    I add about 1/10th of the amount of flies you add and in my opinion it is much more efficient. You will still have large amounts of larvae as a small population of flies will instinctively lay depending on the size of the current fly population, basically they will seek to replenish their small population. The cultures also last longer as less nutrients is used up and you can have many more cultures.

    Not sure if that is 100% accurate but I will see if you are right next time I make cultures.

    Great channel! keep up with your great work! Could someone tell me if I can keep a pair of tinctorius nominat dartfrogs to my new bioactive vampire crab tank? the length of the tank is 120cm and the crabs habitat is pretty the same as for the frogs (not deep water, between 23-27C°, humidity 80% - 95%, places to hide, climb and go on, and so on). I would really appreciate any advice 😊 (sorry for my bad grammar)

  • @MikeTytula

    @MikeTytula

    There might be some issues with the crabs going after the frogs, or just taking advantage of them being there. So if you want to risk your frogs, go for it, but I would rather keep things safe.

    no i dont think its related to high temps. i have 3 springtails culture and 1 of them are punched with small holes. Then one day when i check on my cultures i saw the one with small holes punch were full of the mites that are same as those in my viv. that culture were completely wiped out btw.

    Wow, this is so complicated I got here while looking if I can extend my fruit fly cultures longevity with some recipe... but all seems to be circling between 4 and 5 weeks. What I do is 2 big spoons of dry fruit flakes (baby food stuff), 1/2 tea spoon of citric acid, 1/2 tea spoon of dry yeast. I just add water while i mix to get that porridge consistancy, stuff some natural raffia (i just buy one raffia and cut it half, lasts me a year but i only mix 2 cups per two weeks for now) in it, provides great surface area. wait for about 15 minutes for it to raise and transfer fruit flies in it. (i use 500 ml or 17 oz beer plastic cups and just cover them with rubber band and kitchen paper towel on top). Seems alot less work and lasts pretty much same amount of time, fruit flies are booming in that. It's very cheap, fast and easy to make. Only problem I'm having is the price on plastic cups these days since EU tries to reduce plastic consumption.

    With mine I switch between Nutritional Yeast and powdered super greens mix. Basically all kinds of greens and plant proteins etc in a very fine powder usually in the health food section for smoothies etc. They grow great on it and even though it was about $10 for the bag it would literally last for years and years if all I was using it for was springtails a pinch at a time. My Isopods love it too.

    I wonder if adding active yeast is really the best thing, especially when you're adding sugars. It is my opinion that a couple teaspoons of nutritional yeast (dead brewers' yeast) _instead_ may be better in the long run. The reasons being that the active yeast will quickly multiply (which is great for maggots, don't get me wrong), but will eventually lead to fermentation (which happens anaerobically), which means no more oxygen in the growing medium, plus alcohol production, equals dead fly culture. Why would you want to accelerate this process by adding active yeast?- it's going to happen eventually with wild yeast anyhow, by means of transference by the flies themselves, and also settling in through the screen. Also, brewers' yeast _is_ more nutritious- it contains the entire vitamin B complex. So, it seems to me that adding lots of an inactive yeast, which is still great food for maggots & flies, will provide the necessary food while prolonging the culture by _not_ allowing the culture to become over-run with living yeast _as quickly,_ thereby delaying anaerobic conditions & alcohol production. Active yeast, on the other hand, is just a good way to give fermentation a head start. Don't forget that as yeast multiplies, it consumes oxygen that the maggots need! I think a scientific experiment is in order. This needs to be settled.

    Yes in theory that would be accurate but I have no ever noticed any cultures crashing or dieing due to fermentation and alcohol production. but that is for sure accurate and be my guest to test it and let me know how it does.

    Once I have more flies than I know what to do with, I probably will. It could just be that yeast reproduction is slowed by the mold inhibitors in the culture in combination with such a thick medium. Thanks for responding.
