homemade DIY cat wheel (and also designlight)

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

I made a catwheel in a inner wall in my appartment and made it also a design light object..
Later on in the video you can see my sweet little Cleo (Egyptian Mau) fetching her all time favorite toy! 8)
To give answer to all the questions of how to make it:
- most important to know is that you need to work with a router (with a circle jig). Here is a video of how that works: • How to make a large ci... .
- best is to make the catwheel bigger then mine, I would suggest at least 115-120 cm diameter.
- Lets say you are going to make a catwheel of 120cm o.d., then you`ll need 2 pieces of at least 120x120cm of 15mm mdf.
- screw both pieces on top of eachother, SCREWS OUTSIDE THE 120cm CIRCLE (on the 4 corners)
- draw crosslines from the corners of these pieces to find the midle.
- drill a hole in the middle for the circle jig of the router.
- the front circle has an inner diameter of 110cm and an outer diameter of 120cm (so, it is 5cm wide).
- both pieces are cut from the backside, because it has a groove of approx 6 mm wide and 10mm deep, where the material for the runningsurface is glued in. This groove has an diameter of 115cm.
- Adjust your circle jig to 57,5cm (115/2) and cut a circle of 10mm deep.
- Flip the 2 attached pieces of mdf and do the same on the other side.
- Lets say that this side is going to be the front circle.
- drill a few more screws within the 110cm inner diameter to secure this part to the backpiece. THE SCREWS MAY NOT GO THROUGH BOTH PIECES, just long enough to attatch them together.
- set your circle jig to 120cm and cut the outer diameter of the front piece.
- flip the pieces over and cut the o.d. of the back piece.
- Now you have 2 circular pieces of mdf with an o.d. of 120cm and a groove with a diameter of 115cm.
- Flip again to the side from where you screwd both pieces together. This is going to be the frontpiece.
- Adjust the circle jig to 11cm and cut the inner diameter of the piece. It doesn`t matter if you cut a little bit to deep, cause you will cut in the backside of the backpiece (and that is out of sight)
- take the screws out, the router work is done!
- Lay the backpiece on the ground or your working table with the groove facing upward.
RUNNING SURFACE:
- for the running surface, I recommend using bendable wood.
- If you like the running surface to be 20cm deep, let it cut to piece of 22cm wide (since both ends will be glued in a 10mm deep groove).
- the total length of the running surface you can calculate with the formula: length = diameter x pi. (pi = 3,1415). So, for a total length running surface of the 115cm diameter groove, you will need 115 x 3,1415 = 361, 27 cm of running surface.
- I`m affraid you are not going to find it in one piece.
- Best is to make it out of 2 pieces, with on both end one piece overlapping the other piece.
- This means you`ll need the router again to take away half of the thicknes of the material on both ends of both parts of the running surface.
- with an overlap of 5cm the total length needs to be 10cm longer.
- Because of the overlap, we can round of the total length downwards to 360cm + 10cm = 370cm.
- Meaning you`ll need 2 pieces of 185 x 22 cm of running material (= boundable wood/ multiplex).
- take away half of the thincknes on all 4 ends of these pieces.
- Now it`s time to glue the wheel together.
- Put some wood glue in the groove of the circular backpiece.
- put 1 piece of the running surface in the groove.
- put some glue on both ends (overlap) of the other piece of the running surface and put it in the groove to round the circle.
- now put some glue in the groove of the frontpiece and place it on top of the side of the the running surface.
-clamp it together and let it dry.
When its dry you can attach a ballbearing to the back of the wheel.
You can find suitable ballbearings on ebay, look for "FLANGE MOUNT BALL BEARING", these come together with a backplate, mountingplate.
- Be very secure with mounting it exactly in the middle of the wheel, you can use the hole from the circle jig from the router to center it.
- I used a shaft of 25mm thick, I don`t know about the options for shafts, I welded it myself.
- For the people who want to make the wheel in a wall, also a hole in the wall needs to be cut.
- Make the diameter of this hole approx 2cm wider then the running diameter (not bigger then the outer diameter of the frontpiece).
You can attatch the leds if you like.
Make a very sterdy construction to mount the shaft on.
I hope to have explained the biggest part of "how to build"....

I think you should just call this a homemade cat wheel instead of a homemade DIY cat wheel. DIY implies that pretty much anyone can make it. This takes talent and craft.

Thanks Patricia for your very kind reply!!! I`m surprised every time I read a reply with people that can see from the video how I love my 2 companions. I mean, the vid is showing off, nice place, design furniture, cats matching the design off my home haha... should be easy to think the other way around for a lot of people... But fact is that I googled on certain "personality" caracters wich are comonly found in a breed. most important were: not having a problem with being kept inside, a friendly character with a certain desire to hang out with other cats and easy adaption with other cats (I had a very difficult cat (Milan) back then, who was hit by a car 2 times in just 3 years, so I kept him inside wich frustrated him, I found him a buddy (Donna), but that still didn`t work after 6months, Then "crashtest Milan" went outside for just 1 more time and was hit by a car AGAIN, poor basterd.. couldn`t believe this happend with going outside for the first time after the previous acciden!. His hip was dislocated and the other leg was broken, he wasn`t very mobile as you may understand. That was the time he finally made peace with Donna. But unfortunally it just lasted a year...then Donna died on hartfaillure (hcm)... Milan got verry depressive in a few months and still frustrated with not going outside... oh how I loved poor Milan... I decided to try to find a buddy again. So, you understand HOW important personal character was that I would like to see in the new Kitty, to even get a chance with Milan. Intellegence and interaction would be nice too, but not priority. Well, that`s how I found the Egyptian Mau breed, quite a story... the nicely spotted coat was just a pleasant surprise. ;) In the litter there was one that stood out from the kittens. She wasn`t the most beautifull but I thought she had the most "respect" to brothers and sisters of all. Lot of people may laugh right now (if the didn`t stop reading earlier haha), but if you observe them, you can realy see the differance. When I played with her, she played (brothers and sisters were trying to take over), when I played with brothers and sisters, she was just watching... same with giving cat candy to her and/or brothers and sisters. Also she was the one wich chose ME, so I took her home and called her Cleo. Cleo couldn`t have done a better job in trying to be accepted by Milan. Every time Milan showed agressively that this was HIS domain, she just headed down and took it. After a while she realy desired to huglle with Milan, when he was sleeping, she just got a little closer to him, but respected his comfort zone... I was hoping that it was going in the good direction but on a moment it just started going downhill. Milan was to frustrated with being kept inside. The option of letting him out to hit a car a being immobile and had to accept Cleo, was not the nicest haha. So, I took the hard descission to find Milan a better (safer) home, where he was able to go outside without being hit by a car once a year... My buddy deserved to be happy, and walk around with his tail up again. Saying goodbey was his best chance, so we did. Then Cleo was alone for just a few days, this was terrible for her she just couldn`t handle it and was constantly mauwing. Seemingly she even felt better with angry Milan around, then being alone. For choosing her campanion I wasn`t as picky as before. Her buddy had to be friendly and not have a problem with living in an appartment. Because of the spotted coat of Cleo I thought on this one another spotted coat would be nice. I came home with Chip, an Ocicat boy. He and Cleo are best friends from the second day! I was just shocked how easy this CAN be!!! In one of my other vids you can see Chip and Cleo wrestling, they are a nice match and Always sleeping together. And when I go to bed, they will follow within a few minutes. Just REALY, realy nice... guess I finally deserved it.

But that's a death sentence here with pits running loose in the neighborhood. I think, Ralph, if you can find trustworthy financial backing, you could make all Catdom thrilled with marketing this for we less than handy cat lovers. Just please, make some in the lower end price range for those of us on a fixed income!

Thanks for your great reply Lily. I had the same feel of guilt, that`s why I build it... Putting it on market isn`t simple. I would love to do that, but there are a few problems: 1) The wheel like shown in this video, needs a inner wall to be sacrifised, very few people are willing (or able) to do so. 2) costs: Materials alone for this wheel cost about $150-200,=, add the costs of work to this, shipping and taxes/import...and you will end up with a very unpleasent price...

Thank you. It is realy quite simple build. The loops are made with a router. The frontloop has a groove on the backside wich is equal to the diameter of the back of the wheel. In this groove I have glued flexible multiplex, wich I also attached to the back of the wheel. An axle is attached to the exact middle of the back of the wheel (wich you have automatically when you cut out a circle with a router). Behind the wheel is a construction with the ballbearings. Wich is shown in the video. Cheers!

Nath Lapointe As far as I know, it`s the other way around and do a lot of Savannah`s look like Egyptian Mau`s. The Egyptian Mau are (one of) the oldest domesticated cat breeds. Because of their very friendly nature (and also their cosmetic appearence, their body, high legs, spotted coat etc) they are verry often used as the "domesisticated cat" in the Savannah breed. (F1 Savannah = serval x "domesticated cat"). I also have had a half breed Savannah (F4 Savannah father, Norwegian Forest cat mother), she was also lovely and indeed had some similarity with the Mau. You can find a few videos of her in my other videos "very cute vid of fetching Donna..." f.e. Unfortunally Donna died at heartfaillure, she was just 2,5 yrs old...

I'm about 8 years late to this video but wanted to say I love this and plan on trying to make one for my siamese kitty! Found a company that makes something similar but it's over $400 so DIY it is!

wow I'm so impressed your home is beautiful your cats are beautiful.I'm currently trying to make a cat wheel. Just trying to figure how to stabilize the back part . I've used a kitty pool for mine. I have two cats both are tabbies .Ben a cream tabbies is very high energy runs and flies all day.Lately he's been trying to sneak out of the house. Luke a orange tabby is over weight and Dr says he needs to play more .Thus the making of the wheel.

Erin Murphy If you take a look at my other videos (in my channel) then you will find a vid of a coffeetable wich is also a toy (vid is called: " salontafel cq knikkerbaan"). And somewhere to the end of the list, there is a video called "Milan in z`n nieuwe chillout". These things are all integrated in my interior. Another nice toy (wich they still play with) you`ll find in the video "Cleo playing with new toy".

Someone said this cat is being spoilt , no it's not being spoilt , this must be a indoor cat and indoor cats need exercise , this man is a good man looking after his cats making sure there getting enough exercise , he doesn't want his cats being fat and obese ! Some people on here need to think out side the box before hating on this man ,

+Stephanie Heywood Thanx again Stephanie! And you are totally right that these are cats living indoors, in a small appartment. (my previous cat got three accidents in 4.5 years, so going outside, is in the garden and only when I`m arround. Most important when choosing the breed, was that they could be happy and comfortable in a small apartment... Not going outside makes me have to make a few things to get excercise if the like to. Didn`t know if it was going to be used when finnished, but I`m verry happy that they do. When the finished the wheel (it was 30 dgr C and had been quite a project), I crashed the couch and thought "pffff, this probably was the easiest part. How am I going to learn them to use it?", I turned around and couldn`t get a bigger apriciation, Chip was allready using it!! In the FIRST minute, like he had been waiting untill I was finally finished. Since that moment, it is used every single day. Wich I have never seen before. Usually they are attracted by a toy (without my interaction) for 2-3 weeks and then loose interest and go back on fetching whatever toy is available. But I can not Always interact on the moments they would like me to. Cleo Always does the same, if she can`t get my attention, she goes in the wheel asking for attention (she`s a little dramaqueen, so I don`t Always give her attention when she keeps asking for it), but in all cases she doesn`t move a paw, before I realy come to look at her as how great she`s doing. You can also see this in the video, when I go behind the wheel to show the back of it, she is allready walking when I come back out. And constantly looking for contact if I am still paying attention (to nothing else but her haha). She was a dramaqueen allready when I got her btw, it`s not that I made her like that. Chip is the Big Boy (abt 8-9 kg now), he`s less active, more lazy etc. Before the wheel, chip had a quite annoying thing with getting negative attention, realy anoying. There`s not much that they are not allowed to, but Chip allways had those moments of going around, to show his unsattisfaction. Litterary doing every little thing he knew he anoyed me with. I mean like throwing things down, breaking things, Climbing on the tv. Audible I couldn`t get him to stop, when I did like if I was standing up, he ran away, so he realy knew that he wasn`t making me to happy with that. Even playing didn`t help to much, because Cleo is much alerter and then he was like "Mweh." and a few minutes later doing his round again. If there are people reconizing this behavior, a catwheel may really be worth trying. [whispermode/ ON] he didn`t have a single unsatisfaction-parade again. [whispermode/ OFF]. Don`t know if he uses it when I`m not around (Cleo for sure doesn`t), but he uses it several times a day, not running (wich I`m happy with, because the wheel is a little to small for him. That running wouldn`t be good for his back). Why would he run anyway? haha. And also nice: he doesn`t need attention to see him doing it. He often even goes walking when I go sleeping. So, overall, the project was well worth the effort! I made the lights behind it, in case it wouldn`t be an succes (not being used), then it would still be a nice solar eclips like object, in stead of a failed project. (Like I said, I didn`t know if they would be going to use it, didn`t even know it existed. My friends realy laughed at me when I told what that hole in the wall was ment to be.) However Stephany, I think that the person who said that "my cats are in danger to be spoiled to death" ment it as a joke. At least, I gave thumbs up for it. Every now and then there are comments from people that just can`t understand someone does so much effort for a cat. Or, they are competitive and can`t handle someone doing something nice, I guess. These people are and these people Always will be, everywhere. On a day 20% of the votes was thumbs down, while what is not to like in a video like this? Like I said, it takes a heart to reconize another. They aparrently haven`t, let`s ignore them. But I appriciate you`re standing proudly for what matters in life. Don`t try to let that be taken away in todays messed up, stressed up world that seems to be about only money and work. Hope these things will change somehow (I know some political changes might be comming up. And communities with goodwilling, loving and carring people are popping up on differant places. They are out-of-the-box-thinkers who stand for a society with less barking, more helping, for all that should life be about. They stand for more freedom and less differances between rich and poor. No society that is ruled by banks and fake democratic leaders (wich may be chosen by the people with the election, but don`t give a damn about the opinion of the people), Power back to the people, if hiergy, then a totally differant kind! The economic system is on it`s way of selfdestruction. A broken system can not be fixed with the same way of thinking that caused the damage. That is a proven fact! That`s why change is needed. If you like to know more, take a look at "Ubuntu community". And keep standing up for what matters! Some migth call me a softy, hippy, or whatever they feel comfortable with. They don`t have a clue that it is the other way around. It takes balls, to stand out from the croud. It takes balls to expose vulnerable. It takes balls to step in something new. It takes BALLS to even dare to think out of the box that makes you feel comfortable. Let`s be proud of that! RESPECT for all those people.

Very cool Ralph…I have 5 cats here. I had an older cat and a young cat, and then realized my neighbor moved away and abandoned his cat in the dead of winter. She was wet, frightened and sick in raining freezing weather and she was hiding in bushes and under cars. I had to gain her trust with food left out several days in a row. We got her inside and she was the sweetest thing!!! We soon realized she was to have kittens. Not only was the neighbor cruel, but he was irresponsible leaving her behind without being spayed. We found loving homes for some of her kittens but 2 remained. We went from 2 quiet cats to 5 in a few short weeks. :-) It sure is busy around here …with 2 grown cats one "teenager cat" and 2 kittens, and we love it!! :-) I wish we were as skilled as you to be able to make such lovely things for our fur babies!
