Homelite weed eater gas trimmer will not run - how to rebuild weedeater carburetor - clean Zama carb

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Documenting how i fixed my homelite gas trimmer. Bought it at a garage sale for $10 plus new gaskets $5 and it took less than 1 hr to get back up running.
I bought the gaskets on eBay. Amazon had some, but they were a little more expensive: goo.gl/JGNLju
You can buy carb cleaner at any auto part store or hardware store.

I knew this is almost 9 years old video but still a great reference video repair tutorial. Things that I would like to point out on this tutorial are, first you must not blow a compress air directly into the primer base check valves as it will damage the check valve. Inside that check valve has a round tiny rubber disc which could dislodge when blew with compressed air. Second, pay attention on the metering side as this is very critical on the engine performance and tuning. The metering diaphragm and gasket was installed in the wrong orientation. You must place the gasket first before the diaphragm as the clearance of the diaphragm to the metering lever is very critical. When the diaphragm is way too close to the metering lever, it could open the needle valve too much and become too rich in fuel and it's hard to tune and also it's hard to revs as what you observed at the end of the video. Third, use the correct rebuild kit. For this carburetor, the correct rebuild kit is ZAMA RB-28 or ZAMA GND-49. The GND-12 metering gasket is 0.2mm thicker which makes the diaphragm 0.2mm higher when installed properly. You don't need a special gauge to adjust the height of the metering lever for this type of carburetor. Just use a straight ruler and place on the surface of the metering face and adjust the metering lever just to touch with the ruler. I just came across with this video and just would like to share my thought. Good effort and well done! It's a good reference. VARIETECH

I think you are talking about the other diaphragm. The metering diaphragm is the one that works the needle. That diaphragm goes on the carb after the gasket. The other, the fuel pump diaphragm goes the opposite. Can be hard to keep straight because we tend to put the metering diaphragm on the carb then the cover. The fuel pump on the cover then put both on the carb. He did anyway if I am not mistaken.

Nice job. One thing I've found that doesn't get discussed which I believe can affect performance is how poorly machined many of the Zama carbs are on critical surfaces from the factory. Some have fairly deep grooves and dents in the machined surfaces where I think it really counts. As a result of this I have a small thick sheet of glass that's perfectly flat and some 320 wet and dry paper. I wet everything up well and hand lap at least two surfaces if they're rough. Also due to the discoloration of the aluminum, you can see 'low spots". The critical surfaces would be the surface that goes up against the engine. If there are deep grooves or dents there, it's a place for air to leak causing the engine to run lean and have a laggy response to opening the throttle. . the other surface is the surface the flapper valves go up against. I take a few minutes and hand lap 3 surfaces. The diaphragm side (not so critical), the flapper valve side (critical), and the engine side of the carb (critical).. I use water or window cleaner spray and carefully slide the body back and forth. Doesn't take a lot of time.

Also thank you other commenters fit the god additional information. The plug in the carb he mentioned should be drilled out cleaned out and replaced. Should that piece coffee with the proper carb kit? And what of some of the other things mentioned? That should be checked in the carb? I want all the info i can before I tackle this little project.

That is one thing I was double checking. The fuel pump diaphragm goes on the opposite, diaphragm first on the carb. Actually, I was hoping the video would show the needle setting. I’m thinking different ones sit flush with different part of the carb.

I took mine Homelite trimmer carb apart and blew it out and the needle valves that are recessed that require a special tool to adjust inside a walled in casing I just took a dremel tool and cut a slit for a straight tip screwdriver to access the adjustment. Works fine now except for the low compression from it running hot before the adjustment.

George W I replace the fine screen with a slightly larger screen on the really hard to start trouble child ones and they never have issues again. Remember, the tank has a filter already in it. That extra fine screen can actually be too fine, even the oil has a hard time getting through it. I found one that was plugged with oil because someone didnt mix oil with gas first before dumping in the tank. As soon as thst oil hit the screen, it plugged it up. Even a regular cleaning didnt remove the oil plug. A small brush was needed to wash the oil plug from the screen.I got that weed wacker free on the side of the road. They even put the manual with it. I was on a bicycle ride when I found it. We were on vacation. My wife wasnt happy that I dragged it back to the campground but hey, it was free. I sold it for $45.

33 overpriced small engine repair shops gave you thumbs down. Nice work. You did more than I would have done by buying new parts. I always take the carbs apart and try a 2 day soak in Sea Foam or MMO with running a fine wire through the passages followed by compressed air and a re-use of the gaskets and diaphragms first. I almost always get lucky that way unless the diaphragms are really old and brittle. Soaking the diaphragms in 2 stroke oil softens them, too. I'm such a cheap Mo-Fo. LOL.

I have the same model and on mine I had to pry a good bit to get that plastic part for the air filter off. With mine I can get it to start but I have to hold the throttle and can't take it off choke. When I got it from my Aunt the filter was all dry and crumbly. I can only guess that a piece of the filter is stuck in the carburetor somewhere.

Sometimes replacing the carb is the best thing to do. Empty the tank and check if the fuel filter came off. See if the fuel line is rotted and broke off. Replace the diaphragm. It includes the pump. Look at the name, Zama etc. and the carburetor number to find which kit to use. Wildthing 18" chainsaws have identical carbs. but the top cover is different. It's a Walbro. Measure the I.D. and O.D. of the fuel fitting to find the right hose.

Also, suggest you invest in a pair of tweezers - not only will that help you manipulate the small parts but it will help your viewers see what you're doing because your fingers won't be in the way. I might do that too, I got one that had crumbly filter and will not stay running. I can only imagine a crumb of the filter is in one of those passages. You know those thin nylon things they use at the store to attach tags to clothing? I am thinking that one of those with an end cut off would be a good poking and cleaning tool for a carburetor like these. If all else fails they are cheap online as you mentioned. The way I see it you don't have much to lose trying to repair one of them because they are cheap enough to buy new if all else fails. I never liked 2 stroke engines anyhow. I would always get that stubborn one that was not drained before storage. That is probably the single reason I have horrible luck with them.

I had a similar problem, the engine would run until the fuel pumped into the carb, (when I first started the engine) ran out. 1st: I would recommend that you check to make sure that your gaskets are on correctly. For the Metering side, gasket first, then diaphragm, then cover. On the Pump side; diaphragm first, then gasket, then cover. Next I would check your fuel lines, mine was pinched where there was a bend in the line. I added a slightly longer fuel line, that took care of the problem. Good luck.

For a machine that will not start or cuts out after a few minutes, first check that the fuel pipes have not perished and split allowing air to be sucked in. E10 Petrol/Gas that has bioethanol content will destroy some plastic fuel pipes. I have just diagnosed & repaired this problem with a Titan multi-strimmer.

Starting at 924 you can compare the old gasket and diaphragm and can see that he installed the diaphragm under the gasket at 943 and that is the opposite of what you should actually do. The gasket goes against the carburetor body and the diaphragm goes on top of gasket. It is very important to get this right or it will not run properly. Other than that, good video.

hi, thanks for your helpful video. I have the exact same homelite, but have a different but related issue. my unit starts fine, but won't stay lit. in the full choke position, it dies when the primed fuel is spent. if the choke lever is moved to the half position, the motor dies when you pull the trigger. it won't idle in this position either. same is true in the run position. however, and here's the kicker: if you move the choke lever about half way between the full and half position, the motor runs. problem is that due to motor vibration it won't stay there. any ideas as to what this very vexing problem is? I have cleaned and taken the carb apart more times than I care to remember. I want to try adjusting the mixture screws, called homelite but they say the epa won't allow them to give any info that impacts emissions. there is a red and a white housing that prevents you from messing with the settings. which is for the idle and which is for the run mixture? I assume that turning them clockwise will lean them out. is that right? any help you or any of your viewers can provide would be greatly appreciated

"helping some Ryobi carb issues " with my supportive comment. if you have done ALL and even repeated yourself... small possibility IF... you had running/ starting issues... and needing to full choke to run... that the small module used to actuate the throttle is leaking air profusely... fouling all starting and running. I had issues arise after 7-8 years of lite happy use... but i noticed that the machine started harder and harder and needed the choke set more fully on to run. I use premium.. no ethanol. the bulb breaks down and i replace it and can never start it after that. I assumed I had a small rubber piece go in the carb.. so i cleaned the carb. NO LUCK. I moved on and ordered a carb. I put the new hoses/ filter and carb on and made an error... I kept my throttle actuator (turns out it was leaking so much air, it would NOT run. I switched back and forth between the new and old carb assuming i dont understand... When i thought... why keep the old Throttle module.... I switched it out to the new ILL-Fitting cable connector... and poof... like magic.. It ran. a tiny carb adjustment and I am back in business.. I hope this helps somebody.. GREAT VID

It should start with just one or two pull start : provide you clean the carb right, gaskets not torn or broken, gas mixture is right, filter not puck, fuel line not broken, return line in right length, last not no lease form filter is clean..... then you should have no problems with ONE pull start, no matter three of mine were over ten, three or one year old.

Dean Hudson you can pull of the plastic limiter caps and there should be a slotted screw driver fitting underneath all though it is not legal, who is going to check something like that

Just putting a new carb kit in isnt going to be enough.IF you cant dial in the adjustment screws its a total waste of time (1/2 a turn in ether direction isn't going to work) . Go Buy a new carb. they only cost 20.00 or more if you order on line its way less hassle and the new one will all ready be dialed in for the unit .

You have to be really careful. Some of the tiny holes in a 2 cycle carburetor are check valves. They have a very tiny rubber disk in them. Carburetor cleaner and high pressure air will ruin them.

wcjcnc Yes, and you can destroy the carb blowing into them. The one way check valve in the priming bulb base is a good example. You can no longer get then eather. Then its whole carb replacement time. Wire will also destroy that valve. Its best to use an ultrasonic cleaner on them.

on the primer bulb side yes but if you put the gasket between the diaphragm and the cover on the needle valve side, it won't work, too much space between the needle valve an diaphragm, made that mistake myself, learned the hard way, been Workin on them for about 35+ years now!!

  • @rustynuckles3662

Apparently the primer base that the bulb sits on is defective. Mine is a white plastic type that has a check valve that will not release to allow fuel back into the primer bulb. I tried to use a welders tip cleaner to release the stuck check ball but ended up knocking the ball off the spring ( I guess) because now the bulb will fill up and spit back out through the same fitting which is supposed to be the return fitting. Unfortunately I cannot find just the primer base as they have been discontinued ! So in short we're fucked into buying a new carburetor since there is not a superseded number to replace the disposable white primer bases !

Rusty Nuckles 99% of the time the lever on the metering diaphragm is out of adjustment. It's set too low and won't allow fuel in.. 1% of the time its the primer. I'm sure that you have remedied the problem by now but if someone else reads this I hope it helps. My channel also addresses this issue.

  • @scottfirman

    @scottfirman

Rusty Nuckles Yup. I noticed too you cannot get just the white base. If the one way check valve goes bad, that carb is now garbage. I have three weed eaters with bad one way check valves. I am going to try my ultra sonic cleaner on them. If that doesnt work, looks like a new carb. Try a chinese knock off if possible, cheaper but they work.
