I live in Huntsville and used to work at a grocery store that was in a homeless area. It gave me a lot of great opportunities to help. My store had a bench out front and I would go there for my breaks. I recall walking out there one night to find a homeless man as usual and I asked how his day had been. As soon as I asked he started to cry and said “it’s just been a rough day.” We talked for a while and all he asked for was a 50 cent bag of chips. I came back with a sub sandwich, his chips, a bottle of water, and $5 for his next meal or two. We both shared some tears and laughter. He was a wonderful person. Please share some love and remember that, for some people, “it’s just been a rough day.”

@Eyeswideopen 333 very well said. I knew some homeless people that didn't drink or do drugs. They were just going through hard times. Some people are so judgmental and don't know shit.They think every homeless person is a drug addict or alcoholic. Shame on them!!!!

I cried in tears watching this video. I was homeless once for months and decided to join the Army because I don't have anywhere to go. After the military, I got out went to school got my Master Degree in I.T. I am now working as a contractor here in Qatar. Being homeless made me strong and became persistence in life. Thanks for sharing this wonderful video.

The guy that stopped to see these two guys and yes offered them pot lol is my nephew. He has the best heart!!! He has been there and knows the hurt and pain. I love him and we are glad hes back!!!

Make Tiny Housing community’s with permanent housing! On site gardening area toilet area showing are cooking area! Plus sleeping out of the cold, locking your own door feeling more safe!

i was homeless for a while in 07. sister sherry and her church saved my life by asking me to help move and to build thier new church. Just doing that helped me to remember that i had skill and talent and i got myself back together. this is a great video. thank you.

This is a fantastic video. I used to drive 42 miles to work down us 19 I saw so many homeless. My work mate and I started giving out little care packages. It was just something little to try to help.

Not trying to be disrespectful but at 5:00 I couldn't help but smile when I saw the walking man. Growing up we would always see him, whether in south huntsville or north. He walked up and down, always holding his pants up (though he usually had a belt) never asking anything from anyone, even when he was sitting outside the Walmart. My parents have talked to him before and apparently he is really nice

I learned his story a few years ago and it was truly heartbreaking. His brother gave him hard drugs when he was a boy, and it gave him brain damage. May not be the same guy, but there is one guy in South Huntsville with that backstory. He lived with his parents and just liked to walk. Regardless if it’s the same person, the guy you pointed out would come into CiCi’s pizza at least once a week. He never spoke, but was polite and would never bother anyone.

I will try to be more generous, thoughtful and just plain kind to others around me. Thank-you for reminding me to do so. 🙂🙂🙂

I've lived in Huntsville for 35 years. I have been all over this country and I wouldn't live anywhere else. I love my Alabama.

I'm a truck driver and have seen the homeless camps coast to coast. We are a country in crisis!! Most homeless aren't treated this nice. I'm retired living in my RV, classified as homeless.

No they are not. I know because my oldest was a homeless person over a year the last time. It's bad, they are treated worse than dirt, beaten. Put in jail for the only purpose of not having $10. exactly on them when stopped by the cops. I live in the town this is being made. It is not how it really is. How bad it is.

Don't you love the looks people give you that either refuse to open their eyes, or those that blindly believe everything government & media say. Bet when government tells people they are not doing something, you bet your bippy that is exactly what they are doing. When government wants to either distract the people from specific issues, or trying to get more Constitutional rights taken away how these mass shootings began. It is really a sad thought, some are so extreme pushing their agenda they are willing to do pure evil acts killing innocent people. From the 60's on just my lifetime being able to remember certain things, acts have been committed in to achieve their end goal.

I don't even remember the last time I commented on a KZread video. this documentary had me in tears. with myself being homeless at multiple points in my life, I can empathize here. I hope this video reaches the masses and has enough effect on people like it did to me. Small gestures of kindness go a long way in this harsh world. seems the majority of the population especially online lean towards hate and negativity instead of kindness and love. everyone making small gestures of kindess would unite and strengthen our communities, our country, and this world as a whole.

mellima There was a thread on Reddit asking former homeless people what they needed most. I remember one of the best answers was comfortable clean socks! Reddit is usually horrible but that page was useful. I don't remember the link, but your could probably ask someone or look for it. I recall it was linked to a lot.

Been there. Not a drinker or drugs. Circumstances happen. I don't judge. I will buy you food give coat off my back and done that. You standing outside gas station liquor store no way. I will direct you to the Downtown Rescue mission. They do not turn anyone away

As someone born & raised in Huntsville Alabama (still living there too) this doesn't surprise me at all 😊 Anytime someone speaks poorly of my home I know it's because they have never been there!!! Huntsville is a wonderful place to live & raise a family, it's our little secret that no one wants to share so things here will stay the same & not be corrupted!!! I've watched my city change plenty over the years but the people are still solid good down to earth folks that care & respect one another for the most part!!! Very proud of my home, Sweet Home Alabama.... ROLL TIDE ROLL 🐘🏈

Huntsville is on the better end of open tolerance towards different types of people and lifestyles, but it has some darker elements that are not always displayed in the open. Even in Huntsville, there are still many bigots and a great deal of people who turn a blind eye to the homeless. It typically tends to get worse elsewhere in the South. I would never support someone who thought that it would be justified to collectively judge people for the wrongdoings of others, but those wrongdoings still happen nevertheless.

I had Chakri as a professor. One of the last things he said at the end of the class "No matter what you do in life, just always remember to be a good person first."

I like how generous women tend to be. We are mothers and caregivers by nature.

Back in the 1980s, I spent almost the entire decade living in Huntsville, Alabama. I attended Grissom High School and began college at UAH. Huntsville already had a homeless population, but it was largely hidden. There were some that I would stop and have conversations with, share my food, etc., but I was lucky. I had a roof over my head. When I moved away from Huntsville beginning of 1988 for Charlotte, I wouldn't experience homelessness firsthand until seven years later. The next sixteen years were never easy and never an adventure. I almost froze to death on countless occasions, had guns drawn on me by both police and civilians, shot at by civilians, thrown off a moving vehicle, had bikes and general possessions stolen... yet, I was given shelter and clothed when the elements wore me down to nothing, given the time of day when I didn't know what day it was, gifted with hot meals and the occasional twenty dollar bill from a kind stranger when no one else paid attention to me... and Starbucks, that homeless oasis by default. People need studio apartments. Rents need to be restricted to 30% of income, and should include heat, water, sewage, pest control, trash, and billing fee. Not an extra fee on top of a drafty apartment. High rents and utilities are making us homeless also.

Manna house is awesome and Fran is one of gods angels! I volunteered there for about a year before I had to quit and take care of husband with 4th stage cancer once he passes. I'll be back there. This clip made me miss the manna house.

Live Free or Die My heart is deeply deeply touched by the plight of the homeless- no matter what the circumstances . It’s just wrong. What I don’t care about are “homeless enactments” . If you want to know what it means or how it feels to be homeless just ask a homeless person- many are willing to talk about it to anyone who will listen. It won’t be anything nice or fuzzy and warm. It stinks to be homeless. I don’t care about “good” people who are so comfortable they can take off work and pretend to be homeless. Sorry no tears. You want to shed some tears or know what it is really like to be homeless visit Invisible People. Heartbreaking.

wow...this documentary shows the worst of the human condition and the best of human experience...I think I cried a few times...sad that people struggle like this and so very thankful that today I am watching from a warm home and I am not hungry...thanks guys for this sad but hopeful look at homelessness...god bless you.

Truly a touching documentary that brought tears to my eyes. Good job guys.

I found this video last year when we were considering moving to Huntsville, and it pretty much swayed my decision to move here. I couldn’t believe the people of this city actually had such love and compassion. Now that I’ve lived here for almost a year and seen it for myself, this documentary is a great representation of the entire “aura” of this city. I visit that starbucks very often, the customers and employees are always being kind to the homeless people.

Humbling video. Im from the UK but lived in Kansas and Colorado springs for several years, the homeless in Colorado is brutal but i always give what i could.. These people in Huntsville are something special thats for sure 🙏🙏🙏 humbled me

I live currently in jacksons gap alabama with my best friend and my soulmate carla and we have a few pets a mccaw and a cat..I really need help and I dont know how to or where to go for help..My soulmate gets ssi and ssa from the social security and in total she gets around $700 a month and I cant work or even walk because I was a semi truck driver and hit a 3000 pound bull and rolled the semi 6 times end over end. I had to be bay flighted to the hospital. And due to all the damage to my body and im only getting sicker and my health is getting worse. I applied for disabilities but I have been turned down 2 times..so now I have an attorney that filed an appeal. But idk if carla and myself can make it until then. I have worked all my life and paid taxes and paid into social security and medicaid., I dont have any money or insurance and cant get any help at all. Because I dont have any young children living with me I dont qualify for any medical help from the state or any other kind of help. Im lossing so much waight due to my health problems and I have been to at least 13 hospitals and even an Islamic free clinic and because I dont have moneys and or health insurance the hospitals dont help me to get better., I get blood work and uran work and vitals and then im giving a stack of papers of specialist that "can" help me with my health and sickness but as soon as I walk out the hospitals exit doors then im my own problem again..I have begged the er doctors to please help me and that I feel that im dieing. But they say that the help I need that they cant do the procedures in the hospital/hospitals. I live in constant pain and its getting worse every day. I have thought about suicide many times as of late but I just cant leave carla here all alone on this planet cause im all hes got and shes all that I have. We dont use any drugs and or anything else illegal. Carlas check isnt enough to pay our bills now that im not able to work. Is there any homeless tent citys near me that you know of? If so please let me know. I cant be homeless on the streets when I am bed bound and cant walk as well as we have a bird and a cat. If you can help me with any useful info we would appreciate it so much. To whome it may concern..thank you

Having been homeless for several years, I cried ridiculously, all the memories, all the familiar faces, (some of them are no longer with us, but RIP my friends).

This documentary brought tears to my eyes. While I was in college I found myself homeless. I lived in and around campus for two years until I graduated. Was the saddest time of my life but it also made me the man I am today. A very humbling experience that I almost didn’t survive.

I was homeless in Huntsville Alabama for 3 months. I'm not from there and it was difficult.

Wow, at first I was thinking, if I am ever homeless, I know where I want to go. But then I realized, damn, I just want to move to Hunstville because it is such a beautiful loving community! What an amazing place.

I live in Madison/Huntsville area, and I've traveled to other US cities and I grew up a bit abroad. I can personally attest that of everywhere I've been and everything I've seen, that some of the kindest most generous and down to earth human beings can be found in this one city in Northern Alabama. With everything going on in the media and with all the false/negative information, narratives and opinions being spread about my state, it makes me so happy to know this video exists. To have this displayed here on KZread for the rest of the world to see. Thank you two for creating this video and doing what you did. This perfectly captured the true nature and morality of the people of Madison Country Alabama.

I love Huntsville so much. I've been visiting now three years in a row from CT. My boys attend space camp there for a week the past three summers. During their stay, I get to explore the area and meet the wonderful and warm people who call Huntsville their home. Just got back this weekend, and I miss it already.

So many good people in Huntsville. I live in southern California and haven't seen this here. I was at a burger kings in Tustin ca and I saw this older women with a younger child just sitting there trying to keep warm with no food just hanging around so i approached them and ask if they were hungry their reply was yes so I went back to my car and pulled $20.00 out came back and told them buy some food so u can hang out for some time longer.

I can tell you from living in Huntsville if you want help it is there. Either through the Manna house, Rose of Sharon or the homeless shelter. Most choose to stay in one of the camps below the interstate and just wait till people bring them food. A lot of the people come through the manna house just to get free stuff. I love raising awareness but it should cover every aspect. Talk about the ones that choose to stay on drugs and what we will be doing for their mental health. Handouts help no one. Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.

This has truly had me in tears the hole time I was sobbing like a baby, I Know first hand how hard it is being homeless, I know this because Me, my 3 yr old son & my husband have been homeless for a little over 3, yrs now ( well liveing in a motel for the past 3 yrs,) and my husband works every single day & Was I a Sargent in the United States Marine Corps , and we can't even find anyone here to help us get back on our feet like these people where offering to do!!. I really have to admit when you fall down this low in life it's exhausting as ever trying to fight to make your way out,. It seams like everytime you might think that you just might be able to almost touch the top again something else surely comes along and knocks you right back down (I HATE THAT FEELING!!!!)... "NOBODY DESERVE'S TO FEEL THAT WAY". I can't wait until The day finally come's when we can walk though our own front door again & say we're home or be g able to take my child in our own back yard to play or being able to jump into a vehicle to run to the store because walking with a little one is pretty tough sometimes it's cold outside. It Will happen we just have to believe 😇 This video has really, really, gave me alot to be even more thankful for, it might not be much to anyone else but to me what little bit I have is everything to me. God bless you all..

When the Starbucks manager came out to offer them food to take with them I teared up! From my experience on the streets years ago, this hits home. I wish people in Hawaii were that loving and generous towards our homeless people. God was moving in that town!! God bless all those people!!!

I was homeless. And yes GOD helped me through my jurny. Now me and my girlfriend are doing well and now living in a rv and rv park. We have only 21 dollars two our names. Spent $20.00 at Walmart. We are Blessed and tears or running down my face but we will make it. GOD willing we will make it.

Documentaries like this make me realize i need to be doing more to help the homeless. I am fortunate to have a lot and take it all for granted.

I live here in Huntsville Alabama and I have most of my life and it's nice to see the help is there for those that need it. Thanks for doing this and letting everyone know there's a big heart in Dixie

Have to add, my family and I are from Huntsville. I went to UAH and had Chakri as a professor. My last two years of college were rough, because I have a schizophrenic brother who was on drugs and would wander the streets in the city. He kept running from the drug rehab center near UAH, and we would have to go pick him up and drop him back off at the homeless shelter part of The Mission. (They have to stay so many hours/ nights there before they can be admitted to the program). He left and went into psychosis, and was lying on the sidewalk of University, laughing and giggling to himself. A police officer came and got him, and unlike an officer from another city might have done, chose to take him to the hospital instead of to jail. That officer saved my brother’s life as far as I am concerned. Once he was admitted, the State held him and got him straightened out mostly. Homelessness and mental illness definitely do go hand-in-hand.

I'm a woman. I have schizophrenia too. I'm 56 now . Have lived with a mental illness since I was 21. Was homeless on and off from October 2017 until December 2018. I'm in a beautiful , brand new complex that has 30 furnished apts set aside for the mentally ill. Have been here since December 2018. Glad to know that officer helped your brother. I'm in Upstate NY, by the way.

Best video documentary I've seen all year!!!! Really hits hard in the "feels".

Anyone can help the homeless by giving to Downtown Rescue Mission, taking them canned food, toilet items and don’t forget the women and children, women need monthly products for that time of the month. You can volunteer at the Mission. There are many ways to help. I did hand out gallon bags with many necessary items but always included a New Testament with $5 in it and just handed them out as I saw the homeless, but I took the program that was offered by Huntsville to educate the seniors i believe it is Senior Crime Prevention and that is a wonderful program to educate us, the officer told me I should not be handing out these bags because if a person did not like what’s was in the bag they could react violently and hurt me. I was heart broken but there are many programs in Huntsville to help the homeless. This is a great video thanks.

Wooow awsome I was homeless I stayed in a women shelter and the love I was shown and the glory of God in Christ name it my own family wouldn't help me and I sacrificed alot for my family money wise and when I was in the cold not one helped me my mom was the only one who was worrying sick and I said mom I don't want you to fix what I was going threw and my journey was long and painful I wasn't prideful so many amazing women helped me and I just got my section 8 and I just moved into my one bedroom apt and glory glory glory to God 🙌🙏😇 and soon I have PTSD and soon as I move in people like family try to show up to live with me I said no cause where were you when I needed help people don't want nothing to do with you if your homeless but when I got my place so many tryed showing up on my door step 😒 I been threw hell I fault the devil and I fault hard and my faith in Christ I'm so happy that people care cause God knew what he was doing with me u us im grateful that people still care and I hope God watches over all of them God bless you all

25:20 If they were in a bigger city, those backpacks would be gone in a heartbeat! They're very lucky to have done this experiment in such a good town...the way they were treated and the help they got so easily isn't the norm at all.

I live in Huntsville. They deffinatly made sure to sleep in better areas. For instance, they never ventured into our tent city or go into the downtown area. They actually only stayed on one road for the majority of the film. I noticed every homeless assistance center was on Govenors Drive.. the city is much much larger then what was shown. The road they were on is mostly residential and the closest they got to the big city part was in the library area and they didn't stay the night there , which was probably smart. I think they would have had a higher chance of their bags being stolen if they had stayed in that area.

@@lucalascola university and governors can be a little sketchy. But it's not as bad as tent city or north Huntsville. Huntsville is also like the safest city in Alabama lol. Birmingham, mobile, Tuscaloosa, all sketchy lol. My dad is homeless and an addict and I know he hangs out around the hospital sometimes too.. but he doesn't go to Starbucks

@@lucalascola Did you watch the entire film? I too live in Huntsville. They visited areas around HWY 72 (some rough areas from what I could tell), East and West Governors, areas off of 255, North Parkway, East Bob Wallace and the edge of 5 points near I-565. They walked over 15KM per day. They did not just stay on one stretch of road.

Huntsville is a low crime area. You are correct anywhere else and those backpacks will mark you for trouble. I live in Huntsville and even though this is a safe place to live it still isn't how they are showing it. A couple of guys with good jobs can't spend just a few days outside posing as homeless people and get any kind of an idea what homelessness is like because they know that in a few days they will go back home to people that love them. They still have a sense of security. I have been on the streets and this film is a joke in my opinion.

Always except when people offer that is your gift to them.

my doctor taught me that as I was humbled from much to little...I told him it made me feel less than when people gave to me, and he told me..when God blesses you , you received it, he is trying to bless the other person...I now accept with an open heart knowing that the one blessing me is about to be blessed!!

@v ttd I obtain the excess of Walgreens weekly . . . and feed the homeless of McPherson Square, just a few blocks from the White House . . . home of the 'leader, of the free world.'

Wonderful and powerful story. I grew up in Huntsville during the Mercury-Apollo days. This video makes me so proud to be from this city. Restores your faith in humanity. Thanks for posting your experiences.

it was good to see them giving out dates,they give you energy and are filling!!And of course healthy and easy to take with you!

I was run over by a drunk driver as a boy, the resulting epilepsy left me homeless, my friends disappeared. I was run off a place I slept at in an old truck. I have only seen the horror of this world, I know nothing else.

Water Melon hey I hope things have improved for you. Epilepsy is hard and not given the seriousness it very much deserves, my 14 year old son passed away due to a seizure. All the very best to you, I wish I was close to you so I could help you

I am so sorry that happened to you.. I suffer with PTSD due to trauma. I would be homeless if I hadn't fought to stay in this place that I bought almost 20 years ago for a few thousand dollars. I thank God for his help alone to give me the strength to try to keep this place after lossing my 2 jobs. I have helped several homeless people over the years. I would probably help you to if you asked even tho I have been burned by some of those that I helped. My heart overrides my head. It's a God thing. I do understand what you're saying. But please try to be thankful.. Thankful for the person that did help you during the time that they did when they allowed you to park on their property. The universe loves gratitude. Peace and blessings unto you. ❤💜❤💜🙏🏾 I don't have much, but I do what I can.

As a veteran living in the Huntsville area, I’m so appreciative of our homeless services in this area. There is so much need, as with any larger city. If everyone could help, even one day out of the year, imagine how much more we could do to serve our people.🙏🏼❤️

When I get back on my feet, I will help the homeless more. I’m sorry I did not do more knowing I was homeless as a child but cane prosperous, until covid hit and lost my job. God is awakening many of us so we can experience poverty in order to be strong for those who cannot.

could you imagine if this town was like all towns, cities and countries around the world? Sacrifice and Love is the corner stone of Salvation! What a wonderful moment that would be✔ Many need to be picked back up - not judged for their fall!

You were very fortunate. I have been homeless for 25+ years. I have been beaten by police while I was sleeping. I've been arrested falsely to fill a new jail Tucson built. I have been surrounded by police, guns out, yelling freeze! so many times I forget. Rode the rails for 30 years. Rode a mountain bike with panniers 20,000 miles across the US. I have ment four serial killers that I know of. I have been hunted with dogs and guns several times. There are towns where the police run you off. There are towns where they hunt and kill you. I'm a vet too. I'm currently rubber tramping. I was young when I realized I didn't want to participate society for certain reasons. No regrets. You were very fortunate.

Khari Owens You are probably the 500th person to tell me that. It​ would be unbelievable to most and scarely cathartic to me. I am 60 now and camped by out as I speak. The world is such a catch 22 when you participate in a system bound for destruction.

Do you think more should be done to help veterans re-adjust to society or is the problem that people are majority cruel and don't care. I've talked to another veteran who seems to have police harassing him.

some towns are so much different, a lot depends on region, up north people seem to be more uptight but when they help they help bigtime the south-west is plain brutal, the south-east has grown callous of homelessness and now with recent disasters needs our countrys help,the north west is so poor they cant help themselfs and the closer you get to nyc the less human you become

In Huntsville we do not have a large homeless population. It's much much smaller compared to other cities in Alabama such as Birmingham and Montgomery. Huntsville is also surrounded by Owens Cross Roads in Madison Alabama which are more expensive housing. Due to these factors I think that's why, from what I've noticed, we treat our homeless a lot better than I've noticed and others states around the country. Not to talk down to anybody else's state. It's just from what I've noticed when I've traveled. Almost there almost sticking to word it completely in other states like they don't exist. It makes me very sad to see.

I don't live 30 miles from Huntsville Alabama. There's a lot of ppl needing help! See a lot of it!! God bless them

This community is beautiful this had me crying the care and love and respect they show homeless people I wish all were just like this city. I am greatful for all I have in my life I never take any of it for granted i am greatful for the roof over my head and bed I sleep in. When I come across a homeless person I usually give food and some coins I would never judge a homeless person all I know I would wish truly the best for them.

This makes me so proud of my home. Love you Huntsville ❤️

Glad this popped up on my recommended list. Born and raised in Huntsville, Alabama. Great to see all of the good that goes on here. It's a great place to live. Ive always loved living here. No reason to be anywhere else. Great job on this!!

I spent 23 years out. After aging out of grouphomes I did my very best to do my worst. I am glad your expereance was so possitive. CA is a bit harsh, but people can't help themselves. Hearts have grown cold. The powers that be work very hard to keep us from lovin on each other. But there are still good souls out there. Thanks for lookin at it from a different purspective. Happy to see you guys had such a generous support from community, but this is not the case for most homeless people ,people don't even look at them if anything their look down upon. There's guys out there sitting outside and nobody offers them a quarter, but I hope people see this could be me if anything was to go wrong in my life Health mental addiction, people with addiction problems a lot of people won't offer help and so sad because what brought these people to addiction what scarred a person so bad they turn to addiction? Before judging and not knowing, I wish people would take the time to try to understand the problems and if you are fortunate enough to help a dollar makes a difference. I hate to see someone hungry and cold and being sick from addiction especially seeing someone going through withdrawal you know they're having a bad time and they're sick, anybody that's been sick nose if they take a medication to make them better they're going to do it that's the same with people with drug addiction they start to go into withdrawal they need that drug it's not a want it's a need or they're physically sick I know no one should have picked up the drug in the first place but this is life and it happens, I know if I can make a difference I will and I try to no one is better than the next person we all have feelings some more than others the world cruel enough so I'm not going to make it any harder on someone that's having to hard time.

Tony Quartermain My son is addicted to heroin and is steeling and lying his way , to being homeless . I try to help him from time to time and end up being sad about the fact he is using our help to get high . We have no gods to turn to and sometimes I wish i could return to a belief in these sky daddies . I just can’t fool myself with magic imaginary helpers . We must rely on each other , if help is going to be forthcoming . Do kind things , not for a place in the next life , but for this one .

Going around saying these programs that exist don't exist and saying you were in social services, as if that makes you an expert on the subject? I've seen you in the comments and have not seen you propose one positive idea.

God bless America. as an immigrant I know that I am very lucky to end up in the beautiful Huntsville AL I have work my way up from the first time I Stan on American soil don't even have something to eat to now owning a house in this great country .. thank you American people you are the ones that makes this place the greatest place on the planet is not the government or politics is people is you reading this you have the power to make everything better or worse for someone else. I do thank everyone that has helping me out and. I thank everyone that is kind no matter who you are or who you help ...... sorry for my English still on the learning process 👍
