting fully mauled so it's victorious yet again... literal steel nails get rekd and the nokia is just like... meh... put the battery back in and let's see a do-over... I bet the Nokia will make it out with a couple of scratches. That thing is without a doubt absolutely indestructible. I dont see why we need all of these fancy shmansy fighter jets when we have Nokia that can do both electronic warfare AND bunker/tank-busting percision KOs at a high enough velocity, fired out of standard artilery of course... but noooo we need 32 trillion dollars of debt instead. Mount that bitch on a Walmart drone and I bet it could down the F-35. In fact, I am challenging the Russian bots/intelligence officer reading this comment to try it and then give me a reward later when I win them the Ukraine war with this comment. Nuff said.

    I have an idea for the machine key issue: Make the shaft hexagonal. The shaft can still transfer the torque to the blades but the shredder will be more robust as the bigger shaft as a whole is obviously going to be more stress resistant than the smaller machine key. Some Shredder designers have already done this and it definitely worked wonders.

    You can put a grate with .250 holes evenly spaced below the blades. This will make the shread size smaller or larger determined y the size of the holes. But, that would probably work better if the speed was much faster. The grinders we used in plastic had the grates in placed so that we could get consistent sized regrind to be recycled back into our extrusion process. The grates were curved to the diameter of the blades and they had a small gap. So you get a slice effect as the plastic went through the holes.

    Amazing. I need this for a lab application to shred steel turnings. What type of steel are you using in your blade?

    Can the motors detect resistance? If you added some code to the arduino to have them reverse just for a second or two if they get stuck, they might be able to self-dislodge some of those "clogs" like from the Nokia?

  • @ActionBOX

    @ActionBOX

    That’s a great idea. I thought of programming a sequence into the motors that reverses as well but I like this idea better. How would you go about detecting the resistance? The motors only have a current output value that would increase and decrease with resistance on the motors, but this would be true for any sort of load. Cheers

  • @ZacharySkaggs

    @@ActionBOX Honestly I'm not sure...if you can measure the current while the motor is running with a current sensor, experimenting with what that output looks like when the motor seizes to see if it's some kind of consistent/repeatable/triggerable value? It's not something I've done before, just a thought I had watching the video. Thank you for the awesome content!

    Shredders blades like those and bigger are usually made using an alloyed steel called “Manganese Steel” or “Mangaloy” also “Hadfield Steel” because this is one if the most toughest and abrasive steels there is and as a bonus the steel actually self repairs over time because it work hardens and gets extremely hard and tough up to 65 + HRC which is high speed steel territory but it does not harden all the way through, only the parts that are doing the work so the tips and edges and as soon as they start to wear the new steel hardens underneath so in essence it self repairs constantly holding an edge but that’s not all, because the new steel underneath is softer it’s has very high impact toughness whilst resisting wear on the work hardened edges. This is why it’s used in shredders and crushers excavator bucket teeth things like that and you’d be surprised the things it’s used in. It’s almost impossible to machine even with TC (Tungsten Carbide) due to its work hardening properties, it is usually cut to shape with plasma cutters or laser cutters due to its crazy properties and then ground, Anyway I just thought it was relevant to what is going on here.

    Do you mean the capacitive touch wasn't working? Did you not detect the touch or what were you using for sudden breaking. My first thought is something in the chain or knock the motor gear off perpendicular to the rotation. (As the dropping something in the chain could damage things and this just removes the rotation force faster than the motor can stop.)

  • @tzagear

    @tzagear

    Жыл бұрын

    Had not finished the video when I wrote that. Could be something that pulls the keys outward from the motor gears as well. Or like a spring on the inside of the key that can push it out all the way then a cap to keep it from doing that but the capacitive touch ditches the cap, yeeting the key, thus stopping the shredification.

  • @ActionBOX

    @ActionBOX

    Thanks for your input. To stop the shredder I can just stop sending signal to the motors and the blades will stop spinning instantly. The issue isn’t the mechanical, but rather getting the electronics to work flawlessly. Does that make sense? Cheers

    @@ActionBOX I think I am following. Due to the size I don't think the built in capacitance of the arduino will work. Maybe a TTP223 or MTCH112 would work. What is the total mass of the connected metal of each of the shredding sides?
