Homemade parachutes - At home science - ExpeRimental #9

Build a homemade parachute, see if you can get an egg safely to the ground, and explore what it means to do a fair test.

Jackie Potter and her son Alex do some science at home while they make a toy parachute. They investigate what makes a good parachute, and try to get an uncooked egg to the ground safely. They experiment with making their parachute out of different materials, shapes and sizes to see which makes the best one. They learn what it means to do a fair test, and think about how to compare the strengths - and failings - of one parachute compared to another.
ExpeRimental, brought to you by the Royal Institution of Great Britain, is a series of free short films that make it fun, easy and cheap to do science at home with children aged 4 to 10. Our films give you lots of ideas for kids' activities that will help you explore the world around you, question and experiment together. We'll show you how to do the activity and how to make sure adults and children get the most out of it. Why not have a go and then tell us what you think on our Facebook page? / ri.experimental

You can make the parachute fall straighter and steadier by cutting a small hole in the middle (just like a real parachute). Without the hole, the 'chute fills up with air which then "spills" randomly out from the edges, making it wobble and drift. With the hole, the excess air bleeds steadily out of the middle, and the chute falls straight and smooth.

Thank you for sharing that Harold, we were going to experiment with cutting a hole in the parachute, but ran out of time! - We'll have to have a go with it at some point and see what happens.

This appears to be a video showing parents how they can introduce their children to science by getting them involved in a 'fun' activity, so why do some people find it ok to write nasty comments about the people in the video. This should not be tolerated especially as the child in the video might see these comments in the future. Are you your perfect? No, I don't think you are. Yes, there is the freedom of speech so you can voice your opinion, but hurtful comments are not necessary!

I have to say, the "Homemade Parachutes" title didn't sound like "science with children" so much as it sounded like a way to permanently get rid of children.

It's a neat idea for a teaching project, but please don't call it play. Play is impulsive and free from any concrete goals -- it's an important part of children's lives that is under threat from the increasing institutionalization of childhood.

Poor kid. Nobody listen to them. Listen again carefuly what he said: "Some type of thick, but not too thick cloth. So that wind get caught in it, but it still falls down." With vocabulary at this age, what he wanted to say is actually: "Some type of dense, but not too dense cloth. So that air is partially 'trapped' in it, yet still going down. (Something resembling wind break netting.) What adults heard is what she said to him: "So you wanted it to be kind of light, but kind of thicker at the same time." I don't know what she wanted to say by means of "kind of light, but kind of thicker at the same time". Perhaps, light but stronger? Or what?! I am not native English speaker, and had trouble understanding meaning of "thick" in the past. Smetimes people refering it to thickness of the material, sometimes refering to density or viscosity of some substance. I suppose that this kid has viscosity in his mind, but unable to explain it with current vocabulary at his age. He probably noticed the difference moving hand through air vs. water. Moving spoon through water vs. honey. Childs logic conclusion is that he wanted similar effect to be applied to the parachute (if possible), as honey is more viscous, or "thick" in comparison to water or air. Well, here adults spoiled the childs brilliant idea and way of thinking.

My apologies. I am not an expert on either forces or language, just a mum whose child wanted to take part in this. I will make sure I do a bit more research if we do anything else like this.Thank you for your comment.
