The interesting thing about this song is that they performed it in the original key the CAM did it in. They are soooo versatile. Tim was actually first trained as a tenor as his voice dropped rather late - and man did it drop! In fact he recommends bass singers to develop their upper range instead of focusing just on the low notes, before trying to reach down. He has a 5 octave range to work with. Chance is the baritone usually but he too easily covers bass when Tim is otherwise occupied. You want another surprise? You should check out Tim's solo project Will you still love me /Stay. All vocals are sung by him and he uses nearly all his range in that one!

I think training lower male voices as tenors or baritones is more common than it should be. I got to college and was taught first as a tenor, then baritone, and by senior year my voice had continued to lower. I wound up maintaining a lot of my upper register, and falsetto control. But my lower range has continued to extend down as I’ve gotten older. I went from F2-G2 at 18, to G1 by 25, and now in my early 30s B0-Bb0. I wish I had learned more bass specific techniques while in university studying music, instead of mostly tenor or baritone things. Like subharmanics or chest-fry. But it makes sense since I couldn’t physically access the lowest parts of my range as it had yet to develop. I could benefit from finding bass specific training now that my voice has more or less settled at ridiculously low.

@@Adam1984_ oh I left that out. In my learning other techniques past college like subs helped me reach lower. B0 is my lowest fry. I can sub A0-E1. Have gone below the piano just barely with subs a few times but not consistent. F0 is about as high as I can hit of a sub but inconsistent. Chest fry is a lot louder in the lower range for me. I think my lowest “Modal note” is between B1 or C#2 depending on hydration, how rested I am, time of day, etc. I’ve been blending the shifts between those to smooth out my range so I forget to specify sometimes. I was pretty tired in my initial post and left out some of that. Sorry for any confusion. Thanks for pointing that out.

This song is one of my favorites. We usually ask reactors to wait to react to this song till they are familiar with the individual members. Then they are surprised at hearing the switch ups in the voices. Tim who is known for his bass can sing in a beautiful higher tenor voice along with Austin & Rob. And Chance can hit the lower bass notes when needed. Adam did a fabulous job as always with his vocal percussion. The original song is sung by a woman Cam, so they sung it in a higher key to match the original range.

Great reaction, and very funny. Confusion is the only natural reaction to this bewildering display of expertise in unexpected ways. Tim started his singing life as a tenor but to his surprise the voice suddenly dropped. He does work on it, and always says that the way to strengthen and extend your lower range, you have to strengthen the upper range to support it. Chance also has a very wide range, often singing with the tenors as part of a higher 'bank' of sound. You can hear that in "Helplessly hoping" - if you haven't heard it yet, put it at the top of the list. It's a remarkable arrangement. You didn't mention Adam's superlative (isn't it always) contribution, which links sections beautifully. Admittedly, his vocal technique is beyond description for mere mortals. The guys seem to like you. Wonder who they'll send next ...

The best description of Tim’s experience, training, and method of developing bass singers is in his interview with Elizabeth on The Charismatic Voice. He explains why it is important for bass singers to work hard on their falsettos and high ranges before he works with them on their voice as bass singers. He tells them to listen and sing with The Beach Boys awhile until they are more comfortable and then return to him for more instruction. Elizabeth has made comment on Tim’s work with Peter Hollens, and how both of them are able to remove the depth of their lower range when they sing tenor, and then return lower in the same song. As said by others, Chance add to the group to replace Chris Rupp (2016?) gave Home Free more flexibility allowing both of Tim and Chance to switch to tenor and baritone lead knowing there would be a competent and experienced bass to add substance with Adam Rupp who can really go low as an instrumental singer.

I think having Chance in the group has opened up so many possibilities in relation to both his & Tim's vocal ranges. His creativity complements theirs in arrangements, voices, harmonies & then the actual artistry of the videos. He also has an amazing voice. This was more stunning as a demonstration of range before there were so many other selections showing off the ranges of Tim and Chance, It still carries some punch, but if you have heard Snow Globe, American Pie, Bothers at Arms, etc., you know Tim and Chance have remarkable tenors (and there are several that show the tenors can do at least baritone as needed). With all that, this song becomes more remarkable for the swells, crescendos/decrescendos, and the total awesome beatboxing, the percussion being so sharp and busy (but appropriate) that it is virtually indistinguishable from a physical drum kit.

Can we all just take a moment... after hearing the insane vocal abilities of those singing.... and truly appreciate what Adam brings to the group. There aren't many ways he can't manipulate his voice and mouth to create mostly impossible sounds as a vocal percussionist....

I think it went like this "Okay, we really need three tenors to fill the top of this cover. So, Tim you take the first round and chance you take the basement to let us build off of you. Okay, no problem says everyone." The only surprise is that the five of them found each other from all over the country. They are all excellent at their craft.

And here is one more point about this song to blow your mind. When they make their videos, they do sing to a recorded track, perhaps not full volume but they do sing. So keep that in mind. Now notice how you hear claps and stomps. They stomp but do not clap. So did they clap in studio and miss it in the video? Possible but with these guys, it is unlikely. Pay attention to Adam Rupp. He gestures his vocalization in their videos, partly to show that he is doing something but also he just can't help it. He gestures as he makes sounds. Watch him closely. He is gesturing at the moments we hear a clap...👀 So my brain is thinking that he was 1. gesturing to cover up that they weren't clapping to justify the sound or 2. he was replicating the sound of the claps somehow. After watching them for a while, I doubt it is the first. No need to have Adam makeup something to justify the clap sound when they could just clap IF that is just a clap. I honestly believe that Adam is reproducing the clap like sound himself. And if you watch a live version, the clap sounds are there but subtly with no one clapping. That one blew my mind when I realized what he was doing!🤯

the group has fun with the fact that Tim has no vocal boundaries it would seem.. I know that Live they laugh about it with performances like "You're Man" because he's bass lead for most of the song and then all the sudden breaks into High Tenor and keep pushing his range up until Austin and Rob are like "hey.. hey.. get back in your basement cause that's not cool dude.. that's supposed to be our area of expertise you are belting into"

This video shows why I say that HOME FREE is one of the best A Cappella groups around. And now, the best people can say is Watch earlier songs by Home Free and then watch MAYDAY. Because the longer people wait, they may hear his higher notes and that will ruin the surprise. And Chance was the BASS for his previous Group, Street Corner Symphony. So he is VERY capable to handle BASS when they (they group) need or want. The looks on your face was PERFECT. Thats the kind of reaction people want to see. But the longer time goes on, the harder it may be to see that type of reaction. Great Post, Jennifer. And thank you for sharing this with us. (And KUDOS on the Video from Tim. Woo-Hoo!!!)😃

I see why most "Home Fries" wanted you to listen to a good number of Home Free songs before listening to Mayday. They wanted you to establish their normal vocal patterns in your head so that the shock effect would be there for this song when some of the roles were switched. Great reaction Jennifer! Your videos always leave me in a good mood. 😊 P.S. So Jennifer, you don't think if you really channeled your inner Tim and sang first thing in the morning (morning voice) that you could hit those Tim low notes? 😁

Chance to their fan base... deliberately so, so that the Home Fries would accept him as a great assistance to Timmy in the lower registers, and would free him up for a greater variety of leads. *(This from a guy whose only note he can sing consistently is a flat one and **_I don't mean G#1_** )*

and interesting enough, this is one of the vids where Tim Faust starts in his higher notes, we're so used to Tim being the bass. It's hard not to react to Mayday once one of the Home Free members requests you do so, but as most Home Fries say, you need to listen to some of their older stuff to really appreciate the effort and the tricks they do with 'May Day. You might try listening to the original by Cam to hear how they switched it up. Great reaction by you, I love the way you break it apart to explain what is going on ... perhaps teh next step is you sending in a demo tape to Home Free?
