Hope your first experience goes well. This feed worked well, but sourcing the ingredients became increasingly difficult. If these are your first chickens, it may not be a bad idea to just start with a quality prepared feed until you’ve gotten everyone settled and then transition to a custom feed. Just a thought if you have a hard time getting all the items or it proves to be very expensive. Our local mill closed down after over 100 years, along with inflation, the custom feed idea has been hard to sustain

One thing to keep in mind, when you’re comparing the price per pound for the pellet feed versus what you’re doing is that the pelleted feed is not actually all feed. There’s a large amount of non-nutritive binder to hold the pellets together, so when you pay so much for 1 pound of pellets, it’s not actually 1 pound of food, it’s probably 3/4 of a pound of food and 1/4 of binder. So you might actually be saving money and not realize it because when your chickens eat that food they might get full on fewer pounds. Now what I do, I buy pelleted feed, which stays in a feeder and is always available 24/7. Twice a day though, I throw them a homemade scratch that is very similar to what you’re doing, the measurements might be slightly different, but basically the same kind of mix. The chickens like the scratch better than the pellets, but so do the wild birds and rodents, by throwing it in amounts that they tend to finish within an hour, I don’t have constant rodent bait in my coop.

Thanks for the tip on the golf ball retriever 😆. I liked the diy feed but once Covid came, finding reasonably priced grains became increasingly difficult. I’ve had to resort back to a standard layer feed and supplementing them with certain grains here and there. Hoping things will get back to normal sooner than later. Thanks for watching

I went to good will and got a poll that you use to get golf balls from a pond or a place you cant get into, They are by the golf clubs it cost me two dollars and i have had it over ten years. Comes in handy many times

LOVE your feed mix! Have you thought about soaking (fermenting) your grains and feeding it to your chickens like that for extra nutrition and to cut costs with feeding them??? If not, I think it will be worth looking into. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve thought about it and I definitely see a benefit to it. Life right now has been so hectic that it just isn’t suitable for me to keep up with fermenting it properly and regularly. Hopefully one day because it would be a better way for sure.

Super easy, i do 3 days in advance and rotating those batch every morning when i feed them. When im out for several days i use dry grains 👍 1part grain / 2 parts pure water When it smells yoghurt, it’s ready. Shake your jar once a day for better fermented grains. Great video btw👍 Im using; 1x 25kg of chicks feed 2x 25kg of mix seeds for birds Plus fermentation almost double the weight of your total food. Have a good one buddy 🙌

@@mendy5453 any grains a can get my hand on.. barley, oat, wheet, mix Bird seeds, corn.. always from local farms.. their the best quality/price.. I nerver fermed table scrap for the chicks… only seeds.. And working on a fodder system for the next winter and for my rabbits

Thanks, I’ve been keeping a log of egg production several weeks leading up to at least compare quantity of eggs laid.

What crude protien do you think your getting and how did the feed do for you?

Thanks, we tracked the egg laying habits over a 2 week period and will track their laying after the new feed to see if they lay more or if the egg yolks show any change. They seem to be liking it so far.

U might want to consider just putting hinges on flooring.. That way, U can lift the floor(as one piece)to reach eggs.. White hen seems comfortable laying eggs under there(deck). Go w/what works best for U.. Good luck.

I never thought of that. She hasn’t laid eggs under there in quite a while, but I have had smaller chickens / pullets try to sleep under there before too. Being able to raise it to reach them would have been much easier 🤔. Thanks for the tip and thanks for hanging with us. Take care.

Welcome and hello 🇦🇺! Overall the egg production stayed consistent. I definitely didn’t see a reduction, it stayed right around the same average.

Gread video sir. Im looking forward to make mix grain feed for chickens too. But before i start i just wana know was it helpful or is there any issues using this like egg production wise and chickens health? Keep up the good work 👍

It didn’t cause me any issues with their egg production. They did seem to eat more grit than prior to. I assume this was to be able to digest the larger grains so I would make sure you have available free choice grit. They picked out what they preferred and left behind the less appealing items. They do eventually eat it all though. I made an update video on how it’s gone and basically I’m running 50% the grain feed and 50% of layer pellets now. Thank you for the kind words and appreciate you spending time with us. I’m not an expert but I will certainly offer assistance on what I do know. Take care.

Personally i was thinking to add organic layers pallets too with it in form of 2:1. 2parts mix grain and one part layers. My mix grain total protien comes to 13% so if i add one part of layers with it they should be good combo? Ill definitely have a look at your other video now. Thanks again

Great video. I never presume to tell someone how to live, but I do make suggestions: Black Oil Sunflower seed is not only expensive but in many circles considered a 'treat' or winter supplement seed for chickens due to the very high fat content (25% + I believe) you could drastically cut your cost per pound by maybe exchanging the BOS for whole wheat or milo/sorghum...Keep up the good work.

Unfortunately the mill I was buying this from closed after over 100 years in operation. I’ve had a hard time finding it at a reasonable price since. Some people have luck using azure standard if you have a delivery spot near you. You may try looking into it. www.azurestandard.com/shop/search/flax%20seed

It’s in the description below the video. Here it is for easier reference 50 lb - Black Oil Sunflowers 50 lb - Whole Corn 50 lb - Whole Oats 6.25 lb - Flax Seed 6.25 lb - Millet I haven’t made it in while because the mill that I sourced it all from has since closed down so getting the items at a reasonable cost has proven difficult. I now source a non GMO feed from a provider a couple hours away.

This was originally done as a replacement to my layer feed. I did a video follow up about it as well. Overall my chickens seemed to lay consistent just as they did on layer feed. Issue I began running into with the diy feed is once Covid hit, I was having difficulty locating some items regularly due to supply and demand issues.

The feed did well but I no longer offer it because unfortunately my local mill I sourced much of it from has since shut down after over 100 years of operation. Sourcing all the stuff has become hard or a lot more expensive. I’ve since found a non gmo feed producer that’s from about 2 hours away and getting their already mixed feed.

i noticed a higher cost too but just a thought . what if it takes longer for your chickens eat this feed because its healthier and more filling? I just mixed mine up so I'll get back

She was purchased as an Easter eggers chick, but I think she looks more like a black Cochin or maybe has speckled Sussex in her Easter egger mix. So we really have no sure answers

I used it until the supply chain issue created problems. Getting the flax and black oil sunflower seeds in bulk or at a reasonable price has become difficult in my area. I have temporarily gone back to my local mills chicken feed. In terms of changes in my chickens, egg production seemed to stay pretty much the same. No noticeable difference seemed to happen. Once supply gets back to what it was I hope to be able transition back or at least use as a supplemental feed

I appreciate the feedback but unfortunately I believe your incorrect.

I don't watch your videos to see your daughter. I'm sure she's sweet and all, but this is NOT a kids show. Just sayin. Quit watching another video for the same reason. I got my own kids and I don't let them be intrusive in what I'm doing. She does seem to be a little cutie, but this is a farming video, not a kid and family video.

I don’t ask or encourage any of my children to participate in any videos. If they happen to do so or want to then I’m okay with it as well. My channel is mostly about working towards a homesteading lifestyle but is also about family. I don’t view it as intrusive when they ask to participate because it’s learning opportunities for them as well. My channel is for anyone no matter what age if they wish to learn about anything I’m doing.
