Hello!
This is one of the simplist, yet, Best, {seemingly,} most durable, designs I have seen for a DIY drill press. The design is so Simplistic in it's design that it is actually a thing of beauty. That being said, however, I do foresee two potential flaws. Well, perhaps flaws might be too negative of a word. Maybe diffuculties or imperfections. I think one of the isssues I am seeing could actually just boil down to a maintanence consideration, a frequent - and possibly even a very very frequent Maintanence issue. The first, and probably more serious issue I believe I would have to consider before builing or replicating your, albeit ingenious DIY design, is Precision. The Outer 'Sliding' Sleeve of Steel that runs over the Main tower of Guide Channel," the Main Support "Tower" of Lead or Steel Pipe that the Drill runs horizonally on had a fair amount of play. Also there was No guide channel to prevent the Outer Sleeve from Horizontal "Corkscrew" rotation. I estimate you could get anywhere from 3/8 to 5/8 play parallel from the guide Main "tower Pipe at the tip of the drill bit, meaning Vertical play. And, because of the "Possibility" of Corkscrew rotation, theoretically the Tip of the Drill Bit could Leave the Work 'Support Table Altogether. The second, and Far less serious iissue, something that cpild potentially become more of an annoyance than a "Problem, per se, iis the fact that the active motion of the Press Mechanism utilizes an outer Sleeve ttravelling anlong a Stationary "Tower" Steel Pipe, rather than a Geared system, worm and wheel for example. {Granted a gearong system would be incredible sophicated to design and a nightmare to build as a DIY project, That isn't the point I was making tho. A gearing system, in an enclosed case would get Lubricated and be protected in the housing of the unit )Most likely.) While the simplicity of your design iis beautiful, for the Slide Mechanism to function 1/2 reasonably, or even somewhat smoothly it needed, and would continue to need grease. In any environment where you are using a Drill Press, there is without a doubt going to be filings dust, most likely copious amounts of saw dust, possibly engines running kicking up debris and pumping smoke, pollitants into the air, people Sweeping up - again kicking up dust. The grease on the Upright Steel Pipe, and therefore the inside of the "Travelling Sleeve," would endlessly be collecting and trapping dust on top of dust and particles and everything in the air and whatever else blows in. Grease + Particles of Every and Any kind = Sticky messes. The longer you leave it the stickier and Messier it gets as well. You woll be forever cleaning degreasing and relubricating the Steel Pipe Tower and Travelling Sleeve, Or you'll be fighting the Stickiness and having More trouble with the Precision issues I mentioned earlier. Don't get me wrong. It Really IS the Very Very Best DIY design I have seen as yet and I have been looking, Been Searching actually. I am not wasting $100 on Ebay for some Flimsy Puter alloy P-O-S thats going to break the first time I blink near it. I don't want some wooden guides - wood on wood, wooden handen, wooden cog guarenteed to snap the first time you exert any pressure stupid design waste of time and material like I have seen 1/2 dozen time either. Their Was a Ball Bearing Drawer Slide design that "Looked" promising, but upon closer scrutiny it just had NO hope of any longevity. Your Design is By far, Bar VERY far the Best So Far. I "May" tweak the design slightly to inclue a Vertical Guide and Groove Channel and/or Channel - interanal "Key" wiithin the Slider to keep the slider's Groove Lined up with the Tower Steel Pipe's Groove. If I cut the grove }"Key" pperfectly and cuut dual tapers at each end on opposite sides to give it a fractional "rocking" just at the Vear tip to help promote the start of travel, it "May" act similar to a Piston ring in an engine and take up the Slack space between the Upright Tower and The Travelling Sleeve, But Still allow for travell, with the Fractional Taper, while being Sloghtly tight-osh or Stiffish, it would prevent scorkscrew rotation, as well as prevent or at least Greatly reduuce vertical "Tipping" In - Out motion of the Drill bit tip. I'd try that, or .. If the "Key" design binds up, I would try getting "Bird Ammo," for a Sling shot. I'd then use my Round file to make either 2 or 3 - Probably 3 channels inside the Travelling sleeve, NOT all the way to the Tops and Bottoms tho of course. I'd stay a good 1/4 inch from the ends. The uuse my zip grinder to cut coorresponding grooves into the Upright Steel Pipe. IIt May be tricky to keep the Bird Ammo in the Sleeve. II'd Likely use some of my neodymium magnets on the outside to keep the "Bearings" inside, while I got the Slider into place, remove the Magnets - grease and ..... Wowee. It may take a bit of finicky doing, But I have done my share of doing, adjusting, adjusting, intil I got it Just Perfect. I think with just a little Tweaking your design could be One hell of a Long term, Extremely High Quality tool that can do Professional Quality work. I'd also Dismantly the Drill and Permanently attatch the Motor in an enclosed case with a Separate Switch. If the Drill is/was Variable Sped, I'd just wire in a Variable 3,4, or 5 speed switch rather than that mess of a cord with the Ugly drill hanging off. The upshot is, Thank for an Excellent Design. I think it could use a Little bit of refinement to be "Finished." But I am Very impressed. Thank You ! Xan

@@KwandoTechnic - I Used to work in construction, "Once upon a time." We used to get sent to do the Jobs that other people either : A).refused to even "ret" to do. Or : B). the Jobs other people "already tried" to do but, the screwed up, so we had to come behind and "Fix." :- )) I was being Totally serious with every word of praise I gave you. Your design IS ingenious. : My "suggestions" for improvements, are just that. "Suggestions." You have a functional design that will be more functional than, "Will do in a pinch." Granted, it does have the accuracy and the 'repeat' for multi function - repetive work accuracy plus the binding issues, and the couple others. But still, it DOES still have the Durability and the Beauty of Simplicity. I honestly do intend to Create a "close" facsimile" of your design with the few Modifications, I have suggested. The things like removine the Motor from either an electric or Cordless Drill and Mouting the Motor and Chuck on the Pulley apparatus so the Drill handle isn't part of the weight of the "Press" and the Weight of the "Entire Drill won't diminish or Add to the Balance Issue adding to accuaracy issues. - Adding a Seperate "Onn/Off" switch Mounted other than "Part of the Drill" itself seems a Logical next step. - I am sure you would have Thought of that after using the Drill press a few times anyway. ------------ Thank you for your Kind reply to my Comment. It's Posters Like you who give such positive feedback to peoples comments that make it worth commenting. :- )) I always "Try" to keep my comments to Positve "Suggestions," and Praise. Especially whe I see something like this - Something that is Such a Brilliant Simple Design. My ONLY Remark that ISN'T a High Praise, that Could be a "near catty" remark is "I wish I had though of This First ! But, even that ends up being high Praise to you. Hi5 Man And thanks for the Design.
