Homemade DIY Railway - Work Begins Update

Gear I use available on Amazon - www.amazon.com/shop/stevewallis
Camera gear I use - www.amazon.com/shop/stevewall...
I'm back at the acreage in full swing of working on the house again. While I'm out here I will be working on connecting the treehouse to a few other campsites around the property with a homemade light rail system. My friend Tim has generously provided some surplus pressure-treated wood that will work well as ties, and I will get some chainlink fence ties that will work well as rails. We still need to come up with a train to go on it, but it should be rolling in two weeks!

    Might want to consider angle iron for rails with flange type wheels. The tubes and roller idea could work for a straight run but it will be crucial to have a perfect gauge the entire length and very very gradual turns or it would pinch/derail. Perhaps rollers that are wider than the rail to allow some play but still risk derailing on corners with the round rail. Plus flat flat stock/angle iron rail would allow you to easily make a very simple “frog” type switch

  • @NewHampshireNick

    @NewHampshireNick

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@joelmartin2549 not with the original idea for wheels but if there was flange type wheels with enough play it might work but the abrupt direction change with the round rail would still be a huge derail risk. But with enough patience and tools a more standard switch could be fabricated to make it less abrupt and more fluid. Or premade sections that can be swapped out rather than a switch. Of course I’m sure the idea here is to do everything on the cheap so what’s best might not be economical. Have to make due with what you got.

    I could see several different rails, and then in between where they all connect, having a train platform like in European train stations. Drive your train onto the platform, then it rotates to line you up with the rail you need to be on, and PRESTO a simple track change!! That’s gonna look so cool when it’s done. And this is EXACTLY why I subscribe to this channel…because there’s always something fun going on regardless of whether it’s camping or not.

    If you're going to stick with the tubular rails and wheels you'll need a steering system of some kind. Like a circular bearing between the axial and car. The front and rear wheel can rotate around their center or else it won't be able to make it around the corners. I imagine a cylindrical thrust bearing with the axis of rotation centered on axial at the midpoint between the wheel. This would be plenty strong enough to support the weight of the car and cargo while allowing the cart to make it around the turns no problem. With this setup the car will be very sensitive to changes in gauge so you'll definitely want to make sure the distance between the rails doesn't wander much or car will experience a lot of friction or may not run at all. It could also be really loud in that case. Also, I'm not sure but think the ballast is import not only for drainage to protect the wood, but also to help hold the ties in place and keep weeds and plants from growing through the rails and moving the ties around. If the ties move around too much over the years it could damage the rails. I think this is a great idea and you should be able to pull it off. I'm excited to see where this goes.

  • @amosbackstrom5366

    @amosbackstrom5366

    2 жыл бұрын

    Very good advice. If your tracks have any decent turns you'll need to figure out how to accomplish this without causing the wheels to slip. Trains do not have a differential, the wheels on each side share an axle. The way their wheels work is really genius, they're not flat at the bottom but slanted inwards, with the smaller diameter toward the outside. This solves two problems, it makes the train self-centering on the straightaways and it causes the train to shift to one side on the turns, this increases the wheel diameter on the outside and decreases it on the inside of the turn. I'm not saying you have to change your rails, I think you can solve these problems by using the wheels you talked about (they're also self centering) and ideally using free floating wheels, but honestly you could probably just deal with the wheels slipping a little. Good luck this is actually a really cool idea

    "I want to connect the campsites to the treehouse via this rail line" -- that's literally the origin story of Walt Disney, who built a miniature rail and train in his yard that he took guests for rides on. I can't help but smile at the thought of Steve Wallis building his own Canadian camping themed park. May I suggest the name Chilltopia? The Wonderful World of Step 2?

    Steve, you never have to apologize for doing a different kind of video. I really appreciate the spirit of this. You need to be home for work on the house so camping isn’t an option this week. Do you sit around doing nothing? Of course not. You build a railway (using recycled materials, which makes it even better, in my opinion) connecting the house to all of your different campsites on the acreage. This is awesome, and I’m looking forward to seeing how far the project goes.

    I think you're going to want to place a couple inches of crushed stone underneath certain parts of the tracks. It'll create a more even surface for the tracks, create landings for the sharper declines, cover the ground which has vegetation/would require a lot of maintenance each spring/summer, it would drain better after the winter so the wood will be stronger for longer, and also for safety it would be a more supportive surface for heavier loads. All the best, Steve!! I love the way you think!! Looking forward, again, to next Thursday -- cheers my guy

    Make yourself a “spacing stick” out of whatever you have around to keep the “rail to rail distance” consistent. Easier than using a tape measure and a whole lot more accurate. You’re lucky you can create whatever “guage” you desire. Maybe 30” wide.

    Alternatively the Red-Green in me says to build a locomotive that has springs on the ends of the axels that keep the wheels pressed into the rails. The wheels would be concave rubber and would move in and out as the rail line narrows and widens. That way if there is an obstacle the rails and wheels could move closer together and then spread apart again. ;-)

    Yeah the moment he mentioned those fence wheels I said "oh no!". If he's using those wheels, he can put the wheels on either side of a single axel each that can pivot in the middle, much unlike a train wheel like you are suggesting. If he made the wheels more like a train, which are basically cone-shaped, then he wouldn't need to do that.

  • @joelmartin2549

    I think cost is the factor, I know those train wheels are expensive, maybe he could grind part or all of the outer flange off of those fence wheels he plans to use, that way they would be closer to the real thing.

    Research the way train wheel geometry works, the wheels have a single slope to them and are wider towards the inside of the track. This acts as a differential when the train goes around bends since the wheels are on a common shaft and cannot vary speed from the inside of the track to the outside. You will either need to mimic this with your wheels, or you will need each wheel to be on it's own axle. If you use the wheels you are planning on common axle the inside wheel will either skid or come off the track when going around bends.

    I agree. There's not much way for round stock casters to gain traction. I've built machines that have round stock tracks that casters ride on, but there's a high powered electric motor driving the whole assembly and not the wheels themselves. And these things are big heavy storage units that sit on level concrete industrial shop floors. I doubt powered casters would be able to get any traction of galvanized tube stock, especially on an upward grade.

  • @raleighthomas3079

    @raleighthomas3079

    @@HappyMinds1 agree on the genius geometry used on modern wheels and rails, but the forged steel rails are the crucial part, they can handle the side-pressure forces happening with the inside tapered wheels. The steel gate rollers have a huge ‘U’ profile flanges, that would keep his weight-downsized rail system going around shallow bends no problem. HUGE heads-up to Steve on the rail engineering, keep the joints centered on top of a tie, ALWAYS. Let the tie at the joint guide your spacing. 😉👍 ( From an actual engineer-type guy. )

    Oh, what fun! The place we lived for years was out in the woods, and one of the farms we passed on our way in and out had a small rideable train with several cars. They had a train barn with "Mail Pouch" painted on the side, where the train went in one end and came out the other. It was also where the train was kept sheltered during the winter. They had added a tunnel through one of those big concrete pipe sections. Planted fast growing bushes on either side to make it look cool. Such a treat to see it running around the large looped track. The train started at the train barn up near the house, ran down next to the driveway to almost the end (I think they also used the train for transporting the trash cans on trash and recycle days), then the tracks paralleled the road for a bit, went through a hedge, turned back up toward the back of the property and went through the tunnel. After that it continued back near the real barn, and made the final turn to finish the loop and pass through the train barn (about the height of a person and a bit longer than the entire train). On nice summer days we'd drive past and see the old guy in his overalls and conductor's cap giving kids a ride. Awesome! Have fun with your train, it's a wonderful project!

    From experience with dog kennels and fencing I can say that the pipes are not as solid as you think. One good tree limb fall and the pipes are crushed. I tried to build a small roof out of 1/4 plywood and 2x4s on the pipes of a kennel before and it collapsed after about a foot of snow fell on it the first time. You may want to go with square or rectangular tubing. I know prices for everything is crazy, but it will hold up longer with weight on them more than what that thin pipe will. That or even heavy metal gas line might work as well. Being suspended in the air and not being flush to the ground may also bring a concern with flex with the pipes unless you plan on the wooden ties in the ground, which it don't seem that way. Anyways, good luck guys and have fun!
