Exactly, Homelander thought of him as a loyal dog, keyword being dog. a bad owner can kick them around and abuse them and still expect the dog to think the world of them because in a lot of sad cases they do, because that person is all the dog knows. But in this case, A-Train found other people and realized that other packs needed him. Remember Homelander thinks of a very select group of people as being on his level.

You know the irony and kind of poetic justice of this? In the first episode Atrain said that sage was the smartest person in the world but wasn’t smart enough to know when to keep her mouth shut but her keeping her mouth shut is what saved his life…

They were both extremely arrogant and egotistical. Furthermore, Death Note is not 'smart' smart it's 'dumb' smart. The characters there superhumanly intelligent. L has the combined intelligence of 3 full FBI labs combined. He stopped WW3 when he was 8. Light is more realistic, but even then he acts stupid. Like when he failed to control his emotions during the Lind. L. Tailor incident, or how he spared his girlfriend (I cannot remember her name right now for the life of me) despite her hindering his plans more than helping. Even after Rem died Light still kept her around, partially leading to his downfall. Then there's his underestimation of N. His entire handling of the Third Kira situation is a disaster. He failed to take into account the stupidity of his own followers, leading directly to his death. Even in death Light stupidly believed he could still win. Sister Sage is more realistic than them. She didn't stop WW3 before hitting puberty. She isn't a super genuis. She is a genuis. Her ability to manipulate others, get inside their head, and her foresight are admirable qualities. Moreso than Light's blind arrogance and overconfidence. I haven't watched AOT, but from what I heard Eren isn't exactly the brightest bulb in the shed. In fact no one there is especially intelligent, or clever. The series is driven by plot contrivance after plot contrivance. But that's only what I heard so I could be wrong. My point is that there are numerous forms of intellect. It also equally as many forms of stupidity. Humans are not machines. We are all unique to some extent and individualistic. Just because Sage doesn't fit your definition of 'smart' doesn't maker her stupid. It does, however, give away your core values and what you define as intelligent. I'm not judging, just stating a fact.

I think that's the point. the writers of this show have severe TDS and have a twisted caricature view of conservatism. Course most people knew that in the beginning, but it wasn't as bad as it is this season and was willing to be overlooked. I mean, I'd argue that she isn't the dumb person. Emotionally/socially dumb, maybe, but she definitely saw the bigger picture and anticipated what would happen as per her plan. The problem though, was Homelander. Him with all his narcissism and ego, he couldn't just leave it all to Sage and wanted to take action as quick as possible. His actions are driven by emotion, not reason, unlike Sage. Sage was obviously the more intelligent person, but against Homelander she just couldn't do anything.

She knows Homelander's instability and insecurities would never make him a feasible leader for the empire she wants long-term. She probably wants to manipulate Homelander into acting out by making him think everyone around him is incompetent, that way he can replaced by a more competent representative for the supes. Wouldn't be surprised if she's either working with Neuman or trying to pit the Deep against Homelander to destabilize the Seven.

He at least tried to be a good-ish father, he sort of has an idea of how to be a good friend, he is just so used to people abusing him that he doesn't think it's abnormal for him to use his own powers to torture people.

Nah, Stormfront was basically sister sage and Maeve and firecracker combined. She was manipulating him with her own agenda (which is what sister sage was probably doing) and also playing to his need for love and affection (which is what firecracker is doing) and he was also physically attracted to her (like he was to Maeve). You cannot compare firecracker to Stormfront because she is only one of these and Stormfront was all 3. Stormfront managed to exert some form of control over Homelander whereas the relationship between Firecracker and Homelander is completely one sided.

I’m amazed that Homelander actually had the restraint to not kill Sage right then and there. I was fully expecting him to just laser her.

I think their portrayal of his narcissistic attitude towards a-train is spot on. For so long he treated a-train like shit and when he finally finds out he was betrayed he is devastated like it wasn’t bound to happen.

Homelander uses fear to control everyone around him and turns around and thinks they love him - fantastic writing of a narcissist. 10/10
