Excellent info….thanks! Old geezer here…first time in the studio 1974 Island Basing St. Jess Roden album. They had just moved to 24 track tape! Now l have a home set up, x6 and twin. Neve, API and 1176 hardware. Good mics. My process is analog in Digital out. Works for me. UA is superb. I usually use outside mixers and mastering. Just had John Gallen mix a track. He was happy with the recorded sounds and his mix is great. Anyway…thanks for your great video. And keep on Rockin' !! Steve 'Guitarman’ Webb

Ive just invested in the X16 to go with my Twin and satellite. Im selling the 32S the clarity of the audio is great, ive not even tried recording live drums yet with the pre amps and my WA and Neve. Cheers for the vid.
UAD is indeed great, I have a Twin into a satellite quad into an x8p, but it was a nightmare to configure it all, I would love to see a tutorial on the setup and linking it to DAW for future reference, although I’ve got it all set up now, I am sure others will also struggle, particularly with adding and routing outboard
Very nice, I have the Apollo Twin Quad and I'm happy with it although I could do with some more channels in Console.
So, all I need is a GoFundme page and I'm in! lol

As much as you are the top #uafanboy on youtube, I am gonna admit.. If I was setting up a full recording studio I would 100% go down the UAD unison route. No hardware though, id just invest in the DSP and use luna for all the tracking. No need for gear if you've got that amount of real time processing power but... Your also a #gearsnob as well.. So I get why you incorporate the 500 series as well 😜

Just wondering which lunch boxes you are using for the 500 series pieces? Awesome video!
Hi Ed, enjoying your content, plus the stuff you do with Paul on PLAP. Keep up the great work! On Apollos, I am a big fan generally, running 3 Apollo devices. They do a lot very well but expansion, as you rightly say, is fairly pricey. One thing worth highlighting is the limited ADAT i/o with even the X series only offering 8 x 48Khz ins/out (4 at 96Khz). This doesn't compare favourably with most other ADAT compatible interfaces, such as Presonus' Quantum range, which commonly offer 16 x 48Khz ins/outs and is a rare area where UA's specs are beaten by others that cost a fraction of a rackmount Apollo. However, UA Apollos do have excellent dynamic range, the whole Unison and plugin DSP concept and offer a very high quality user experience over all. Great video! Best wishes.
@EdThorne

Thanks, Adam. There may be other devices that offer more ADAT I/O per device, that’s true. My set up offers me 24 in and 16 out via ADAT alone so I have plenty to expand with. Plus the X6 analog I/O I’m not even utilising yet. Plenty more analog gear to buy 🤣
listening to this made homeless thank you Ed 💛

Given that UAD Apollos are daisy chained using a thunderbolt 3 cable, how do some studios manage to have the Apollo twin on their desk and another rack mount unit on their rack? The maximum length of cable for a TB3 cable is 2 meters and the distance between the studio desk and rack is usually much longer than that. Are there any TB3 cables that are longer than 2 meters and actually work? Or are these studios using a different type of connection? 🤔
I still don't understand how to connect outboard gear to the apollo twin without the daisy chain, could you make a video speaking on this subject?
@EdThorne

What do you mean by Daisy Chain? ADAT in is straight forward. Analog in requires going into the Preamps (preferably via Line-In with the gain set to minimum (10dB) to minimise preamp influence).
Bro cool cool 😎
Well, i wonder, i have apollo 8 mk2 quad and if i buy apollo x4, will it be an upgrade for me ? Which one has better ad/da connectors ? İs there any differences about sound quality while recording vocals ? Do i need to buy x4 ? Or apollo 8mk2 quad is still better ?
@EdThorne

I believe the X series has upgraded converters but you’d be very hard pushed to hear a difference. You have a very good set up with what you’ve got. Maybe try and external preamp/compressor combination, or different Unison preamps/channel strips. The API Vision sounds great!

Thanks. I have one planned in and amongst a load of 500 series content. Probably starting in the new year.
At around 9:20 I notice your Apollo being directly below the euro rack unit. I’ve heard it was recommended to leave 1 unit of space above the Apollo but I don’t have space like that. Therefore, I was wondering if it’s fine to just not leave space above it just as you’ve been? I was going to put a patchbay above the rack being that it doesn’t have significant depth so that maybe the airflow will be better. Do you think this is a good solution?
@EdThorne

The depth of my Wes Audio 500 racks is shallower than the Apollos leaving plenty of space for the Apollos to cool down. It’s been fine.
I want to know the pros and cons of running +25 instead of +20 in the UA universe. Does it make the drawn waveforms smaller and the tendency to overload as have visually smaller drawn waveforms?
@EdThorne

Are you referring to the +20/+24dB headroom setting in Console? It gives you more headroom on the analog I/O of the interface.
@138productions
10 ай бұрын
Thank you for chiming back in. I was running the apollo twinx,, then added the x6. With the option to run at +20 or +24. I am a bit confused on where the headroom advantage comes to play. Is it on the input side, (allowing me to drive hotter inputs with my external mic pres running through the uad emulation inserts or is it on the output gain of my mixes before they hit "0". My first encounter with this I found I was distorting at the DAW, even though the drawn waveforms, (which I formerly watched like a hawk) where distorting but only filling about 2/3rds of their potential "draw space". It felt like I was distorting much earlier in the gain staging that I did when I ran at +20. It doesn't make sense to my ears. Any clarity would be much appreciated, but now I'll keep watching the input gain on my pre's instead of the drawn waveforms in my DAW.@@EdThorne
Wow that is really impressive. If I were a Mac user I seriously would have gone the UAD route. I wish they supported PCs more seamlessly. You're right their ecosystem is not for the faint of heart nor light of pockets lololol. Definitely find them on the used market for sure. Right now I'm running the RME Ucx ii and RME octamic. Outboard wise I have the UAD MK610, BAE 500c, DBX 560a, BAE 1073, SSL Pre VHD in a Neve Lunchbox. I'm still building out my gear, but yours is really nice. Thanks for sharing this.

I did not realize what I was NOT hearing until then as it was extremely revelatory. Originally I had a presonus 18/18 svl or something like that. The headroom on the RME is very generous as well. The software of Total Mix definitely takes some time to wrap your head around, but overall almost zero latency on my system. hi and thanks for this video. I would like to ask you one thing: I have an Apollo Solo and I need more dsp. So do you need the additional DSP for Unison pres and monitor inserts? If so, you need a device with more on-board DSP, such as the Twin X, as you've mentioned. I'd suggest getting the quad model (4 DSP cores). The Satellite DSP can only be used for mixing purposes.

@EdThorne
Жыл бұрын
Wes Audio chassis to the Flock Audio via D-Sub25, then Flock to X8p also via D-Sub25 cables.
Yeah... Ditch UA and Apollo and go buy an RME Fireface UFX+. You get a WAY better driver (UA drivers are cumbersome and very non-intuitive), almost endless routing without fiddling like UAD, with MADI connections and a channel count up to 96 INs in one interface. (You'll rarely ever need that high of a channel count in a studio session. You won't be recording full on orchestras with choirs if you're thinking about one of these interfaces). The "DSP" in UA interfaces is not as awesome as they want you to believe. For example, You get an apollo Twin with the idea that "it has DSP". Load just a couple plugins and you're out. Similar with the higher-tier Apollo interfaces. The only serious way to get UAD plugins running is to get a UAD Satellite (ka-ching). And, let's talk the elephant in the room... Luna... Why would you? Just go get any of the other DAWs available. You'll be more flexible being able to work with something that you can find outside of your own studio.
Remember u can’t use the satellite cores for tracking tho

@@livewarp My comment was referring to the on-board Apollo DSP which powers the Unison and monitor insert processing. This happens on the Apollo not on your computer, remember.
