Homemade Balancing Toys Part Two // Homemade Science with Bruce Yeany
Here are a few more example of balancing toys that are made with simple materials. Making these types of toys have been especially popular with students. Toys can be a great lead in to the study of center of mass, center of gravity, levers, torque. Also makes a good STEM challenge for students to come up with their own balancing toys and investigate factors that influence it's behavior.

How's the knee?

I had both knees done at the same time, it was not a pleasant summer but it's amazing how much better I feel 6 months later. Great to be moving pain free again, Thanks

I was going to ask you about your knee also. Someone did it before I did. I'm glad you're doing better. Anyhow, great to have you back Bruce. By the way that balancing hand saying goodbye.... I thought it was awesome.

You might be too late for a gold at the Olympics for running, but nobody is too old to learn or go to school.
You're such a great teacher! I wish my children, heck, even I could have had a teacher half as good as you!
Nice to see you back Mr Bruce. Thank you
Greetings from Mexico. Great videos, great lessons but most important is the LOVE and the PASSION you put in every project. If we all had the same passion, the world would be a better place. My respect, maestro!
Great to see you again! Loved the plane with the battery.
Excellent video! Thanks for even more ideas! I am in the process of making prototype balancing toys as making projects for my school's Science and Technology departments and will pass the link to this to the relevant teachers too.
This mans the real MVP! Great work man ! Can’t wait till next vid!

Glad to see you back.
I enjoy watching your scientific videos. You are a great teacher
With the battery operated plane you could see how the center of gravity changed with the increased motion of the plane and the battery lifted with the increase of speed! Same with the bees spiralling as they decreased the rotation increased due to the weight of the bees down the incline. Pretty cool stuff! Thanks for the cool video.
Great to have you back Bruce!

Yeah... Mr. Yeany back!
India really needs teacher like u In india physics is just learning definitions and doing numericals No focus is given to practicals
You're back!
As always... Excellent video
Back in the classroom! Nice!
Bruce is back!
welcome to your regular schedule. keep making such videos which motivates us to keep learn. thanks a lot for your efforts.
That was so cool!
Love it all - as usual! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for this vid. Glad to hear you're doing fine.

Hi grate to see you back

Omg you almost hit 200k subscribers!!! good luck
Interesting that the electric plane changes the center of mass as the centrifugal force increases in unequal proportion because the masses are at unequal distances from the center of balance. There's also an interesting problem in that the masses being at different masses are different weights from each other. (force * distance = toque). The torque changes with rotation.
You are an awesome teacher
Oh if you had been my science teacher I would have been a physicist. At least I have your videos to base projects off of for my children. Thank you!!

I’m sure this guy has some sick moves on the dance floor, what a legend 😘
8:42 Most interesting moment - When the plane gets going with enough momentum the battery swings up and the plane get's pushed down. What is going on!?! I think...that it has something to do with the fact that the instantaneous linear momentum of the battery and the instantaneous linear momentum of the plane are at different heights placing them each above and below the center of mass there is a torque created. Once the mass of the airplane and the battery rotating in line with - at a plane the same height as - the center of mass everything balances out again. Or nearly if it weren't for gravity since the pivot point starts out above the center of mass the position of the center of mass gets displaced from plumb a bit so probably the whole thing processes a bit as well while rotating.

Centripetal force throws battery outward, which pivots upward at balance point fulcrum. Same thing you said :)
@chance1986

Or... the upper cylindrical surface of the battery (along with the flat bottom of the case) forms an "airfoil" and creates vertical lift. This causes the battery to rise. ;-) OK... OK, at these speeds the lift is probably in the micro-Newtons. But it sounds cool.

3:48 really important for ships - list.
👍
It's interesting to see how the motorized airplane tilts downward due to the centripetal force from the battery end. I wonder how it would perform if the battery was moved to be level with the airplane.

It looks so weird seeing the plane banked in the wrong direction.
It would be cool to put your mini lights on there and make light photos.

I retired last year, had surgery and have recovered, while still in the classroom, I shot some footage, so now I am combining that with new footage
Somebody should make Room Exit flash game on Bruce's workshop.
Although they were all cool, my favorite were the airplanes
Still having some audio distortion on the intro unfortunately. I think it would be worthwhile to discuss why this does work if the wire is shaped like a ^, but not if it's shaped like a v. In other words, why does this not work if the masses are above the contact point?
@YeanyScience
5 жыл бұрын
I know the audio continues to be a problem, this was shot with older equipment, not sure if it's the equipment or me, good news is that I've updated my equipment so we'll see. Good idea on the mass above the contact point, I have another set of toys that I will tackle down the road, including a high wire bike rider, I will make a note to tackle this then.

Try suspending weights on strings at the ends instead of fixed objects. I suspect the motion will become chaotic.
